I seen him in the mid 70's...(in San Francisco, Winterland, I was young. I gained new respect for freeform style of Harp playing. Had gone to see Lee Oscar and War. I was blown away by War and Oscar because of Acoustics's...Sound Crew had them WAY TOO loud to be enjoyable...For me, I had been a Mayall Bluesbreakers fan for a long time.. Mayall took the show !
If as @ClearValleyFrost says the band is playing in D-flat then the harp player should be playing in A-flat (I think). If you want to be able to play along with the music you need this harp. If you just want to play this on your own any harp should do. There is at least one tutorial on youtube to learn this brilliant track. The one I have seen uses a harp in C (i think). Good luck.
@daviemcf - is that how blues harp should always work? by playing a harp that is five half-steps above the key that the song is in? i.e., an F harp for a song in the key of C, or a D harp for a song in the key of A?
I was ten when this one was released. It was one of my first records. And it still creeps up inside my skin like a poisonous snake, givin' me goose bumps. Awesome man!!!!! Chicka chicka what... What a great time that was. Were gettin' old, chicka.
very easy: this cd should buy anyone who loves acoustic blues performed by such stunnung artists. any song is a wonder for itself performed by these 4 men.
Saw The Turning Point tour in Philly in early 70's. Foghat opened. They were VERY loud, and VERY good! Then Mayall came on and just mellowed the entire Spectrum out. Fantastic show! One of the best I've ever seen...
I saw him in Tampa in 1969.... front row center. Great show, no BS, no "testing, testing, testing". He came out, started jamming with his crew and blew everyone away. We knew who he was, we expected good but he SO surpassed expectations.
Great! A friend took this album to me in Lisbon in 69. I was at that time 17 y.o. album is lost now... don't remember the last long track with amazing drum play. But keep Mayall in my heart TXS
he is amazing and he is playing Aug 12 at Patriots Place and I cant find anyone to go with alright he is old as dirt but I bet he still has it Jams Montgomery is playing too ok im dating myself who cares Its music and it does the body good!!!!
One of the greatest live musical perfomances I ever witnessed when John tore this up at Penns Landing in Philly in the mid-70's(free concert), then saw Magic Dick blow me away with Whammer Jammer a couple weeks later at JFK stadium. I was in Lickin Stick Heaven!
great memories of this song back about 15 yrs ago. My then 5 yr old son would tap his foot & play air harmonica and he could do the "chica" stint verbatim. It was so awesome to see such a young kid get so into it. He still loves teh blues and when he gets home from Iraq hopefully he will get back to playing.
saw him in waikiki in 1969 when he opened for blood sweat and tears........nobody really knew who he was....everyone came to see blood sweat and tears because they were the new, hot act in the country. john mayall blew everyone away with this song... no drummer. he got a standing ovation at the end. his performance and his stellar sidemen just kept growing and growing on everyone......he just blew the roof off the honolulu convention center. b,s,& t were a letdown after his incredible set.

@ClearValleyFrost The song is played in the key of Db ...so it should be a Gb harmonica...(playin cross harp) blues style mainly sucking.
