Having seen Yes play at least six times in the past three years, these comments are way off base. Live they continue to sound awesome. True, Benoit David is not the equal of Jon Anderson, but he's pretty damned close. The sound quality here isn't great. In person Yes continues to sound absolutely amazing.
Benoit's voice and all of them are so bad here. HORRIBLE!! His voice is worse than the clowns on american Idol. This is the ultimate insult. They have prostituted this music to a fault. They sound and play like crap. I don't know how they tolerate this effort. After the 6/30/79 YES show I saw, people said they are the best ever. They were right!! That show was mind boggling. No one is walking out of this nightmare, saying they're the best ever. These are imposters trying to play YES music!
This is a joke. Steve is a workaholic. Should stick with Asia for the future. This is an insult to Jon and Rick. Yes is now like the shirt Bruford used to wear in the early years that said "NO".
Too bad. When it's over it's over, and that's when Rabin, Downes, etc. and the other twenty members of Yes came and went. How dare some "Canadian Idol" be allowed to participate in Yes. Jon and Rick (even Moraz and Vangelis) deserve accolades. FUCK MY OLE' HERO'S!
I think the playing sounds fine. Is a bit slow. David sounds like he has a cold, which happens. Not impressed with Geoff. they should had kept Oliver in the band.
@DaddyDrummer007 I don't particularly like that they tossed Oliver to the wayside, but after seeing Yes with both Oliver and Geoff, there's no doubt who had superior stage presence. It wasn't Oliver. But yeah, this video... Ouch. Benoit's not sounding good these days either, so this really hasn't been his year. You can hear some guy in the audience almost brace himself @ 06:21...
They are either doing this on purpose, don't care anymore, or they just can't do it. They use to make the impossible look easy. Not anymore! Total embarrassment!

Really guys? This is a joke and I hope you're proud you've finally driven the YES legacy into the ground with this "stellar" performance. Geoff Downes is a hack and this singer doesn't deserve to be on that stage... go back to Canada.
Since 1997 YES has been less than stellar! Lousy sound systems, Musicianship that is 90% less than 1971 -1979. After 6/30/79, the last In The Round Tormato Show, people were in shock for the rest of their lives. After the 2002 show people were saying no big deal! I went to see them in 2002 with people who never saw them, telling them they are the best ever. After the show they say no way are they the best ever. I just tell them that they are 25 -30 years too late in seeing them.
YES, 1971 -1979 - Massive volume and power. Musicianship and stage setup beyond comprehension. This fake YES is an embarrassment to the legacy of YES.
Also, Jon must be seeing this and chuckling a bit - perhaps he's glad he's not still a part of Spinal Tap? I'll just keep listening to Yessongs and Close to the Edge when I want to hear the greatest ever lineups of Yes - f*ck Geoff Downes.
I wanted to see them one more time, as I saw them in Grand Rapids MI this March...but as soon as I heard they'd gotten rid of Wakeman (Oliver, of course, but a Wakeman nonetheless) and replaced him with Geoff Video-killed-the-radiostar Downes I instantly retracted my idea of purchasing a ticket and driving from Ontario to Michigan again. Sad, sad, sad - it's enough that they replaced Jon, but getting rid of Oliver is stupid. They should find a young drummer if anything, Alan is tired...
An extreme culmination of the reason I stopped going to see them in the 90s. I want to remember what once was - PERIOD. I'm sure that now that I have seen this, I'll see more of it - but this is the absolute worst. I'm sorry - it REALLY is. It actually reminds me of that tour they did with that PATHETIC "singer" from Buggles. Is this Geoff Downes? He was actually OK on that tour - no Rick Wakeman, but OK. He's sloppy as all hell here.
I'm so glad Jon Anderson wasn't on stage for this disaster. These guys are jokes now..I've seen the 13 year olds from the School of Rock perform this song more precisely and with more energy than this line up of clowns. They can put together a new live album from this tour and call it Yessucks

Okey 26 dislikes is terrible for a Yes video! I'm a huge rush fan and I like them better than yes, but they are noe comparible. Yes is much more complex prog. Rush is more heavy rock. If you don't like yes, don't listen to them. But don't say they are bad because of the genre they play!
This is one trainwreck after another. I've tried time after time to like Yes; since their contribution to popular progressive music WAS considerable, but I think this is the final nail in the coffin that proves Rush is a FAR more talented band, especially live. Incidentally, I saw Rush in Glasgow this year, and it was the best show I've been to; and I've seen McCartney and Zeppelin to benchmark it against.

