LOL...No knowledgeable boxing people said Ray couldnt handle Pryor. Again who did Aaron Pryor beat? Arguello is a former featherweight who moved up so naturally Pryor was stronger. But he barely pulled it out.
Ray is naturally 12 to 15 pounds bigger than Arguello, much faster with his hands, quicker feet, more elusive, throws more combinations. Not a stand in front of you target like Alexis.

lol...ha ha...real talk is this. Pryor barely beat a former featherweight in Alexis Arguello who was mechanical, 1-2 punch over and over and also moved up in weight.
Real talk...Pryor never beat a 147 pounder. Real talk Pryor';s wild and out of control style with poor balance is what would get him knocked out at Welterweight had he fought leonard, Hearns, Duran, Benitez.
Real talk...In Pryors only fight at 147 he was stopped by Bobby Joe Young. Dont bring up any excuses. He was only 29

True, but saying SRL ducked Pryor is not true. SRL at his peak was wiling to fight anyone. I mean fighting Duran toe to toe showed he had pride and heart after Duran insulted Rays wife before the fight.
Ray offered Pryor 500,000 but keep in mind this is before Pryor beat Alexis Arguello so he was champion, but still not well known just yet.
End of fight in the interview Pryor said Leonard offered him 500,000 and Pryor admitted he turned down. He said Leonard got 4 million, i think i deserve more than that.
So Pryor DUCKED Leonard. not SRL ducking Pryor. Ray offered the fight
It damn sure isn't when it's ten times more than what you earned previously. The only guys that made truly big money against Leonard in those days were the really big names like Hearns and Duran(and even Duran only made a fraction of what Leonard made in the first fight).
@bscottdp Bro you just put that whole issue to bed for me. I always wondered why they didn't fight. Love the Hawk but my god he made some bad decisions.
any1 ever see pryor challenging leonard at the press conference leonard was AFRAID of him he didnt want to tangle with hawktime hawk beat hearns as an ametuer he was deffinately avoided i doubt duran even wanted to fight pryor to bad he would have held his own with all those guys except hagler he was just to big for pryor
BS...Pryor did not have the style to beat Ray Leonard because he has NO DEFENSE...He takes to many punches.
Please dont compare Pryor to 1980 Duran either. Duran could apply pressure and still slip your punches. He didnt charge and take Ray's shots over and over. He could slip, make you miss coming forward and counterpunch.
Pryor...come forward...take a BOMB and keep coming
Aint working at Welterweight. Alexis was a former 130 pounders...DO YOUR HOMEWORK...People
@bscottdp I think you under estimate Pryor's defense. Pryor's style was the same as a young Mike Tyson. Very aggressive but with constant movement so the fighter is always rolling with the punches. Pryor got knocked down a lot from being off balance more than getting hit with hard punches and he had a very solid chin. I think Leonard could have pulled it out at 147 but I think Pryor would have had a damn good shot. Actually Duran v. Pryor at 135 is the fight I'd of loved to see
Pryor is like Bruce Lee. A overated myth. He would beat Leonard? Yea right. Look at his defense? Now imagine moving up 7 more pounds against a fighter with speed and power at 147? Lets keep in mind Alexis Arguello was a former featherweight and Pryor took forever to finish him late. It wasn't a early stoppage, it was a war.
Pryors style of taking punches and keep in coming...worked at 140, but he would have got knocked out at 147 using that style
@bscottdp Pryor was not a bad defensive fighter, his head movement ,reflexes and balance were brilliant .when he chose be,he was really hard to hit.he was also as tough as fuck.To jus say "hed get ko`d at welter" is ridiculous.to call him an overrated myth is even more ridiculous. He is seriously UNDERRATED.casual fans dont even know him, even though hes an all time great.that means hes underrated.
as for the "myth" tag,i dunno where you got that, his fights are there to be seen.
I didn't understand why he fought with so much reckless abandon and tenacity until I watched a special on him. Pryor tells the story that as a child his mom told him to never let someone hit you without hitting them back. He said, "OK." All of the sudden, his mom slapped him like he stole something. Aaron stood shocked. His mother then asked, "Why didn't you hit me back?"
@masterartform Yep and when Manny hangs them it'll be another 20 years before we see the 3.0 version upgrade. guys like them Harry Greb and Henry ArmStrong don't grow on trees.
