  • This song reminds me of my Irish Heritage.

  • This song needs to be much, MUCH longer.

  • My bonnie lies over the ocean...

  • what a creepy pic

  • Sting <3<3<3<3

  • 3 of my Stewart Jacobite ancestors survived Culloden and were sent into identured serventhood in the colonies, I love this song.

  • It is a song in support of the last christian king against the London sludge that went on to rule and damage the world.

  • Fantastic !!!

  • XD its a love song to a guy. Sé mo laoch mo Ghile Mear

    ‘Sé mo Chaesar, Gile Mear,

Suan ná séan ní bhfuaireas féin

Ó chuaigh i gcéin mo Ghile Mear.

He's my champion my Gallant Darling,

he's my Caesar, a Gallant Darling,

I've found neither rest nor fortune

since my Gallant Darling went far away.

n I think his pronunciations a bit off.

  • @DianahEirinn It's not exactly a love song; it's actually in honor of "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (Charles Edward Stuart), the Scottish grandson of King James II of England. Charles tried to take over the throne in the Jacobite uprising of 1745, but was defeated in the Battle of Culloden and had to flee for his life. This is one of several songs written in his honor.

  • @VictoriaBlogger ooo cool I learned something :) thank you

  • @DianahEirinn You're quite welcome! :-)

  • Chivlary is not dead to those who still keep it at heart~

  • It's sung in Gaelic.

  • Um....yeah....I know this may sound like a stupid question, but this is in Irish right? 8O I've never heard Irish before. >.< This is nice....This is a good band. 8D Any other artists like this?

  • @Byakuyalovelornsoul Yes this is Irish

  • @Byakuyalovelornsoul

Try Gaelic Storm, although I don't think they're as good.

  • Now I'm really thirsty for a tall pint of Guinness

  • F'n Irish poets and their g'dam emotions.

  • Alba agus Erin Gu Brath!!!!!!

  • I'm not being pedantic, but there's an 'I' in CHIEFTAINS. Excellent duet.

  • Guys, Guys, GUYS!!!! STFU!

Lord have mercy on you. You bicker back and forth like hens' in the yard!

pls read your history and quit with the babbling dribble.

Some people just have no decent sense of morals.

  • A beautiful song - powerful..

  • Still love this version. Great sound with Sting. I wanna stand up and salute.

  • Sting may not have had a clue what he was saying, but this song is amazing <3

  • @SleepToDie Sting can actually speak in Scots and Irish Gallic

  • @ScotsLyon he couldn't when he did this first. Sang it phonetically. As he said in an interview.

  • SPECSAVERS ADVERT!!

  • Absoloutly love The Cheiftain's! I was in Matt Molloy's just the other week having s pint of Guiness with my Mum :')

  • Welsh like the English? :-D I think some Welsh would beg to differ. My forebears were from Ireland and Scotland, but I grew up in an American town that was founded by Welsh--not "Western English"--immigrants.

  • @ohevshalomel great. if you studied the history of the british isles you would know that the last time the welsh fought for freedom against the english was nearly 600 years ago. tell your forebearers that you clown

  • Comment removed

  • @Legionairius807 Usually the sort of boorish ethnocentricity that you have so eloquently displayed comes from Irish-Americans who think they're native-born, but a first-generation Irishman can achieve that too, as you've clearly demonstrated.

  • @ohevshalomel hahaha have to laugh. I must had hit a nerve with what i said because you took the time to reply not once but twice to the same comment then delete the first one because it made you look stupid. but in reply to this comment which makes you look less stupid you can say what you like but i am a proud Irishman. i was just pointing out historical facts. if you don't like that then you really do need to read a history book. Owain Glyndwr died in 1416!

  • This was the song at my grandad's funeral, with a bodhran player leading him out. I've never experienced anything so haunting yet so beautiful

  • 10 ppl suck!!!!!

  • Just came across this as my daughter is learning it on her harp. Haunting, riveting! Sting makes me want to learn Gaelic asap!!

  • Go mhaith!

  • I hear this as a cork man born and I have no idea what is being said. I hold a level of disgust in myself for not knowing these words, my tongue has been raped and my soul stolen, give me my birthright to sing wing my soil!!