I personally think this lineup isn't good enough to stand up to the test of time, but I suppose we'll see...
From 1997 to 2011 we got to see YES play some of the best setlists ever. Unfortunately with below average to horrible musicianship, sound system, stage set up for them. Still it was a miracle to see! From 1997 to 2011 i've seen Yes 29 times. All those shows combined are still 1,000,000 light years below the show I saw 6/30/79. Plus with the show in the 1980'a i've seen YES band 49 times. Yes has gone from a Rolls Royce, supersonic mindboggling spectacle to a jalopy!
Oy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanted to crack a joke or two but this is a train wreck of mamouth proportions. The only thing I could thing of is maybe geoff's monitor was out? If not, this is an embarassing end to a pheonominal group light years ahead of it's time.
I saw them play at the Greek Theatre Tuesday, the 2nd of Sept. Yeah, A little flat at times but at others, quite musically talented. The keyboards could have been a little louder, but I enjoyed the music for the most part. The vocalists voice was fine and didn't exhibit the attributes in this video. I saw them with Styx and thought the music should have been cranked up a bit louder.
Geoff Downs can say what he wants about the fans or Jon. The bottem line is at this point with or without Jon they play and sound like crap! Steve Howe's face during this disaster is worth the price of admission. It's like they know they suck now, but as long as a few thousand fools show up, it's ok for them to ruin what use to be the greatest ever.
As they said in Awaken. SHALL WE NOW BID FAREWELL, FAREWELL. I don't think they can get much worse than this. But never challange worse, if you do worse will get you!
The sharp, distance parts are painfull to listen to. Just awful musicianship! Hard to believe how bad this is. If they played like this in the 1970's, they would have been laughed off the stage!
I saw a cover band in 1995 called Forgotten Yesterdays. They were better than this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Howe, Squire, White, Downs, David JUST DON'T CARE IF THEY EMBARRASS THEMSELVES. It's amazing they were able to get through this without stopping in the middle and giving up!
Alan White tries to increase the tempo, but it just doesn't work because Howe and Squire are totally flat. Geoff is using a baking track (you can see it in the beginning) and the notes he plays in the middle sections...well...he'd be better using a backing track for those too (Howe, after a few killer looks 7.25 8,25, at 8:45 is led out of tempo because of Downes acceleration, and finally is then about to vomit on him at 9:00)...they killed this song and Geoff buried it. Ah and Benoit.....who?
Believe it or not, Geoff is the only Yes keyboardist with a music degree! I'm 17 and I taught myself to play keyboards & I can play it almost perfectly, after being familiar with this song for less than 2 years.
Thanks for posting this. It's absolutely putrid! And it validates my previous decision to avoid even casual contact with this apalling, grotesque parody of a once-great live act. I have been fortunate to see the real Yes several dozen times from 1975 onward, including some memorable gigs in recent years with Anderson & Wakeman (Massey Hall and Air Canada Centre in Toronto in the mid 2000s). How these guys can justify charging admission for such unpalatable sewage is beyond me. Disgusting.
I have only Just purchased my tickets to see them in December in Stockholm. After seeing this I am thinking, is it worth the airfare and hotel. I saw Beniot once already and he was not good. I am not one for thinking that the line up always has to be the classic Yes, or they should play CTTE forever. However, if they replace Jon, then it must be with another great singer. Beniot is not right
@evilmonkey90125 I'm going to see their concert in November in Nijmegen. Got ticket already. Beniot sings out of tune mostly and is losing his voice in the middle. Downes made a blunder and his playing is below a certain level....I think they shouldn't play this Yesmusic but focus on their latest work. Fly From Here is really good!!! Let's hope they manage to do so on their Autum Tour in Europe...Chris told in a recent interview that they'll do so...I'm curious.
