I think I've seen it 45,000 times all by myself. LOL...I've put this link, all over the place, One of the best things I've ever saw or heard done on a guitar. Thanks for keeping it up..
@Chromatype It's oinly called racing when the tempo increases. Sax playeres are usually accompanied by a rhythm section which locks the tempo down, leaving them to fly all over the shop. Two guitarists aren't the same thing, and they can feed off each other. Scotty is brilliant, but he has form in the "racing stakes"- check out the Mystery Train opening of his Hot Licks vid w/Arlen Roth and he is definitely pushing the tempo faster.
Did you really try to compare Scotty Anderson to Chet? Not even REMOTELY close, Chet started the damn style as we know it, and he perfected it. Scotty is a great player, and his phrasing is normally great, but not when he showboats; Chet wasn't like that.
@guitarman63mm: Chet himself said of Scotty,"The man plays like he's doubled-parked!" and dozens of the world's best guitarists besides Chet have attested to Scotty's brilliance. Showboating? Nope, just a different way of hearing and playing the instrument that Chet, is all. Both men were brilliant, but had different styles. Scotty is a country-jazz performer, primarily. Chet played alot of styles, but wasn't a jazz player to the degree Anderson is. That's my two cents worth...
OK, so this makes me want to quit playing. But the most amazing thing is that Scotty is playing a Telecaster (Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, etc.). It's not supposed to sound like that. And how does he tuck away that flat pick when he is in finger picking mode? To sum up, you've just witnessed a true miracle.
Scotty is amazing, but to answer your questions...
1) It doesn't sound like KR or BS's Teles because it has a humbucker in the neck (and a dark one at that) and he's using all neck pickup... if he were using the bridge pickup it would presumably have a lot more twang to it.
And 2) He isn't hiding a flatpick, he's wearing a thumbpick and just holds his index finger against it as one would a flatpick when he's playing fast single-note runs.
@writerdave: Anderson's style alternates using the thumbpick (TP) alone and also TP plus his fingers, to play faster single-note, double, and triple stop runs as well as chords. His style is very idiosyncratic, and unique perhaps only to him. With his spreading renown, there are a few people doing what he does, or trying to, but not many. He's a marvel.
Notice Saxton sitting out when Scot was doing those bass melody lines. He did it all. Plays triple stops faster than most players do single lines. Utterly amazing.
Applause, applause!! This was sensational! I love the back and forth playing and allowing each to grab a piece of the song for himself! Thanks to Chordwayze for sending me here!
Hi bepop.. The same thing I have to do sometimes, when the arthritis kicks in and the thumb joint starts to ache. Bring the fingers over from the other side, to ease the pain! That might not be Bob's reason as it is a stylistic trick some players use anyway. You see it a lot whenever two people play simultaneously on the same guitar. These two guys are great though.. Yeah? Regards
that's what i love about music; you can take any song and interpret it any way you want. these men (especially the one on the left) are absolutely suberb!
it's always hard to admit someone better than your heroes but Scotty Anderson, Lenny Breau, Johny Smith, and Wes Mongomery are probably the finest players with great technical and pristine playing, But Danny Gatton is the most explosive, not quicker than Scotty(there is a difference). Listen to the recent release 1977 Live Danny Gatton and see what you think. Master collector
I stand to be corrected but I'm certain Scotty is playing the bass line as well as the melody. I've never heard playing like this before. I first picked up a guitar over 30 years ago. I should be ashamed of myself !!!
I agree, Scotty is perfect just like Johny Smith but there is something interesting about the way a Danny Gatton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jeff Beck plays that captures our attention!!
No, there is no bass player that's just Scott. I've been playing bass for Scotty for last 13 years and let me tell you, sometimes there is no need to show up. He can do it all on his own!
How are you, remember me from Chicago at the last 2 years Plainview Farm in Cincinnatti. I usually sit in the corner with my cam corder and cooler. I usually give Scotty someof my colletor tapes, videos, and audios. Don from Chicago-Master Collector
I have been involved in music performance for 37 years but I musta just fell off the turnip truck cuz I ain't never heard of this cat. I do hope there is a fire extinguisher close by cuz that there Tele is about to burst into flames !!! WOW !!! ...and this cat has a day gig? How sad for the producers and A&R folks that let this one get away.
unbelievable I`d never heard of him before I`m 64 been playing since I was twelve thought I was good I play a JJ guitar through a green 80watt Trace Elliot great sound it took me years to get my sound I`m taking up the violin now?
Scotty is one the best least known guitarists in the world, I have heard him play live many times and not only is he a great talent but a genuinely nice guy. I am a huge fan of TE and Doyle Dykes but not every musician aspires to that kind of fame, some just play for the sheer joy and Scotty is a sheer joy to listen to.
It's difficult to argue about guitarists with this level of talent, but Scotty is different in ways that are hard to put into words. I hope you are lucky enough to see him live.
you are stuckbelow, but everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion. The other guitarists you mention are certainly differently styled for the most part, but all are wonderfully talented.
It's an older Tele with a stock pickup in the bridge, and a Gibson Pearly Gates p/u in the neck. I asked him about this at the show in the video (after I caught my breath.) To play the two part double stops: yep, it's a thumbpick, and he sticks his index finger out straight (like you're measuring an inch with thumb and 1st) and plays up and down strokes WITH BOTH. Who told him he could do that? And what about Bob? A real gift for arrangements on the fly.
WOW! I met Scotty Anderson when I was on the road in 1987 in Johnson City, Tenn. He was a Yamaha guitar rep back then, and I was in a music store playing a guitar and this guy tells me, " You want to hear one of the world's greatest guitarists?" I said sure...and I walked upstairs and heard Scotty for the first time. He was amazing 20 years ago....and a great guy to boot.
Didn't know a Telecaster could like that. It sounds like a Gibson/Gretsch. Maybe he changed the pickups. The fretboard on a telecaster is great. Great playing!
@guitarjjte I know your site which is great for gypsy jazz....I would like to hear Scotty , Birelli, Sylvain Luc, Joscho on the same program....There are few who can play at this level....Scotty needs a wider audience no doubt....
pretty unbelievable........

Even though his hand looks like its holding a pick he's really got a thumb pick on his hand so he doesn't have to worry bout tucking it away.
