Cool, \I know of a basketball toy I want to get when I have a budgie again :3 To those who have difficulty with training,it's easier to train if your budgie is only coming in contact with you as a trainer so he doesn't get confused. Also keep him from playing with another budgie till he is tame, since other budgies distract eachother and are harder 2 train. They r social and will seek you out as a playmate.Slowly begin to interact with them.More info if u ask me on my chanel.Dont want 2 spam here.
a way to get your parakeet to like you is to give it its favorite treat (it has to be the kind you hang on the cage) and hold it near the parakeet lifting your finger every now and then (slowly or it will get scared) so it realizes that your finger helps and not hurts. once you have done that you can put your finger in its cage sometimes and lift all fingers one at a time to show that your hand is the same is your finger. i cant get further than that though but it still knows your finger.
hey i had a bird and i got another bird one of my bird waz almost tamed and wen the other one came should i restart and tame thm both at the same time?

@Chivas072 all birds take time to get use to their new owners, so before you start making them do tricks they will need to get used to their surroundings. if you say your birds were abused then its going take a bit of time for them to gain trust in you. I've had my bird for about 2/ 3 years an I've tought it to blink 1 eye and to fly back to its cage on its own time, now im trying to teach it to go toilet as my mum complains it poop's everywhere, but i can see its going to take a bit of a while
Aw! That's cute! How long did it take to train them? I want to teach mines to do that! But I just got it today and they're (2 of them) are scared of me. :(
Whenever I come over to their cage, they stay still and when I walk away, they back away from me :(
@wishingstars163 I've found millet works wonders. They love it, and if you get long sprays of it, you can hold one end in your hand while they nibble at the other. Eventually, they will eat millet seeds right from the palm of your hand. I liked to sit quietly near Bibi as well, just so he'd get used to me and feel calm about me being near him.
@Ichijojichan You are right about the millet! I just discovered last night with my new budgie Moosh. He would let me feed him the millet spray & rub him with it. Next thing I knew he was letting me rub him with my finger :)
@Ichijojichan Mine Has Long Strands Of Millet In Its Cage, But When I Try To Feed It Some He Runs Away, And Also He Wont Go On My Finger Unless On A Certain Branch, Is There Anyway To Help Us Bond More
@wishingstars163 i got 2 parakeets too about 6 months ago....they were scared of me also...and all they do is bite bite bite! :( i gave them away to my cousins, and i learned that u have to have 1 parakeet for it to bond with u and for it to b trainable....cause if u have 2 they have each other as friends...if u have 1 it has nobody to play with and be friends with except u! so i would giv away one of urs, or both and get a brand new one to start over...
@wishingstars163 I also heard that you need to keep their cage high off the ground because they get scared when you look down on them and they prefer to look down on you.
@wishingstars163 u just leave them for three days and thn. thyl get use to the cage. and so u start taking it out. and playing with it. or u cud hand feed them sometimes. not all. make sure they have names for u to call them. thier smart birds. theyll know when u call they my saying thier name. if u keep say tht bird or u . u might as well name them tht. this probly didnt help cuz u know had yur bird for a year. but just so u kno
I'm confused, was the objective of this to get the parakeet to interact with the wheel? And if so, I doubt it's normal feed would be much of a reward. There are always millet spray and honey bars, my birds fall head over heels in love with those
@wazupwierdo well, if your cage is that big that you can fit in it, i dont see a budgie trying to escape, but if you mean stop the budgie from flying away from you when your not near the cage, then clip its wings, or a better idea, get a professional to clip its wings. :D
budgies are very intelligent people dont give them enough credit :) if you want to trick ideas mate go to a youtube channel called 'kiliparrot' it has some awesome tricks done by a budgie called duke
just because he is older doesnt mean you cant train him. according to budgie man the best age to train bugies is when they are 3 years old. and its harder to train them when young
That's some fantastic work there man.Though I wish I had a green budgie instead of a blue one.How do you teach it to spin the wheel and do all those tricks!!!
Clicker training! Look up Karen Pryor and read her books for more info. When I can afford a camera with sound, I'm going to make some "how-to" videos explaining how to clicker train any pet who likes treats.
