Those diamond shaped lights that appear in the background at just about every one of their concerts should become an official member of Them Crooked Vultures
godDAMN i love the feel of this song. the meter-switching, that amazing mandolin line by JPJ, the long notes sung by Josh, Grohl's rhythms, and Alain's long droney notes.
Just imagine the second record... If this and You Can't Possibly Begin To Imagine How Small The Tape Recorder Must've Been are examples of the new vultures stuff it's gonna be a bloody awesome record
@stratmaniac You Can't Possibly Begin To Imagine How Small The Tape Recorder Must've Been is not the actual name of the song it was only used to show that the guy who taped it had small tape recorder it's called You Can't Possibly Begin To Imagine.
@sjmeck Its 4/4 for 24 bars. Then it alternates on one bar of 4/4 one bar of 5/4 one bar of 4/4 one bar of 6/4 through the "They'll catch up- I know they will....". When Grohl drops that busy groove including just about everything Bonham did in his 140 bpm+ grooves it goes back to 4/4 until the next "The sun sets on Highway One..." when it hits the muddle of time signatures. The trick is to count 9 crotchets and then 10.
@renzolikescheez: I do believe he is using an "airline" guitar. They're quite unusual in shape and tone. Jack white has used them frequently throughout his songs in the white stripes. That's why the song has that plucky kind of feel aswell. Look up "ball and buiscuit" by the white stripes, and you'll hear the same sound to highway 1. Live long THEM CROOKED VULTURES!!! :D
@bornguitarhero95 jack white doesn't use airline guitars. he uses montgomery ward jb hutto guitars from the sixties. white's are made of plastic and have singlecoil pickups that look like humbuckers whereas the eastwood copies are made of wood and have normal humbuckers.
this song is unreal. saw them do it live and it destroyed all the other songs into tiny scraps that only dreamed they were a single note played on that mandolin. oh hell yes.
@5Cincinnatus which is actually a very good reason to keep it off. Imo, album coherence is one of the most vital parts of musicianship. Don't worry though, they'll find a place for this awesomeness, either on a single or on another album.
the chorus in this sounds like a bad boy band from the 90s and that is a major reason this song should never have seen the light of day. apart from that no complaints about the band.
You know, Id think so too but in an interview JPJ said they were going to release an EP with surplus material. Also someone said that they asked Alian backstage and he said a new EP was going to be released in January.
I know they are going to be releasing new material sometime (a new album has basically been confirmed for this year), but it looks like it's a little for anything to surface in January. Dave has said that stuff is coming "sooner than we think' and JPJ has said that this song will surface at some point.
Yeah hopefully they'll release it sooner then later. This song should not have been cut from the album and I'm waiting for when they'll release the studio version.
they probably look a bit dead as most audiences do when they're digesting totally new music to their ears... I've seen it quite often. If you watch some of their earlier shows, Joshua eludes to it often.
apparently they recorded 19 (i think?) songs in the beginning, and 13 went on the first album, however they didn't wanna release the other ones as b-sides because they thought they were soo much better. So my guess, is THIS and the rest of them are going on the 2nd album, which is almost completed and should be released by next summer much to my suprise and disbelief. My my, those vultures...constantly satisfying...non-stop! That's how all men should be!
Anyway, these are the names of the other songs: Brake Glass, Bombs Away, Dead Wrong, Highway One, ORCA, You Can't Possibly Begin to Imagine. and Paved Death.

With a guitar solo sure, its fun, but it only lasts a few minutes.
