Only 67 of them left and the USAF is expected to retire them? Things are getting hot every were and lets retire them with space shuttle ? Yea , f-22 and 35 will do it all ? bullshit
@GalaticSpaceHero Problem is all these 'Cold War' jets, including the current B2 Spirit and the Russian TU160 Blackjack are all getting old. There will be a new US bomber, be assured & soon. Despite "Drone" aircraft minus pilots, it is not yet the end of manned flight
I get sick of "My willy is bigger than yours" bullshit. The B1 is designed to fulfill a role and as far as I can see it does that pretty well. It's a nice looking bird and it sure gave Saddam and his family a few moments of contemplation. Would YOU want one dropping a couple of JDAMs on your head? That's the question you should be asking!
USAF XB-70 Valkyrie had 6 × General Electric YJ93-GE-3 afterburning turbojet thrust with afterburner: 28,800 lbf. Unfortunately the military aircraft was retired too soon in February 1969. Maximum speed: Mach 3.1 (2,056 mph, 3,309 km/h)
The Russians have two military aircraft whose engines had the highest afterburning thrust ever exceeding 50,000 lbf. The max the British and Americans have are nothing higher than 4x 38,000 lbf. Although both Russian military aircraft entered service after 1980. So that means the Americans and the British had the World record first but the Soviet demand back in the 1970s were trying to engineer military aircraft that would equalize both American,British, and the West. So they weren't a myth.
@BBQFanNo1 So what was the thrust of the Black Bird? Russian startegy wasnt much about human life expectency in all there aircraft much less there gangster life styles either. At one time all the Russian women looking for husbands becuase there was shortage of males. look at alot of there weapons ,they werent ment to last very long Fly in attack if you survive great ! Not o well! Why has Russia built so many under ground bunkers? There digging bunkers as we speak.
@animexfan09 No trust me they are afterburners you don't know what you are talking about! You can clearly see when you look at the exhaust nozzles that it is dumping raw fuel and lighting it which is what an afterburner does!
@tigershoot No, animexfan09 is right, they have augmentors, not afterburners... it's relatively the same concept, the main difference being is the way the afterburner/augmentor section of the engine is shaped; The both provide the same thing which is extra thrust... you just have to know the engine in order to really know if it's afterburners of augmentors
To Carlos2007gt, the VC10 has 4 Conway's (22,500lbs thrust) no reheat and (RAF? BBQFaNo1) Concorde had 4 Olympus (38,050lbs thrust) with reheat. It would really surprise me to see a dB reading of both aircraft on take off and see that the VC10 was louder. Having worked with the VC10 and knowing just how loud it is, I was lucky enough to see Concorde take off from BZN followed not long after by a VC10. Concord by a long way judging by the way my internals were shaking.
Very few aircraft flying display have ever shook the ground like the B1 Lancer. The only aircraft flying demo that could actually shake the ground like it were the SR-71 Blackbird, the RAF Concorde,RAF Vulcan, and C-130 Hercules Jato close up. The F-14 Tomcat was pretty close too the same level of ground shaking.
The B 1 bomber is really loud on take-off. But the loudest jet aircraft on take-off was the North American XB-70 Valkyrie. The loudest passenger jet on take-off was the British Vickers VC10.
@Hoshimaru57 The Hercules JATO is the loudest I can ever remember, The Vulcan and Concorde are up there with the Hercules JATO. The F-101 Voodoos and F-4 Phantoms were not as loud. The F-14 Tomcat was louder though.
@tigershoot i dont understand how that principle works though, because the wings, swept forward or backward still have the same amount of surface area, so shouldnt it still provide equal amounts of lift both ways?
It's works because there is a much wider 'catchment' area of air. The wing is much wider, so there is more air to be pushed over the wing. More air means more lift. Wikipedia has an article on swing-wing. Does not explain how it works though.
@tigershoot aye. same amoutn of wing yes, BUT wing is at different angles/ swept allows for higher speed, but less lift/less friction. forward less speed but higher friction/drag/lift
@EpicShenanigansChuck air crossing transversal section i think, try putting the wings upside down or put them with the tip to the front of the aircraft and see how much lift it produces.
@EpicShenanigansChuck the reason the wings are back is because of the cg limit is in the middle making it easy for take off and that is where the most amount of lift is made at higher speed's they put the wings out to keep the cg limit in the middle so the plane will remain stable while in flight and at high speeds
@bob4908 what is a cg limit? either way thanks and ive looked it up and basically found out that a straight wing provides more stability and lift at low speeds. but not high speeds where a swept wing is more suitable. i just want to actualy know the scientific details that i have yet to find on this giant worldwide web lol.
@EpicShenanigansChuck I think the idea behind the swept wings is to reduce drag and allow the plane to travel at higher speeds. Wings forward at low speed for take off provides more lift. At high speed wings can be swept to reduce drag for higher speed. Higher speed means more lift from (or enough lift) from swept configuration. Just a guess. I remember when Jimmy Carter "canceled" the B-1 program.
@EpicShenanigansChuck It's not about lift, it's about drag. The leading edge is diminished in sweep mode, the plane doesn't have to push as hard against the air in front of the wing. -Probably better explanations from smarter aerophiles than me...
yeah i seen the b1-b at the edwards airforce base open house a few years back and it did a few runs and then a high speed flyby which nearly tore my ear drums out of my head and delivered them to the next town lol. this is why the afgannies have extra rags wrapped around their heads, its so they wont go deaf when they are trying to out run one of these on their camel....
Can't beleive i stood less than 50m away from one of these on a full-afterburning takeoff. The loudest noise i have ever heard, awesome. The best part was the warmth that followed, it was a freezing day. I live in Lara, less than 10 min drive from Avalon airfeild, and for the week running up to the airshow, we get this kinda stuff over our house, love it! RIP F-111
Cool. You should check out the spectacle at Miramar in San Diego California. They have practically everything there. However its rare to see things like the B-1 and B-2 flying at shows anymore. They're too busy with the war right now.

@nighthawk0077 hence 10 passengers @ $4000 each, thus making it affordable for execs who wanna go fast and far!!! This is actually lower price than most private jets currently in service!!!
@harris3693 wait, you're telling me it costs more than $40,000 to rent a 10-person private jet for 2 hours? And remember you're not allowed to go faster than Mach 1 in most places.
@nighthawk0077 well, there is the cessna Citation X which goes at Mach 1.02. Plus the price per seat is quite common amongst business jets these days, check all the charter jet websites. they are anywhere from $1000-$5000 depending on aircraft, and are way slower than the B1 which was designed to save fuel and fly far fast!!!
i was there when this took off. the last air fete i think. the only time i have seen the b52, b1 and b2 on the same runway about to take off one after another. bring back mildenhall air fete.

Yeah, this is one of, if not the loudest planes I've ever seen.
I was out in South Dakota visiting a museum with my mother.
We walked out toward the car and all the sudden I hear this earth shattering roar of I believe 4 B1's taking off in succession.
The only thing even close to the amount of noise 1 makes would be the Fat Albert RATO takeoff. The noisiest fighter is the Harrier.
