as far as i know, "this one is on him". good promotional tool! crappy career move, tho. big time disappointment. the whole idea of a freebie is delusional.
I don't think Trent Reznor needs to worry about career moves at this point. The guy went from messin' with beats as a janitor in a recording studio to a millionaire making music in a few years. With a cult following, and guaranteed income, all he's focusing on now is the art he wants to make, audio, visual, whatever. He doesn't need a job now: he's doing what he wants (and what we want).
The fact that he's already an established act doesnt mean he can go careless about his career. Whether intentionally or not, whatever he does means something to his audience. This new album is a "slip" in the history of NIN. It doesn't feel as much fun as his previous work. It lacks heart; it's a rush to market differently quickly and at any expense.
But I still like NIN so We all Are still In This Together :-)
It does seem like a rush to market... But I don't think he would rush anything he wasn't comfortable with, especially something he can release on his own time. I mean, he made it quickly but he's too much of a perfectionist to release anything that doesn't live up to his expectations. I think he's just in an artsy do-my-own-thing-and-fuck-you-record-companies mood. It'll pass. In the meantime, listen to this. Or Year Zero. Or Ghosts. >: ]
Ghosts and The Slip are so awesome. The idea of attaching specific pieces of artwork to each song is really ingenious. It does a great job of including the listener. Anyone who listens to the music and also views the artwork for that song consciously or not makes their own inferences about the song and how the art corresponds.
Trent's plan for free download is great because he makes a clear stand about which side he is on in the marketing game...the consumer's.
is this album like a followup to Year Zero's whole storyline? cause that would be sweet. Idk, just "The Slip" sounds like Trent's character (The one taken in the survivilism video) got away or something. Maybe I'm just talking out my ass.
sounds like a cat being strangled

As for the song... It's catchy, ya. Great music? I'm well over that debate since I realized Trent's about something else than "great music".

Amazed that Trent is releasing the album for free. I guess the record company didn't fund this release either?

Yeah, I agree.