  • Maith go leor

  • this is origionally a poem written by a poet called Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill fom Charleville, Co. Cork.

  • Well done to the musicians. Beautiful and powerful rendition. It says it all, and eloquently.

  • Love the way all the comments are in English hehhehehe

  • @UKProtector we are speaking in english only due to the arrogance and violance your country brought to my lands. for hundreds of years you persecuted any person practicing catholicism and for speaking "as gaeilge". "is mise an gaeilgoir maithe agus ta tu homogneasach". your stupidity on youtube is allowing me to illustrate my points perfectly. you are and always will be an ignorant english yob.

  • @Boobsmcgroin Oh, well said!!! Our languages were prohibited by the english, so it's no wonder we are forced to communicate in English now, although thank God there is a big revival of the gaeilge (Gaelic and Brythonic languages suppressed by the English)

  • @sitithesecond u hypocrite for going on about "suppression" while writing in english

  • @Hawkflame What language would you like me to write in? Malay? I will do that if it gives you pleasure. Meanwhile please read the comment by Boobsmcgroin above very carefully.

  • @sitithesecond sorry

  • @Boobsmcgroin more than 600 years, surely? It goes back to at least Edward I (known as the Hammer of the Scots so no doubt he did not neglect Ireland). However to be fair Elizabeth II herself is not personally responsible for the crimes against humanity committed against the Irish. The British government, like the governments of Japan and Germany, must publicly admit crimes against humanity and publicly apologise although of course this will never take away the enormity of these crimes.

  • @sitithesecond no i wasnt suggesting she was personally responsible. but she is the living head of state of the united kingdom, it is therefore her responsibility to address any issue relating to crimes committed by the armed forces and by the RUC during their time in northern Ireland. she also was the head of state during the troubles. she has enough influence over gov to force them to release documents relating to atrocities committed by the brits on our soil but has not. no ethic no morals.

  • SCOTLAND AND IRELAND FOREVER!

  • @MICKYMAVYT Bring back Bonnie prince Charlie

  • Tiocfaidh ar la

God bless Ireland and the I.R.A

  • LOVE being Irish. F"ck the queen and her hairy arse.

  • @Boobsmcgroin wearn't saying that when ya give her the 21 gun salute and played God Save the Queen lol. Just pipe down your begging bowl will be filled : )

  • @UKProtector did i personally invite her or fire the 21gun salute? no. would i ever beg for anything from your from your murdering nation? no. am i speaking in english because my ancestors were allowed the priviledge to do so in their native tongue? no. Liz the head of state of the britain in my eyes is wanted for war crimes against the nation of ireland and her peoples. 600 years of oppression, suppression, rape, murder and starvation will never be extinguished by "her majestys" visit

  • @Boobsmcgroin Weep for eight hundred years.

  • @Boobsmcgroin which Liz?? theres been two....

  • @UKProtector She'll be on a prayer rug with the rest of the English soon enough.

  • Bhi me ag lorg Mo Ghile Mear as Gaeilge

  • I AM PENNAETH HAERN I WILLL NOT BE BROKEN!

  • Legionarius 807, you need to read more about English history, the welsh fought against Edwards rule, but he pushed into wales, building castles to protect his supply lines, advancing all the time.finally they surrendered. The welsh turned the English military into the most powerful in the world at the time, because the welsh gave the English The LONGBOW!!

  • to the video poster, after ''we saw him go'' in the first verse the words are ''an buachaill beo''. just thought i'd let ya know!!

  • I dislike, not the video , I love Sting, but he kills this song. Please leave it to those who can actually sing it as Gaeilge and give it its due

  • @keyeshanlon - Have to disagree. Sting MAKES the song. AND, he makes the song come alive and get to the heart, at least mine :)

  • Quanto tempo dall'ultima volta che l'ho ascoltata, grazie.!!!

  • buichill mo buichill

  • Just like we sing at hame except bettter.

  • this isnt about scotland or the north...its about the stewarts leaving Munster and the gaelic way of life ending...its also about specsavers

  • The Welsh fought, too, just earlier a not as well.

  • I'm American by birth, but my great-grandfather is from Ireland...It's Celtic song like this that make me feel closer to the Emerald Isle ideals then to America's!

