Actually, any sullivan scholar can tell you that the "Matter" trio was only written for Ruddigore, and was never in Pirate (whatever stage of the libretto you look at). It was a choice, along with "sorry her lot" from Pinafore, by Papp to fill out what he thought was a short second act with not enough "big" numbers for his stars.
Our drama department is putting on a show using some of the music from Gilbert and Sullivan, including this song! Try teaching this to High School students! I sure have my job cut out for me! Thanks for this!
this song was cut before it was put on stage then sullivan put it in ruddigore with robin a.k.a sir riven mugertroyd, margret mugertroyed o.k.a mad margret and despard mugertroyd.
i have a book with all the lyrics in it and also has a note saying we're the song would've been in the opera. then if you listen to the same song on ruddigore it's the same tune but the lyrics where slightly changed.
i so wish there was a karaoke version!

This melody was also used as the "Typing Speed Test" in the Broadway musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie"

That's true; this song is technically from Ruddigore. The movie makers just took it, changed a few words, and stuck it in.
But I love it anyway. :)

Good luck with that! My Highschoolers never did quite learn it. Sad to say it came out rather awful, but they did try!

you missed "my" from "and my moral senses" in the first part, and later on, the other operetta they refer to is Ruddigore, not Roddigore.
