@tigershoot No, animexfan09 is right, they have augmentors, not afterburners... it's relatively the same concept, the main difference being is the way the afterburner/augmentor section of the engine is shaped; The both provide the same thing which is extra thrust... you just have to know the engine in order to really know if it's afterburners of augmentors

To Carlos2007gt, the VC10 has 4 Conway's (22,500lbs thrust) no reheat and (RAF? BBQFaNo1) Concorde had 4 Olympus (38,050lbs thrust) with reheat. It would really surprise me to see a dB reading of both aircraft on take off and see that the VC10 was louder. Having worked with the VC10 and knowing just how loud it is, I was lucky enough to see Concorde take off from BZN followed not long after by a VC10. Concord by a long way judging by the way my internals were shaking.

Very few aircraft flying display have ever shook the ground like the B1 Lancer. The only aircraft flying demo that could actually shake the ground like it were the SR-71 Blackbird,the RAF Concorde,RAF Vulcan,and C-130 Hercules Jato close up. The F-14 Tomcat was pretty close too the same level of ground shaking.

The B 1 bomber is really loud on take-off. But the loudest jet aircraft on take-off was the North American XB-70 Valkyrie. The loudest passenger jet on take-off was the British Vickers VC10.

Yeah, this is one of, if not the loudest planes I've ever seen.

I was out in South Dakota visiting a museum with my mother.

We walked out toward the car and all the sudden I hear this earth shattering roar of I believe 4 B1's taking off in succession.

The only thing even close to the amount of noise 1 makes would be the Fat Albert RATO takeoff. The noisiest fighter is the Harrier.

@Hoshimaru57 The Hercules JATO is the loudest I can ever remember, The Vulcan and Concorde are up there with the Hercules JATO. The F-101 Voodoos and F-4 Phantoms were not as loud. The F-14 Tomcat was louder though.

It's works because there is a much wider 'catchment' area of air. The wing is much wider, so there is more air to be pushed over the wing. More air means more lift. Wikipedia has an article on swing-wing. Does not explain how it works though.

@EpicShenanigansChuck the reason the wings are back is because of the cg limit is in the middle making it easy for take off and that is where the most amount of lift is made at higher speed's they put the wings out to keep the cg limit in the middle so the plane will remain stable while in flight and at high speeds

@EpicShenanigansChuck I think the idea behind the swept wings is to reduce drag and allow the plane to travel at higher speeds. Wings forward at low speed for take off provides more lift. At high speed wings can be swept to reduce drag for higher speed. Higher speed means more lift from (or enough lift) from swept configuration. Just a guess. I remember when Jimmy Carter "canceled" the B-1 program.

Can't beleive i stood less than 50m away from one of these on a full-afterburning takeoff. The loudest noise i have ever heard, awesome. The best part was the warmth that followed, it was a freezing day. I live in Lara, less than 10 min drive from Avalon airfeild, and for the week running up to the airshow, we get this kinda stuff over our house, love it! RIP F-111

Cool. You should check out the spectacle at Miramar in San Diego California. They have practically everything there. However its rare to see things like the B-1 and B-2 flying at shows anymore. They're too busy with the war right now.

Well we're not going to see an F-35 until next year maybe. They're still rolling them off the production line. The Raptor I've seen 5 times...god its amazing! You dont hear it til its right up on you. Its manouverability is amazing (and yes its actual combat manouvers...not just acrobatics for a show) Have you ever seen a night show?

Plus the price per seat is quite common amongst business jets these days, check all the charter jet websites. they are anywhere from $1000-$5000 depending on aircraft, and are way slower than the B1 which was designed to save fuel and fly far fast!!!
