Beautiful beautiful song, have loved it for years! Finally decided I would try to learn it.
Went to Ackerman's website and got the tuning he uses from there:
G-C-F-Bb-D#-G#. Don't even bother trying it. You will guaranteed break your high E string going to G or G# every time. I just trashed three new sets of strings attempting it. I don't know how Will does it unless he uses strings other than what he claims to use. He says he uses D'addario light Phosphor-Bronze, which is exactly what I'm usi
I shared this song with my daughter. She was sad at the time, so I shared this video to say I love her. She thought it was beautiful & others heard it from FaceBook post and commented positive. You are SO talented/Blessed. To think anyone would dislike such beautiful music. They just don't understand what guitar music is, how beautiful, peaceful & how it fills the heart with melody. Amazing and thank you for sharing. Debby

After getting out of the Army, I went to college in North Dakota, at NDSU-Bottineau. Having been a below-average student in High School, the military matured me significantly. Have two majors: Parks and Rec. Mgt, and Fisheries and Wildlife Technologies. Lots of Biology, and all the other life sciences. Tons of reading and studying. I had a collection of Will's tapes and would play them while studying. It got me to the Dean's List a few times!
Will Ackerman is what I found upon returning to college in California in the fall of 1980 after a year away on the East Coast. I recall the exact occasion of my introduction, a weekend day away from campus with my new roomies in one of the alternative coops on campus. We were in and around a little cabin next to a forest stream, the sun beaming in through the tree cover to bring the leaf-covered clearing to glowing half light. The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter was the 1st magic I heard...
This song is such a compliment to my Mother, who was a "Brick Layers Daughter" We play it everytime we go to visit her grave and share a memory or two. Thank you so much for such a fine piece of musical masterpice.
This is the first piece of guitar music that I heard that got me into listening to 'American fingerstyle Guitar' , then it was , Hedges, Kottke, now Mckee, Ross, Dufour, ect. But this was the piece that started it all. It still has a profound effect on my mind and heart.
@moh2o Thanx!!! Ackerman & Hedges are THE REASON I play acoustic guitar. Hope you like MY version on Will's tune, "IMPENDING DEATH..." I play with Michael Manring. Check it out!
When I was in college, attending North Dakota State University - Bottineau and Institute of Forestry, I had a couple of his tapes, and would play them while I studied learning all the genus and species names.tons of them! Totally mind blowing all the stuff I had to memorize, listening to William, totally got me focused! For someone who graduated with a "D" average...I made the Dean's list my second quarter. My parents were blown away! It was "who are you, and what have you done with our son?
How many moments this has carried my spirit over the years since I first heard it, and now in the field with Hospice Chaplaincy, it carries other spirits over, into, and beyond ~ Thank you William Ackerman ~
I was just looking through a box of old vinyl albums and found 'Passage' amounst a few other 'Windham Hill' albums. Sadly I don't have a working record deck at the moment having gone 85% to CD. The album predates my wedding and my wife had never heard it so I took a chance on Youtube. Thanks for uploading it dakotarose06. I can't get any where near playing it on the guitar. Thats why I now play Celtic mandolin, smaller neck, less of a stretch!
@zmanofwar3 ---- Most people I know today do not have the patience to listen beyond the first few notes before judging it........I don't give a @@@ what anyone else says, this is good stuff....
During the late 1980s, WCVE-TV 23 (Richmond, VA) used to air parts of this track as fill music between instructional shows; however, I did not know it by title until I found this video.
This is one beautiful piece of music; THANK YOU for bringing back such great memories for me.
That's exactly how my guitar sounds when I'm out in a field sitting on the tailgate of my truck... with my camera man. Oh yeah, don't forget the log. That's essential to the guitar tone. BTW, great song and playing.
i lived in iceland when i was a boy, and my dad used to play this song in the car while we were driving through the glaciers and the mountains. i just found this song again after not having heard it for 20 years and i bawled
There's definitely a 12 string playing. Probably just played his 6 string for this video shoot. I love how it's just him on his truck's tailgate for this video. lol
I suggest listening to this song as you travel through the Sequoias. It will transport you. Actually anytime I hear this I am healed. Thank you for this.
Yeah, I love this, so simple, so beautiful. I'm tired of the hot-fast-talent sort of skill-competition thing that's going on in guitar work now. Will puts us in touch with something essential. So much of musicianship now lacks heart because it's more about showing off technical capacity than it is about sharing heart. I'll take a bad singer/guitarist any day who has heart than an ultra-coached show-off. I love it when a song transports me rather than impresses me about skill levels.
This song translates me back in time..I've always loved this album..and especially this song! I played it for my sons all the time..especially at Christmastime...as they climbed into bed...To this day, they totally remember those memories and speak of it often. One of my sons recently learned to play it on his guitar. It was the best!
I got to see William at the Stanford Memorial Church (CA) years ago.. the acoustics in the building were utterly phenomenal and an amazing compliment to his style of playing. It was a flawless performance too.
Everyone likes this one - I do too - but "Dawn Treader" is my favorite. It took me a few years but I learned how to play it, maybe I'll post that on youtube sometime. No one can play it like Will, tho.
I like to bodyboard at pipe too (if I can get waves, that is!)
What I really wanted to say is,.. He seems to make love with the music. The Guitar and he are a part of one another. Poetry of sound flows out from him through the instrument. So moving...
I remember your music was always there for me in good times and bad times pointing always at one direction :hope.Thank you so much Will. And thanks for all the hours trying to figure out those "crazy" tunings in my guitar .
A beautiful guitar playing a passionate man in love with sound. I have always remembered being in love listening to this song for over 2 decades. Will Ackerman states loves truth.