its is when you have a bottel cap or somthing thats makes a clicking sound you do this sound when ever thay do the task right then reword them with somthing fun or food and thay asoseate it with( i do this i get a reward) works well with most animals
Yes and yes. Clicker training (Operant conditioning) is the only way to go with birds. I know wing clipping is controversial, but it absolutely helps with training and taming, especially with a bird who was not hand fed as a baby.
i just bought budgies both 4 weeks old and hand raised. When i got them home they were lost but adapted easily next day the female bird let me approach it and i started touching its tummy and no reaction while the male not so keen would move away when approached but not bite.
They both can't fly properly cos there young and by 3rd day i managed to get the female on my finger but it stayed there for 2 mins then went off. Any advice training them.
I have the same exact wheel (but a different color!) I only put seeds in it and he will eat the seeds... but he'll get confused... He's not hand fed sadly. But I still <3 him a lot! You bird is adorable too!
@xVikaBla if you dont want your best friend budgie to fly into a window and break its beak/ neck then clipping the wings is what you do. Just make sure to get a professional unless you are one. If you cut them to short, youll hurt the bird, if its too long they will be able to fly, somewhat.
@xVikaBla acctually i was moving a troublesome female and her mate to a new cage, the boy loves me so he was no problem but the female is a real bitch. for somereason she couldnt get back up the cage when she fell to the floor so as im trying to get her she keeps falling on her wings stragely untill it ripped out one of her fly feathers, leaving her bleeding for a few secounds.
He might just be scared. Be extra nice to him, talk to him sweetly and offer him treats from your hand. Don't ever try to grab him. An easy mental shortcut is to imagine how you would feel and want you would want if you were in such a tiny, fragile body. Humans are scary enough, even to other humans. Say nice things, be kind and consistent. You'll get there.
I think I would suggest on letting the parakeets getting to know you. I'm learning too because my parakeets were abused so it's rather hard. But you should look up for some tips. Don't abuse your parakeets or they'll ignore you and lable you as DANGER. You can look at expert village videos.. type in expert village parakeet training or somthing like that. hope this helps!
I just got a new parakeet yesterday I'm looking for help to get him used to be and let me touch it. I think it's a budgie if that helps if someone knows how to do it add a post please
I really need help. I had my blue parakeet, Julio for almost a year. The problem is that whenever I put my hand in the cage to put in a toy or to change food/water, he freaks out and flys everywhere. And whenever I let him out of the cage, he crashes into walls. Plz give me tips or websites that can help me solve this problem.☺
First, get his wings clipped. For your situation, have a vet or professional groomer do this. Gradually change his food from seeds to pellets (read the bag). Add fruits and veggies (NOT avocado) too. Then you can begin offer millet, which is candy for parakeets, from your hand. Start with a very long spray of millet and let him nibble the end. Each day, you can bring your hand closer. Soon, let him perch on your hand (still inside his cage) to eat the millet. Make gradual steps from there.
No offence but it's not rock science to clip their wings, but obviously if it's your first clipping get someone that's done it before, not particularly a "Professional"... Who are you Paris Hilton?
Take it easy. For Dolphingirl and Julio, a vet or groomer is their best option. It's not tricky to trim wings, but can cause fear for an untamed bird. Julio is already "freaking out" merely at his owner putting her hand in his cage. The last thing he needs is to associate more fear with her. Wing trims aren't expensive. As a bonus, Dolphingirl can be Julio's hero when she "rescues" him from the groomer and takes him home. Your first wing clip you've got to do yourself, or it isn't YOUR wing clip
wat i do is i take them out(after tons of difficulties) and i dont let them go (no matter how much they bite) then i put them next to my heart so they hear the beating and that usually calms them down
I went back and bought a second one right away. That made a huge difference and they love millet spray. My last parakeet never did like to come out of his cage and couldn't bribe him with millet spray either. I say hello to them a lot, and leave the cage open a lot. Two was the trick for us and bribing with millet spray! Good luck!
mine are like that too tey waont listing to me and scared 2 get out there cage lol soo how can i train mine to be like youres plz plz maeesage back and help me...!!!!!o and ooche he cute...ps wat food do u feed it....??
LOL Boomer will spin the ferris wheel with his foot like, to get the seed inside the dishes that are out of reach. I never thought of him doing it on command =o