  • @wolverinet86r if it hadn;t been for the English your great-grandfather would probably never have left Ireland

  • @Broadsidejohn Jesus Christ, one can't even play a traditional Irish song without you Yanks immediately screeching anti-Islam shit. So what if the whole of Europe is Muslim in 20 years. That's our business, not yours. And it has absolutely nothing to do with Irish music anyway.

  • @sitithesecond Hey, I'm one of those Americans that knows the difference between Muslim and Islam...I'm just one that knows the schism between the sects, I just know the difference!!!

  • @sitithesecond How does the call to prayer sound on traditional Irish instruments anyhow?

  • No es un canto racista, es un canto de amor, lucha y esperanza

    jamás oí algo tan bello

  • ní laobhraim geailge...

  • iontach !!!!!!!!!

  • @ireland201011 you know what, fuck you, you might hate the English, but Scots are classed as Brits too you potato growing fuck, you forget a few hundred years ago where us Scots helped out the Irish, no, cos you're an insensitive prick who only speaks before he chooses what to say.

  • @ianm4n

LMFAO, no timid breed, the Scots, that's why I'm married to one! <3 To ANYONE out there who might wish to make a comment that includes anything with the word Scot or Scottish in it, DON'T DO IT!!! It doesn't take much to piss off a Scotsman.....ooops, laughing too loud, my husband is angry again...

Oh, and since we're supposed to be making comments on the song Sting sang..an Englishman singing with Irishmen, and no one was harmed during the making of this CD-very nice, I liked it!

  • @iriswarrior1 haha, im so glad i could make you laugh :) yer so right though doesnay take much tae piss the scots off, anyways, all the best tae ee

  • To Legionairius807- respect to you. I am a soldier and hold nothing more dear than a soldier's sacrifice and his committment to his brothers and his cause. I have been to Culloden and felt the battle. Agree with every sentiment you write.

Sting is a gifted and passionate musician, a great teaming with the Chieftans. Enjoy the music everyone!

  • I've been trying to find this song for years. I heard it as a small child and didnt remember the name, only the tune and lyrics. it finally ends here. I found it after four years of searching.

  • @MrWaflleStar The same thing happens to me all the time, man. Finding that tune you remember from childhood is one of the greatest feelings!

  • @MrWaflleStar

That happened to me too. My father used to play this song all the time, and all I had was the tune. I finally found it many years later on a CD that was thought to be lost at our house. One of my favorite memories as a child by the fire place on a snowy winter night!

  • @MrWaflleStar Don't feel too bad I played it for years in the childcare center I worked at (the wee bairn's room) I never knew the lyrics till I got them here. Just think a whole crowd of what are now juniors could be future Patriots!:-)

  • @MrWaflleStar should have went to specsavers.

  • iCried

  • This song makes me cry in a good way :')

  • i think sting should wear a hat.

  • respect from ireland for those true scottish patriots who fought and died at culloden! forget religion. northern ireland should be part of the republic and scotland should not be included in 'great britain'. the welsh were and always will be no more than western english. the irish and scots fought and died for their freedom. much respect

  • @Legionairius807 move on and leave the welsh out of it, they have their own history. respect other nations history.. in case you didnt know king arthur is a fairy tale. the world would be a better place if people read more history instead of fairy tales.

  • @pougemahon1 wow are you serious? thanks for informing me i would never have known.

  • @Legionairius807 The Welsh still speak their own language.

  • @Legionairius807 Yes. The gallant Scots fought and bled at Prestonpans, Falkirk (and elsewhere) and lastly, at Culloden Moor. But the Welsh(called that by the Saxons and Angles who invaded after the Romans left). It was they who stood and fought as Celts before being driven westward. They were not English. Why am I, a Yank, giving you a history lesson? Do Ambrosius or Arthur mean anything to you? But not to worry-England will be Islamic within 20 years and you will have nothing to bitch about.

  • @Broadsidejohn yes mate why are u attempting to give me a history lesson? because u as a 'yank' are full of shit. what does ambrosious a roman and arthur a fictional character based on ambrosious have to do with bonnie prince charlie? and as for england being islamic in 20 years? seriously mate your talking shit but as a 'yank' i wouldnt expect anything more.