Pryor fought Arguello in 1983. SRL was retired. Before then Pryor was not the man ppl wanted Ray to fight. 1980 and 1981 everyone was saying Hearns vs Leonard., Not leonard vs 140 pound unkown. Use your common sense. Why would SRL fight Hearns who was 6-1, long arms, knocking out everyone and then duck a 5-6 Pryor who was smaller? ANSWER...Your making up your garbage.
Even in this video Pryor is charging and WIDE OPEN. Only the guy he is fighting is sorry as hell
Stop lying about SRL ducking Pryor. Your making it up., Pryor's 1st big win was in 3 against Arguello. SRL was retired with the eye injury. Also the obsession with Pryor and his NO DEFENSE ass is funny as hell. That style might have worked at 140 but at 147 charging with NO DEFENSE....He would get his ass knocked out., His fundamendals are horrible. That crap worked against SLOW ASS 1 dimensional Alex Arguello who was really naturally 135 pounds.
mayweather, pacquaio, cotto, clottey, margarito, mosley, berto, bradley, alexander, khan, marquez, barrera, morales, diaz, all very great fighters, still not even on the same level as the Hawk though, wouldn't even go to round 10 with him before being KO'd.
Sad to say to the SRL haters, Hawk Time, & SRL met several times. They sparred frequently on leonards rise to the title. He said they both got their licks in against one another. Aaron was a true all time great. Hell he knocked the great Thomas Hearns out of the olympic trials. Watch the video carefully. His personal story was a sad one though. True boxing representation.
the thing that sets Pryor apart from almost all other fighters was his legitimate boxing skills. He was a badass brawler that could take any punch you could throw at him, but it was his superior skills of the sweet science that makes him one of the greatest fighters of all time. That's the real reason why SRL didn't want any part of him. SR could handle a brawler with sloppy skills, but could not handle a fighter that could brawl and also fight a disciplined fight. Aaron Pryor FTW
Forget Ortiz.......forget Tsyzu......forget Chavez.....de la Hoya......Mayweather or anybody else that passed through......this man was the best 140 pounder ever....Period.
AHHH HAHA! @ 03:08. What a rock headed mufugga! I actually fought people like that who wouldn't stay down and it was.....annoying! I'm saying to myself, "I did my job! Here he comes again..."
That was really a digg on mannys drug test dodging ass. I'm originally from Cincy, lived in Cincy for 15 years and we have P and Ezzard Charles. Cincys own, two of the greatest ever.
Pryor is a bad ass. An all time great. He beat the piss out of Arguello and Arguello was a legend. And it wasn't like Holmes-Ali. Arguello was in his prime and Pryor just beat him up.
i dont know why ther are so many aaron pryor haters he was one of the jr welter weight ever,he had a style unlike amything before or after and he beat alexis twice and arguello wasnt past his prime there is only 3 years between alexis(R.I.P) and pryor alexis was only boxing 4 yrs before pryor turned pro give the man the credit he deserves!!!
nobody will ever give him credit bcuz he was not humble like arguello and because his trainer is a fucking cheater by the name of carlos panama lewis. the trainer who took padding from boxing gloves and the trainer who gives special water bottles! lol
You can still guessing, but Alexis and Pryor was the best fight ever, and no one gave the respect and chance like Arguello did to Pryor... He was the true champion... wanted to go for the harder road... He fall like a champion... Pryor knows that, that Alexis give his big break... I just wish that they will have go all the way to see the desition...
Yes I watched HBO and aside from it, this fact was mentioned in several articles that I have read.
If you got to know everything about boxing from the boxers or their trainers good on you mate, but other people have to read articles and watch documentaries to understand things.
If you think this conclusion was incorrect you could add yours, but since you have nothing to add you should not be bothered where did the information come from.
