Even if you haven't played in a while guitar strings shouldn't do that. My guess is that the slots in your nut are way too shallow... causing you to have to press down hard in order to fret a note.

You need to get a GOOD setup on your guitar so the strings are closer to the fretboard, especially the string height at the nut. Then if you still get sore fingers, maybe you're playing too long, after a few hours you HAVE to take a break. You can try ligter gaufge strings, like maybe .050 - .011, and try plastic coated ELIXIRs. They are kind of expensive but may help you somewhat.

use super glue, put it on the tips of your fingers and let it dry, itll harden up and you can play on the strings and it wont hurt your fingers, youll feel the pressure on your finger tips but it wont hurt, i used to do that when i was playing gigs EVERYNIGHT, it does hurt sometimes, and my bass player followed my lead and he said i was a genius so i thought id pass it along