  • @Legionairius807 Hey, moron! you're the one who accused the Welsh(decendants of the Celts who fought the Saxons and Angles) of being English. In case you have had your head up your ass, because the Brits have brought over many militant Muslims, there is now a shadow Sharia government and court system in place. Some areas of London are now no-go for non-Muslims and the police are OK with that. If you think Arthur was a fairy tale, take it up with historians and Burke's Peerage.

  • @Broadsidejohn 'yikes'! i said the welsh mite aswell be english because they have not fought for an independent wales in the last 500 years and there have been areas of england that are no-goes for non muslims for the last 20 years. really mate ur totally going off the point of the video. canadians? la raza? who cares? what do u know about muslims in england? apart from the anti islamic propaganda the u.s government spews. apologies to anyone reading these comments and thinking 'what the fuck?'

  • @Legionairius807 BTW-the current US(ObamaTheMerciful)overnment is pro-Islamist and anti-Christian. And now NASA says that their chief mission is not space exploration and gathering knowledge, but to make Muslims feel good about themselves. Muslim fanatics are doing nothing good in the world in case you haven't noticed. Maybe you would relish all the Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus and other non-believers beheaded. Until they come for you and your Socialist buds, eh?

  • @Broadsidejohn i must say i have really enjoyed this fantastic arguement but im going to have to end our conversation now because you my friend have totally gone off the point. i must go now to behead some non believers here in ireland. farewell broadjohn

  • Respond to this video..I sure don't know how this video of a beautiful song for Prince Charles Edward Stewart launched an anti-Welsh(Briton), anti-American diatribe by some. Just a great Irish song for a lost cause.

  • @Broadsidejohn LOL.......Sharia Government hahaha.......Carry on watching Fox news moron!

  • @Brucebleo I watch FOX and CNN, the two most popular news channels, and polar opposites at that! I like to get what both sides points of view are. But an observation I have made is (even though he is a "nut") Glenn Beck has hit almost all his predictions spot on. I wasn't happy with the Bush Administration nor am I happy with the Obama Administration, I think the US needs to start over, and with a traditional base of Capitalism and Christianity/Catholicism. None of this Radical Muslim garbage.

  • @LRK29485 Fox AND CNN? Pffft.....that explains it all......I have nothing more to say to you......go drink a bear and watch a game........go do some shopping as nothing is wrong and everything is ok......go back to sleep......

As for Beck LOL.....he is just jumping on the band wagon LONG LONG LONG after many many others have been saying the shit he is repeating.....he is worthless.....

Anyway as I said.......I have nothing to say to you......

  • @Brucebleo I like to get the views of both the Liberal News channel and the Conservative News channel, did I say that I thought all was okay in the world? No. Did I say i was a fan, or agreed with Glenn Beck? No. You're making it seem like I was calling you out when I replied to your post. In no way, shape, or form did I make any remarks that could induce a reply like that. What are your political views King Bruce? Or are you too good to reply back? Oh I forgot, you have nothing to say to me.

  • @LRK29485 You are right I have nothing to say to you......

The fact that you still believe that any mainstream media will give you an unbiased look at any of what is going on in the world is just ludicrous.....

They serve only their corporate interests.....it goes the same for mainstream news in Canada and the UK and in fact most of the western democratic countries.....

So yeah.....what can I say? what do I need to say? reality as we have been taught is a fraud and you suck it up.

  • @Legionairius807 Don't you have an riot to start in some major English city?

  • @knothead15 sorry mate but you are a retard. stop watchin fox news

  • @Legionairius807 There was Scots Irish and English on both sides, as for the Welsh being western English

Owain Glyndwr and Llywelyn ap Guffudd and a few other Welsh might disagree with you on that one.

  • @Legionairius807 The Welsh fought for their freedom too and carried out the last great land invasion of England. Respect to Owen Glendower.

  • @Figserello

Truly was a great day for the Six Nations.

  • @Figserello when??

  • @IsCumaFut2

Owain Glyn Dwr, the rebel King of Wales, invaded England from Wales in 1405. Got as far as Worcester, before having to turn back, but it looked like a serious challenge to the English rule at the time.

Perhaps the Scots launched a full scale invasion after his time? I'm not sure.