As if Leonard never fought anyone good. Did your favorite fighter fight every single good fighter within 3 weight classes of him? In 1980, Pryor was a lightweight, Leonard a welterweight. Pryor soon moved up, but Leonard was busy fighting guys like Duran twice and Hearns. By '82, Ray was done, and a year or so later, Pryor was a coke casuality. Didn't leave a big window. I loved Pryor, but Ray did fight way tougher competition.
any one seen the punch arguello knocks kevin roony out cold with in round 1 or 2?, that same punch he landed on pryor when his head went back in the later rounds, wot a chin pryor had.
thanks to the hawk i saw his jabs how the way he flow i took out some dude on the ring that is 6 foot 4 280 and im a 165 6 ft i broke his nose and jaws
Even though Arguello was past his prime it's weird that Pryor beat him considering that Arguello was the only true fighter Pryor ever fought. The others were bums.
Pryor fought Hearns but that was the amatuers. Hey, don't get me wrong though,Pryor was one helluva fighter and was a phenom. He threw his career away to cocaine and an eye injury caused by Arguello. He was and is still one of the all-time greats because he beat Arguello and for what could have been. I'm just saying that Arguello was another dimesion of fighter he beat. It still boggles my mind.
Good call. I forgot about that one. Hey, like i said though Pryor was great, I just thought Arguello with all that experience and skill would have beat him...but he didn't. I personally think Pryor would've beaten Ray Leonard's ass though.
No elite boxer(s) in his weight class or close to his weight class wanted to box against Aaron Pryor. Arguello is the exception. Pryor beat Tommy Hearns in the 1976 Olympic Trials & 4:19 mark of this video Aaron Pryor calls out Leonard but Pryor was never given the opportunity to box against Sugar Ray. Some of the elite boxers ducked Pryor b cuz of the high risks of boxing against him. Pryor was too good & too dangerous. No one gave Pryor a chance except Arguello!
the truth is,Pryor never wanted to fight an elite opponent who was actually in their prime, cervantes and arguello were washed up and done.leonard gave pryor his offer and told him that he would be a "tune up" pryor turned it down and this was the claim that his manager made mind you.
people watch legendary nights and because they know nothing about boxing, honestly believe that Pryor was some ATG who everyone ducked
The youtube video shows Aaron Pryor calling out Sugar Ray Leonard, 4:19. If u have done your research u would have known that. I am not guaranteeing Pryor would beat Leonard but ,at the time, Pryor was 2 risky 2 box against. During the 70's & early 80's Pryor had everything 2 gain & nothinig 2 lose. While Leonard had everything 2 lose & nothing 2 gain. Alexis Arguello was not past his prime when he fought Pryor. He was n his early 30's. Show me proof Pryor ducked elite boxers n his prime!
The video shows Aaron Pryor looking to gain some spotlight while sharing a platform with a man who at the time was the biggest star in boxing.
Now if Aaron Pryor was actually a factor at 147 or could draw the type of gate and crowd to demand a shot with Leonard then fair enough but up until Arguello, nobody knew who Pryor was and he had never even fought at 147.
Arguello most certainly was past his prime when Pryor caught up with him as Pryor never beat an elite fighter in his prime
Aaron Pryor did call out Ray Leonard! Do your research! I did mention b 4 that Pryor was 2 risky 4 Leonard. Pryor had everything 2 gain while Leonard had everything 2 lose. Eventhough Pryor was not a household name does not mean he couldn't beat Leonard. One way a boxer can become a household name is boxing against someone who is a household name. Arguello was the only & brave household named boxer 2 give Pryor a chance 2 become a household named boxer.
Pryor was never in a position to face Leonard,Pryor calling out leonard is the equivalent of Timothy bradley calling out floyd Mayweather(and bradley is way better than pryor ever was)
you so some research rather than watching legendary nights.
as for pryor beating Ray Leonard,go watch dujuan johnson vs Aaaron Pryor and then come back to me.
Pryor is overrated and a b level fighter who never had the balls to fight a top fighter in his prime
I never guaranteed Pryor can beat Leonard. Read the comment I replied 2 u from 3 or 4 days ago. Pryor beat Johnson by tko. The reason Johnson gave Pryor a tough boxing match was b cuz Pryor underestimated him. I am not guaranteeing Pryor would have beaten the elite 147lbs boxers of that time but no elite boxer gave him the opportunity after he defeated Arguello x 2. NO UNKNOWN BOXER CAN BECOME A "BIG NAME" OR HOUSEHOLD NAME IF THE "BIG NAME" BOXERS DOES NOT GIVE HIM A CHANCE!
anybody can call out a fighter does not mean he would win ! riddick bowe called out lennox lewis but when it come down to it bowe chucked his belt in the dustbin rather than fight lewis lol sugar was the elite of all the fighters at that time so of course pryor would want to fight him ! but let me tell you one thing sugar ray was not the b level fighters who pryor fought ! leonard would have took him to school and laid him out for sure ! duran would have ripped out pryors liver and eat it !!
