Well, I only just started practicing the drums this week so I got a metronome to help me improve speed/accuracy (mainly left hand speed). Surprisingly enough I've already gotten my raw speed (without this technique) up to 180 BPMs. But I do get really tense after about 5 minutes or so. So I'll definitely try this.

What you stated about stress is the most important thing you said. A lot of Jo Jo teaching here. The question is to get the hand motion to reach 140. I run into a stress point before I can get to that marking. I have the motion but to get it to 140 is the challenge.

about push-pull technique, I think you definitely had better to keep it as a mere "trick", like gravity blast.. I mean, not basing your fast drumming on this technique solely, for it won't build your wrists and fingers properly IMO (and you need rebound, moreover)