  • @Legionairius807 I have learned that the welsh for the most part are as great and honorable a people as us irish or scots. They where overwhelmed along time ago. They have still clung to there native language. While i agree with 99% of your text i must say that even though i have never been i have meet welsh everywhere OZ Canada, USA asia and they are a great bunch. Remember logger is how they refer to england it means lost land. The saxons called them velche or as we now know welsh.

  • @Legionairius807 hey. i've got something to say as a student from eastern europe. i was always wondering why the the english wouldn't let go of northern ireland so they can attach to the republic of ireland. and last week i asked a teacher from Birmingham : WHY IS THAT? and he said: those from Northern ireland don't want to...and i stuck like this :O...so...

  • @numbtesticle the reason why things are the way they are in ireland,is because of ignorance :(

  • @Legionairius807 WHAT? Western English? The Welsh and Cornish are CELTS! Please stop drinking and start researching before you start typing.

  • @Pictish76 - lol!

  • @Pictish76 Check your history. Us Irish are no more Celts than the English, Welsh, Scots, French and even Turks. Keep it under your hat though. If the truth gets out, we're ruined.

  • @hillman39 the Celts never existed no one tribe or group of people ever claim to be Celts the term is in fact a modern term given to multiple tribes spanning from eastern Europe to France and also England ,wales,Scotland and Ireland. but the Romans conquered Europe and England driving this culture to the fringes this however never happened in Ireland or Scotland since the Romans never came that far so the culture and art which we think of today as Celt flourished in these places

  • @realworldred You said it yourself in the first line. The western seaboard has a mainly Spanish bloodline, many native Irish on that coast in particular have very hispanic features. The East coast influenced by the Vikings. If we must claim a race we are Milesian. Clergy in 5th and 6th century used Celtic man as our Idylic forefathers. Truth is we are a melting pot of bloodlines.

  • @hillman39 i take your point i am not claim to be a Celt im Irishman pure and simple. of course Ireland can no longer be consider Celtic there is a mix of cultures from both invasion and them randy goddamn sailors. i simple mean that at some stage there were indigenous people with "Celtic" culture in Ireland which managed to hold on a lot longer as the Romans didn't invade but of course other countries did eventually come and only a moron would claim to be a full-blood Celt .

  • @realworldred Fair point. Well made.

  • @Legionairius807 Why the harsh words for the Welsh? Many Welshmen "fought and died" in battles against Norman and English invaders. I don't think the Welsh see themselves as "no more than western English". Perhaps Elizabeth will live to see the opening of a Welsh parliament, and if not Elizabeth, then possibly Charles or William.

  • @McGrenzer there is a welsh parliament. the Welsh National Assembly.

  • @duncdohntuz Sorry to show my ignorance in print. Thanks for setting me straight.

  • @Legionairius807 thank's you're just true

  • @Legionairius807 hey that's not very nice what you say about the Welsh ... they suffered and died at the hands of the English too. Read your history (I'm Irish by the way)

  • Comment removed

  • i am i irish

  • This song is irish

  • @MrUsername1712 wow you worked that all out yourself??

  • This is the only song that I can stand Gordon's voice. Perhaps it the fabulous Chieftans that make it.

    Memories of Doolin.

  • Sorry, last i looked this was a comments page for the song,,,, not anyones family

  • About bonny Prince Charlie or Searlas Edbhiord Stiobhart and the despair of the irish after his exile to france...it says the harp no longer play sweet music, the cuckoo no longer sing at midday and the sun(phoebus) no longer rises in the morning....it compares the bonny prince to Ceasar and to a lion that has gone to hills "i bhfad i gcéin" or far away...the writes has'nt slept well since his exile and Irelands last hope seems to be gone...beautiful song.

  • listen to a techno version of this on my channel !!

  • im learnig this in school :) x

  • Great rendition for our heroes alive and departed in glory.

  • I want to stand up and salute! .. with tears.

  • anyone got the words...?

  • Bloody Hell what a racket.

  • Celtic and Arab worlds toghether !

against bad tongues, bad music and bad policy !

Our "hero" is the person who kill all zionists and leave all ethnicities and souls in peace !