i bought some budgies with barely any lines on thier head like 5 and they r really active but they r scared of me and i had them for like 5 months im getting their wings clipped do u think their gonna be nicer
I've had a blue parakeet, Toby, for five years, and I can't train him, I can barely touch him without him trying to rip my nails off, I've been trying to handle him as much as is healthily possible, but he's practically untameable to a certain point, I had another bird who was nicer but he died. anyway. I'm so envious! your bird is sooo smart. mine doesn't respond to treats or anything! lucky you!
my parakeet does the same thing as urs gooooooofygoober, his name is baldy. I am trying to train him. I try hold him gloves or a sock over my hands first. Then when he knows that it doesn't hurt me when he bites me then he won't bite u with the gloves off. It worked with mine and hopefully it will work with toby :-)
see guys if u have 1 parakeet u get alot more friendly with it and get it one of thos platic birds looks like a mini parakeet and put is on the toys or near it and the parakeet will play with it
i try to get my parakeet out of the cage but he wong come out! i get him on my finger then move him closer to the door and he jumps off! check out my video of it!
Every time my budgie makes a sharp move toward my hand i just tap him on the head lightly. actually, sometimes i dont even touch him i just pretend like im gunna tap him and move my hand rapidly close to his head head and away again. After that if he keeps trying to bite me, i keep trying to hit him lolzz , he eventually gets the idea of how annoying it is and he stops biting. :D
every time i take my budgie kiwi out of his cage he shakes like crazy! i feel so bad for him i sometimes almost start crying:'( can anybody help me get him calmed down? i keep trying to talk to him and say encouraging words like "come on, you are soo brave" but he always shakes like a leaf. i feel soooooo bad for him....
if i try and stroke him he will turn around and try and bit my finger...(he won't let go either)...mabey i can just get him a buddy and leave them in the cage to just be budgies...
no that will make him or her more aggressive in protection. they bond to one person. it just takes time. mine bites mt finger too. try gently blwing on him when he does. its mostly a domanance thing
Mine used to do that. Mostly, I will say that having their wings clipped until they are trained helps. Also, when he bit me, I pushed smoothly into the bite instead of pulling away. After a week of this, he stopped biting. What stopped him from being so scared was to keep him with me while doing regular things: typing, watching TV, carefully picking up a mess... in this way, he got used to my regular movement. Every keet has stuff to learn. Mine's still terrified of crinkly sounds.
my keet's wings are trimmed! he didn't really like that part :O doesn't it hurt though when you push into the bite? cause now sometimes he will only make a sharp movement towards my hand and that makes me jump most of the time. is that a bad thing because after i jump he squaks and does a head bobby thing...
my budgie petie has an INCREDIBLY good nature, you wont even beleive this. when i got my budgie home from the pet store he was scared and timid. i could not get near him inside his cage. i just talked to him nicely everyday and about 2 weeks later he was sitting on my shoulder happy as can be. he is now VERY loud and not timid AT ALL. he loves attention and soming out of his cage to play. he never bites of hurts you and he says 'prettyboy' 'i love you' 'hello' and 'petie' (his name)
hey, I have a budgie who hates me very much but I got him to sit on my finger but he just jumps off of it and flies away... Whenever I go near him he always poops from fear. Can you guve me some tips on how you talked to your budgie? and how long each day? thank you
i talked to him for about ten minutes a day usually more. i would just say quietly "hello petie" "nice budie" and things like that, u could just have a one way conversation with him/her so they know u dont hurt them. whilst talking hold your hand on the side of the cage and try whistling after a while put your hand in the cage and you could talk or whistle. get him on your finger and do the same with him in the cage. let them know that you dont mean any harm try feeding treats to make them happy
its just scared.... just always play with him and hell come to u!! ive got a parakeet to and he talks he just repeats what we say... he come on my head my shoulders my finger!!! but when we first bought him he was always scared............
p.s. always get him a toy mine has a tennis ball and he stands on it and balances it or he just rolls it around... a ping pong ball can be fine to and soon ill post a video of him so check it out!!! :)
i had the same problem jsut keep him/her in its cage for a while and pet them every once and a while and wait a month or two and it should be nice and calm by the time you take the parakeet out.