I can't watch this. I saw a photo of Steve Howe on Facebook mentioning this - his jaw dropping at Downes blunder. My GOD what happened to these guys? The level of musicianship is SUB-PAR in BOTH vocals and keyboards; 2 vital elements of Yesmusic.
Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman are justified in their scathing comments of this band.
Ouch, ouch, ouch. Why is Parpy Downes in Yes? This performance sounds like a bloody rehearsal. I feel bad for Alan, Steve and Fish. Steve rarely shows any negative emotion on stage, he must have been so embarassed after this one. Hopefully he gave Parpy a swift kick in the ass after. Ouch, ouch, ouch.
That was a train wreck at the end. I think Benoit David is a decent singer, but this track is simply beyond his natural range. And did Geoff Downes rehearse at all before this tour? Doesn't sound like it.
I suspect that Benoit's voice is starting to crack from having to sing at the upper end of his register every night (listen to the new Fly From Here material -- his natural range is notably lower than Jon's). But just as bad are the flubbed cues and the dragging tempos. Put a fork in 'em. Sad to see my favorite band go out this way.
NO, but Yes cannot, cannot go like this on stage .... did they get totally crazy ? They seem to be come back to 1980 when Trevor Horn would suffer every night when singing the highest Anderson's notes, but Benoit David sounds even worse .. I can't understand...and I am one of the few true fans of Drama and of that peculiar line-up...
Are you kidding? This is the "replacement" singer? Choosing this guy over Jon Anderson? Jon's twice this guys age, and could sing the songs twice as good!
A bit painful. Benoit can't help his obvious chest congestion...he really caught a crab at the end there, but Howe's expression at 09:01 re Downes is another story. I'm glad they didn't play this the next night in CT b/c it might have broken my heart. Think Benoit might have said, 'Sorry about that...a bit congested tonight or something.' Benoit did sound better the next night, but I'm glad they dropped it from the set. Not the easiest to sing...odd they'd go for it but they did again 7/9/11.
Whoa! I've been seeing scathing reviews of this tour, and they weren't exaggerating. Even Steve Howe has a look on his face from 8:53 to 9:05 that says, "what's going on?" His jaw literally drops at 9:04. If Geoff spent as much time learning this song as he does blasting the fans on his blog, things might sound better.
Wow. With a tribute band singer in Yes (obviously out of his depth ), I never would have thought it would be possible that there woule be another musician vying for the "Art Garfunkel Luckiest Man On Stage Award". Geoff, you should have been at the gates personally handing cash back to the fans after this show.
Good God. Worse than I thought. Geoff Downes has no feel for the material and Benoit David seems to approach this classic song as if he were doing a Broadway musical version. It's sad that Yes has chosen to continue this way. Thankfully, it's not the way I'll remember them. Still, it breaks my heart to see this.
well, he's no jon, but i've seen benoit with yes a couple times now. this is obviously a tough nite for him. imho, he's on about 70% of the time. he's got some big freakin' shoes to fill...jon anderson is and always was the voice of yes. that's why they got benoit...cuz on his good days he sounds alot like jon. but the keyboard guy seems to be screwing stuff up the most. i realize they tend to jam alot live nowadays...sometimes it works...sometimes...ya get this.
If one wanted to view Geoff Downes' blogs go to yesfans.com and look them up. They explain much. As for trainwreck.....Can't disagree. Practice..practice!!!!! (before performance guys....cough-cough) I was once given a Kansas song to play and was not prepared for it, heard it twice(??) but didn't homework it so-to-speak...Trainwreck Du-Jour!!! I was soooo embarrassed!!! Life lesson. This has all the ear marks of not-ready-for-live perusal..sorry to say. And yes..Benoit was very ill