  • Celtic and Arab worlds toghether !

against bad tongues, bad music and bad policy !

  • I have visited and loved many countries, but before dying it's Ireland where I want return, and , if possible, end my days

  • christ can no one stick up an Irish video on this with out it turning into a mini ill informed political/historical rant off, its a 3.25 video for a good song. relax to fuck!its gettin boring

  • @Mickla I agree. One of the most beautiful songs ever. But even 270 years in the future, these political issues are still kicked about. I know some Canadians still live in fear and loathing that a "Popist" army will invade them from the U.S. Yikes. Excuse me while I reach for my Laphroaig and a glass...

  • ahh fuck this crap talk . lets have a drink

  • fuck you unionofthebrits...you know nothing about ireland or irish people...you sound like a yank!

  • Written by an Irish McDonald for the Scots cause and sung by a Geordie

It about time we valued merit and not nationality

  • @ScotsLyon Not really for the Scots cause, Ireland and Scotland we're united in the goal to free their nations.

  • This should be our national anthem

  • Bonnie Prince Charlie - memories of a world that was not to be.

  • I really love this song, the sound, the sould of Irish people...

  • I love this song so much. No idea what they're singing of though... a hero, right? Mah, it's very awesome to listen to when I'm winding down.

I feel very idiotic for ever thinking this, but the first time I heard it-for some strange reason- i thought this song was French ... Haha, I felt dumb when I looked it up a while ago though. :D

  • to be proud to be part of an old european native people don't means to hate anyone :-)

Celtic music is a music of love...love for nature, love for people

the sword is to defend the freedom

    Roby

  • i am ful blood irish. born in free 'derry . raised in and around belfast. nice to hear my language . the chieftains and sting are brilliant.

  • Erin go Bragh is a racist chant? Where in the Hel would you hear something like that? Probably the public fool system.

  • I talk to nacho1560 not about the song, if you didn't get it

  • I love this song, the Chieftains, and all things Irish.........especially Ireland itself. The most beautiful island on earth. I treasure the time I spent there.

  • Bonnie Prince Charlie failed in only one respect. He brought a bunch of broadswords to a gun fight.

  • @lonepalm58 yea. too bad for him.

  • @irishfella1987 no man i was only askin scots gaelic as is 'what scots gaelic?!'

    im irish myself mo chara

  • @Fortyball Erin Go Bragh was an Irish chant but my name is based on it and my dad says it scotish but I believe it can be both irish and scotish when both cultures are pretty close to resemble each other and both cultures have gaelic tongue too bad they were forced to forget the language thanks to the british to do that >:[

  • @xoxspicygurlxox the Scottish chant would be Alba gu brath. ;) Erin go bragh means Ireland forever.

  • @PlentyofTorrents ahh i see ok sorry for the incorrections ^_^ I was named after that chant and my dad confuses me sometimes lol but thank you

  • @PlentyofTorrents Hey that's great thanks for sharing that I had to put Braveheart on "mute" to see/read what they were saying before the first battle. I love all things Celtic

  • @xoxspicygurlxox

the scottish ARE British, as are english wales Erin go bragh is an irish chant. alba gu brath is the highland scots chant, but remember that lowland scots spoke ulster-scots,which is a langue that mixes scottish and english together.

the lowland scots and hoghland scots did more fighting in scotland than the english did, and the irish kingdons caused more bloodshed in ireland than the english.

all nations of the british isles have bloody history.all have marvalous history also.

  • @UnionoftheBrits its been a while since I got a reply from my comment lol and no need to debate on this with me since I am only 16 and I am still learning and I know there is much history but I was putting down the side of my history from what I heard from my father but I dont fully believe him since he has hurt me before but when I was born he said Erin Go Bragh and they put my name as Erin and I wanna learn more about my culture and other cultures so I'm still learning so far.... sorry

  • @xoxspicygurlxox well i myself am only 17,lol, so i'm not going to claim to be experienced.

My family is part irish, and i do have family members who have been both part of the IRA, and part of the british army ,so there is alot of contrast in my family.

most irish people are proud to be irish, and don't feel the need to hate the english, but some do, and they took that chant as their slogan.

if i have a daughter, i myself plan to name her Erin, after the land and language, not the racist chant.
