Went to many shows in mid 80's the energy that was there before they went on stage was powerful-I'm getting chills as I write this and listen to this song. The end was difficult to watch-had left the scene in the early 90's-to much. Will never foregt the 1st song I heard and I was hooked. Thank you Jerry-you'll soon never be forgotten. Gods Speed---
I find that as I get older I enjoy the later Dead shows. When I was touring in the 80's, I thought I missed out on the 60's and 70's. But, once you hit 40, nothing can match the degree of regret and brokenness in Jerry's voice in the late 80's.
@brainmed I agree- and there are similar developments in his guitar playing- he matured overall. Of course the decline in the mid 90's was precipitous and difficult to watch, the late 80s and early 90's had a depth- I think it was there all along, but it just came to the forefront- also, check out 1985 for some painfully emotional moments.
@brainmed yep late 80's were the shit dude. I didnt like Jerry's voice in the early 80's. he sounded like he smoked 6 packs a day. For my money 89-90 were the 2 Best years for the Dead.
Today on XM Dead Ch. I heard a 1990's version of "To Lay Me Down".... It was utterly and completely sick!!! Does anyone know the date of the venue????
I will never forget this moment as long as I live. All three shows in this run were simply amazing!!!!! 1987-1990 w/Brent will go down in Grateful Dead history as a golden age in their history!
So gorgeous. I LOVE this show. The sequence of Thin Man > Cumberland > Me & My Uncle > To Lay Me Down > Let it Grow from the first set is really, really well played. In fact, I think I'm going to go listen to it now...
1988 To Lay Me Down 3/27/88 4/1/88 9/16/88 10/2/88 10/16/88. Those are the five. Hampton was the best of the 5 for my money, although 4/1 is very good. It would be nice to see any and all of the others. Anybody?

Ballad of a Thin Man from 3/27/88 now up. Best wishes to all from Less Than Face Productions.

To Lay Me Down
To lay me down, once more
to lay me down with my head in sparklin' clover
to lay me down, on e last time, to lay me down
To be with you, once more, to be with you.
With our bodies close together

I hadn't realized before that Jerry Bob Brent and Phil all sing on this.
Those were the days.
Seems like a few weeks ago, the eighties.
Life moves quick.
Then you're gone.

Sweet version!
This was the bust out of this great tune after being on hiatus since 1983 so it has that special kind of energy.