@xVikaBla acctually i was moving a troublesome female and her mate to a new cage, the boy loves me so he was no problem but the female is a real bitch. for somereason she couldnt get back up the cage when she fell to the floor so as im trying to get her she keeps falling on her wings stragely untill it ripped out one of her fly feathers, leaving her bleeding for a few secounds.

i have the same kind of bird but it is mean to me. he bites me too!!!!!!!!!!!
ign638091 2 years ago
He might just be scared. Be extra nice to him, talk to him sweetly and offer him treats from your hand. Don't ever try to grab him. An easy mental shortcut is to imagine how you would feel and want you would want if you were in such a tiny, fragile body. Humans are scary enough, even to other humans. Say nice things, be kind and consistent. You'll get there.

I got my parakeet 2month ago. I have no idea how to be friend with my parakeet and i really want it to come on my finger and play with me
jhsh9928 3 years ago
I think I would suggest on letting the parakeets getting to know you. I'm learning too because my parakeets were abused so it's rather hard. But you should look up for some tips. Don't abuse your parakeets or they'll ignore you and lable you as DANGER. You can look at expert village videos.. type in expert village parakeet training or somthing like that. hope this helps!

DolphinGirl347 3 years ago
I know nothing about parakeets, but Did you try a Google search for example, with this phrase? -
parakeet training tips
MechaBlazeEagle 3 years ago
First, get his wings clipped. For your situation, have a vet or professional groomer do this. Gradually change his food from seeds to pellets (read the bag). Add fruits and veggies (NOT avocado) too. Then you can begin offer millet, which is candy for parakeets, from your hand. Start with a very long spray of millet and let him nibble the end. Each day, you can bring your hand closer. Soon, let him perch on your hand (still inside his cage) to eat the millet. Make gradual steps from there.
Ichijojichan 3 years ago
Thnx that wuz really helpful!☺
DolphinGirl347 3 years ago
No offence but it's not rock science to clip their wings, but obviously if it's your first clipping get someone that's done it before, not particularly a "Professional"... Who are you Paris Hilton?
nicoletot 3 years ago
Take it easy. For Dolphingirl and Julio, a vet or groomer is their best option. It's not tricky to trim wings, but can cause fear for an untamed bird. Julio is already "freaking out" merely at his owner putting her hand in his cage. The last thing he needs is to associate more fear with her. Wing trims aren't expensive. As a bonus, Dolphingirl can be Julio's hero when she "rescues" him from the groomer and takes him home. Your first wing clip you've got to do yourself, or it isn't YOUR wing clip

wat i do is i take them out(after tons of difficulties) and i dont let them go (no matter how much they bite) then i put them next to my heart so they hear the beating and that usually calms them down

my parakeet is afraid of everything..
i don't know how to train her...
I NEED HELP!!!!!!!
xxcrispyxxbunnyxx 3 years ago
I went back and bought a second one right away. That made a huge difference and they love millet spray. My last parakeet never did like to come out of his cage and couldn't bribe him with millet spray either. I say hello to them a lot, and leave the cage open a lot. Two was the trick for us and bribing with millet spray! Good luck!

I love this video- I bought two parakeets and they are so much fun already! I'm going to work on training them like you did in this video.

I've had a blue parakeet, Toby, for five years, and I can't train him, I can barely touch him without him trying to rip my nails off, I've been trying to handle him as much as is healthily possible, but he's practically untameable to a certain point, I had another bird who was nicer but he died. anyway. I'm so envious! your bird is sooo smart. mine doesn't respond to treats or anything! lucky you!
goooooofygoober 3 years ago
my parakeet does the same thing as urs gooooooofygoober, his name is baldy. I am trying to train him. I try hold him gloves or a sock over my hands first. Then when he knows that it doesn't hurt me when he bites me then he won't bite u with the gloves off. It worked with mine and hopefully it will work with toby :-)

heysunshines 3 years ago
maybe just put him on your finger and not say anythng but stroke him lightly
barnbum0204 3 years ago
if i try and stroke him he will turn around and try and bit my finger...(he won't let go either)...mabey i can just get him a buddy and leave them in the cage to just be budgies...
heysunshines 3 years ago
no that will make him or her more aggressive in protection. they bond to one person. it just takes time. mine bites mt finger too. try gently blwing on him when he does. its mostly a domanance thing
barnbum0204 3 years ago
k i will try that thankz ;)
heysunshines 3 years ago
good luck ;-)
barnbum0204 3 years ago
Mine used to do that. Mostly, I will say that having their wings clipped until they are trained helps. Also, when he bit me, I pushed smoothly into the bite instead of pulling away. After a week of this, he stopped biting. What stopped him from being so scared was to keep him with me while doing regular things: typing, watching TV, carefully picking up a mess... in this way, he got used to my regular movement. Every keet has stuff to learn. Mine's still terrified of crinkly sounds.
elewho 3 years ago
my keet's wings are trimmed! he didn't really like that part :O doesn't it hurt though when you push into the bite? cause now sometimes he will only make a sharp movement towards my hand and that makes me jump most of the time. is that a bad thing because after i jump he squaks and does a head bobby thing...
heysunshines 3 years ago

my budgie petie has an INCREDIBLY good nature, you wont even beleive this. when i got my budgie home from the pet store he was scared and timid. i could not get near him inside his cage. i just talked to him nicely everyday and about 2 weeks later he was sitting on my shoulder happy as can be. he is now VERY loud and not timid AT ALL. he loves attention and soming out of his cage to play. he never bites of hurts you and he says 'prettyboy' 'i love you' 'hello' and 'petie' (his name)
lilblackpony 3 years ago
hey, I have a budgie who hates me very much but I got him to sit on my finger but he just jumps off of it and flies away... Whenever I go near him he always poops from fear. Can you guve me some tips on how you talked to your budgie? and how long each day? thank you
DynoMightySav 3 years ago
i talked to him for about ten minutes a day usually more. i would just say quietly "hello petie" "nice budie" and things like that, u could just have a one way conversation with him/her so they know u dont hurt them. whilst talking hold your hand on the side of the cage and try whistling after a while put your hand in the cage and you could talk or whistle. get him on your finger and do the same with him in the cage. let them know that you dont mean any harm try feeding treats to make them happy

There are a couple ways of doing it. Go out and buy a couple books, they're usually pretty resourceful.
S0XF0X 3 years ago
i had the same problem jsut keep him/her in its cage for a while and pet them every once and a while and wait a month or two and it should be nice and calm by the time you take the parakeet out.
