I was on this fire back in the early 2000's. We held a memorial at camp. I believe it was the Cannon fire. Every morning we would drive pass the wreckage in a field. The tail was the only thing that you could recognize still standing erect. I took aphoto to remind me of lose. A haunting reminder of the price paid for others.
It was a wing box failure, which is the structure that joins the 2 wings together where they pass through the fuselage. When it failed, the 2 wings folded like a piece of paper, as you can see in the video. I had been around this tanker when it would fly out of Hemet, & its terrible to see 3 heroes end this way. God rest their souls. We lost Tanker 82 (another C-130A) in this same way a couple years later. Afterwards the entire C-130 fleet was inspected, & many had the wing box stress fractures.

"Walker Fire" 2002...Walker, CA ( just south of Carson City, NV). My Engine (USFS E-43) was first "on scene" at crash site. Pilot was a local and former "ground pounder" from our area...RIP Steve and Crew..."ALWAYS!".

The fire was just outside of Walker California. The date was Jun 16th 2001. I flew that very same plane. They were my friends. DON'T DOUBT IT FOR A SECOND. THIS WAS REAL AS REAL CAN GET.

Your car is not made of aluminum alloy, which does not have the resistance to cyclical stress failure that steel or titanium have. Your car's entire weight is not supported by its doors under extreme loading in high G turns. And incidentally you're damn right the doors will fall off due to corrosion unless you park it in the desert for 15 years. However your self admitted humility is commendable, so I can't be too much of a deek about it.

The cameraman was so pumped about the shot of a lifetime, he didn't even think of the human lives lost.he "OH, SHIT!" from the fire fighters was more about how complicated their lives had suddenly become. I've been there, okay. I even saw a fire (minor, luckily) start in a Herc taking off.
This is a result of the age and heavy use that most of these aircraft have gone through. The design is nearly 50 years old, after all.