No one will know if Aaron Pryor would beat Sugar Ray Leonard or any elite 147lbs boxers of that time. Sugar Ray Leonard never gave Aaron Pryor a chance 2 box against him. The bigger name or more successful boxer does not guarantee 2 beat a smaller name or less accomplish boxer. Styles make fights. PROBABLY, Aaron Pryor had the style 2 beat Ray Leonard. No one knows 4 sure.
@lovethick no way in hell Pryor could of beaten Leonard! everyone talks all that crap because he beat by decision a young 17yr old inexperienced Tommy in the amateurs. Could you imagine what Hearns would of done to him in the pro's?
@judaschongo No one knows who would win n a professional boxing match: Aaron Pryor vs Ray Leonard nor Tommy Hearns vs Aaron Pryor. The reason no person knows who will win b cuz Pryor was never given a opportunity 2 box against Leonard & Hearns n a professional boxing match.
@lovethick are you that seriously that delusional? wasn't given a chance? LOL! Pryor didn't give himself a chance! that man never risked anything, opting to play it safe by staying in that bullshit 140 jr/super division. Not even 1 of the original 8 weight divisions for crying out loud. Your "never given a chance" is laughable! what do you do when no one gives you a chance? you move up in weight & make yourself noticed. Did Aaron ever do that? NO!
@judaschongo "Make yourself noticed"? LOL! After Aaron Pryor defeated Alexis Arguello x 2, his name was known in the boxing world n the 1980s. Pryor did not need 2 gain recognition b cuz he earned it after those 2 big wins. Pryor vs Leonard or Pryor vs Hearns would have good 4 boxing during the 1980s b cuz hardcore & mainstream boxing fans knew who Pryor was at that time.
@lovethick I realize fans or analysts knew who he was due to those 2 wins. Seriously think about that comment though; defeating a 30yr old former Featherweight Great twice? Don't you think that instead of asking or throwing out supposed challenges he could of made an attempt at moving up 7lbs? Duran leapfrogged that entire bullshit division & gained 12lbs to challenge Leonard, the best of his generation at Welter.
@judaschongo There was no guarantee Pryor & Leonard nor Pryor & Hearns would have fought each other @ 147lbs weight limit. Maybe, they did not agree with the terms on the contract 2 box each other.
@judaschongo Y did u say the jr. welterweight division was a "bullshit" division n the 1980s? Aaron Pryor was inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame by competing n the "bullshit" weight class! Obviously, the boxing experts DID NOT think Pryor had a bullshit career by boxing n a bullshit weight class!
@lovethick look that was a harsh indictment I I know but the point I'm making is: the 140 division is NOT even 1 of the original 8. His opposition aside from Arguello & Cervantes is dubious considering the plethora of talent that was all around him. My point is he knew exactly where he belonged, and that was at 140, away from the "other" Greats.
SRL was too big and too slick of a boxer, Even though Hearns lost to him in the amateurs, Hearns had developed already as a A-class fighter not to mention his size. Duran on the otherhand I don't know who would win that.
2 examples of household named boxers giving little or unknown boxers a chance: F. Trinidad vs B. Hopkins & S. Mosley vs V. Forrest. If S. Mosley never fought V. Forrest, V. Forrest probably would not have a chance 2 have a recognizable name. The same 4 B. Hopkins. After B. Hopkins defeated F. Trinidad & V. Forrest beat S. Mosley, both Hopkins & Forrest became "BIG NAME" boxers and was able 2 draw a bigger crowd more than they were able 2 b 4 the beat "BIG NAME" boxers.
Best 140 pounder of all time in my opinion. All action had amazing heart, and superior stamina and most important BALLS. Sugar Ray Leonard was a big pussy when aaron called him out after SRL had won a fight. SRL would of taken an ass beating thats why he wanted nothing with the hawk. Arguello could of gone up to 147 pounds imo if aaron had not beaten him. This man was born for war.