If not, this is an embarassing end to a pheonominal group light years ahead of it's time.
stevedrums 7 months ago

The problem is that people show up to see this disaster! Theirs is a disgrace!
yesshows100 7 months ago
As they said in Awaken. SHALL WE NOW BID FAREWELL, FAREWELL. I don't think they can get much worse than this. But never challange worse, if you do worse will get you!
yesshows100 7 months ago
The sharp, distance parts are painfull to listen to. Just awful musicianship! Hard to believe how bad this is. If they played like this in the 1970's, they would have been laughed off the stage!
yesshows100 7 months ago
I saw a cover band in 1995 called Forgotten Yesterdays. They were better than this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Howe, Squire, White, Downs, David JUST DON'T CARE IF THEY EMBARRASS THEMSELVES. It's amazing they were able to get through this without stopping in the middle and giving up!

uh, I forgot to say "FUCK YOU ALL for ruining one of my favourite Yes songs." was the first thing I shouted when the video ended!

Sorry, that's not Jon Anderson is it, and he lost his voice at the end. Given their age , I guess its amazing their still performing
davidmbutcher14 7 months ago
Anderson, on the other hand, still manages to look about 16

Chris Squire looks like a walrus. Hope he manages to lose a bit of weight!

Beniot is not right
evilmonkey90125 7 months ago
@evilmonkey90125 I'm going to see their concert in November in Nijmegen. Got ticket already. Beniot sings out of tune mostly and is losing his voice in the middle. Downes made a blunder and his playing is below a certain level....I think they shouldn't play this Yesmusic but focus on their latest work. Fly From Here is really good!!! Let's hope they manage to do so on their Autum Tour in Europe...Chris told in a recent interview that they'll do so...I'm curious.
MrPengelen 7 months ago
I can't watch this. I saw a photo of Steve Howe on Facebook mentioning this - his jaw dropping at Downes blunder. My GOD what happened to these guys? The level of musicianship is SUB-PAR in BOTH vocals and keyboards; 2 vital elements of Yesmusic.
Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman are justified in their scathing comments of this band.

See that EXIT sign in the background? Might be time to use it, guys.

Benoit obviously has a bad cold...you know what they say...the show must go on! :)
derbystardom 7 months ago
That was a train wreck at the end. I think Benoit David is a decent singer, but this track is simply beyond his natural range. And did Geoff Downes rehearse at all before this tour? Doesn't sound like it.
hwyfan 7 months ago
This is sad.
TrevRockOne 7 months ago
I think Geoff Downes should stick to "Video Killed The Radio Star" and leave the real complex stuff to Rick Wakeman.

@H3WMW - Indeed. How Parpy got back in Yes is beyond me.

I have to hand it to Howe and White. They both keep it together very well. But the rest of the band (even Chris!) is completely off.

Even if Benoit's voice wasn't in good shape, at least he knew what song they were playing, something that didn't seem to be the case with Downes.
Howe's reaction was priceless. :-D

that was hilarious.

I suspect that Benoit's voice is starting to crack from having to sing at the upper end of his register every night (listen to the new Fly From Here material -- his natural range is notably lower than Jon's). But just as bad are the flubbed cues and the dragging tempos. Put a fork in 'em. Sad to see my favorite band go out this way.
shammadamma 7 months ago
is that Chris Squire or my grandmother?
marcojp94 7 months ago
NO, but Yes cannot, cannot go like this on stage .... did they get totally crazy ? They seem to be come back to 1980 when Trevor Horn would suffer every night when singing the highest Anderson's notes, but Benoit David sounds even worse .. I can't understand...and I am one of the few true fans of Drama and of that peculiar line-up...
LeadSint 8 months ago
Are you kidding? This is the "replacement" singer? Choosing this guy over Jon Anderson? Jon's twice this guys age, and could sing the songs twice as good!
perpetualjoe 8 months ago
A bit painful. Benoit can't help his obvious chest congestion...he really caught a crab at the end there, but Howe's expression at 09:01 re Downes is another story. I'm glad they didn't play this the next night in CT b/c it might have broken my heart. Think Benoit might have said, 'Sorry about that...a bit congested tonight or something.' Benoit did sound better the next night, but I'm glad they dropped it from the set. Not the easiest to sing...odd they'd go for it but they did again 7/9/11.
Grendelmonster8u 8 months ago
That was bad.

It's readily apparent to me that Beniot is sick and physically having problems with his voice... and you know what Yes does to ailing vocalists!

@quagga88 Not a lot of loyalty in this band, is there???LOL
stevedrums 7 months ago
Wow. With a tribute band singer in Yes (obviously out of his depth ), I never would have thought it would be possible that there woule be another musician vying for the "Art Garfunkel Luckiest Man On Stage Award". Geoff, you should have been at the gates personally handing cash back to the fans after this show.
sonickhatru 8 months ago 2