@elwichito don't buy into that calling out bullshit on the part of Aaron? that's why Leonard went on to bigger & better things; and what did Pryor do? wasted his time in that jr/super division of 140. Not even 1 of the original 8 weight divisions. Making a name fighting and old Cervantes and getting knocked down in the process. Then fighting an over the hill blown up Featherweight in Arguello.
Pryor along with Chavez & Gomez are among the most overrated!
@elwichito HAY QUE SER CONCIENTES..PRYOR HA SIDO MEJOR WALTER JUNIOR DE TODA LA HISTORIA..GRAN BOXEADOR..PEGADA..AGIL,,ESQUIVABA GOLPES..NUNCA SE LE COMPROBO NADA..AHORA..YO TENGO DUDAS COMO GANO LA 1.era.PELEA CONTRA ARGUELLO..SI USTED ANALIZA EN 14 ROUND DE BOXEO AMBOS BOXEADORES ESTAN AGOTADOS Y PRYOR CREO ESTABA DROGADO...ERA BUEN BOXEADOR PERO PARECE QUE VARIOS COMBATES LOS HACIA BAJO EFECTOS DE LA DROGA....LA DUDA SIEMPRE QUEDARA
Sugar Ray wouldn't have been able to dance around the Ring with Pryor coming at him non-stop. He had encridible stamina that never seemed to diminish.
Aaron Pryor arguably one of the greatest action fighters of all time. Arguello was an awesome gentleman master boxer who showed his balls by taking on Pryor and lost twice, leonard and hearns both wanted no piece of pryor - beleive that!
yes SRL duck him in an interview SRL said iam not going to fight Aaron Pryor.
SRL cause AP an animal when Alexiis hit Pryor with a straight right hand and Pryor kept on going. I guess the Pryor had taken that punch SRL said no way man I going to fight this animal
man... you wanna see how a short fighter should fight a tall fighter?? go watch aaron pryor's fights.... he knew how to close the distance against the jabbers with longer arms.. .case in point Tommy Hearns and Alexis Arguello
Pryor was like a computer game character come to life, phenomenal. Pacquiao is the closest anyone has come to him since, but i don't think Manny has Pryors inhuman ability to absorb a shot.
Yeah. To beat someone like Thomas Hearns you'd have to have a pretty good chin I think :). I know it was an amateur fight, but still there aren't many (if any) light welterweights who could have beat Pryor in his prime.
except there are no similarities in style and they aint really built the same eighter. mosley is a lot more muscular and has a way longer reach. learn your boxing before u make statements
Pryor would've overwhelmed Pacquiao. Pryor could box and punch. He was a strong dude too. And can you imagine Manny Pacquiao beating a young Tommy Hearns? Pryor did.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Pryor can't box. And amateurs mean nothing. Pryor fought NOBODY except past prime, out of his best weight class Arguello, and old Cervantes. Most overrated fighter ever.
anybody who knows boxing knws pryor was that deal! only one loss via cocaine, destroyed hearns and alexis, respect his talent salutr

Only the guy he is fighting is sorry as hell
bscottdp 1 year ago 2
Stop lying about SRL ducking Pryor. Your making it up., Pryor's 1st big win was in 3 against Arguello. SRL was retired with the eye injury. Also the obsession with Pryor and his NO DEFENSE ass is funny as hell. That style might have worked at 140 but at 147 charging with NO DEFENSE....He would get his ass knocked out., His fundamendals are horrible. That crap worked against SLOW ASS 1 dimensional Alex Arguello who was really naturally 135 pounds.

Cheers.

No one gave Pryor a chance except Arguello!
lovethick 2 years ago
I agree with everything you said. It's a shame his career didn't go any further.
TheChoice264 2 years ago 2
the truth is,Pryor never wanted to fight an elite opponent who was actually in their prime, cervantes and arguello were washed up and done.leonard gave pryor his offer and told him that he would be a "tune up" pryor turned it down and this was the claim that his manager made mind you.
people watch legendary nights and because they know nothing about boxing, honestly believe that Pryor was some ATG who everyone ducked
ain't true,pryor just wasn't that good
MrPalspal 2 years ago
The youtube video shows Aaron Pryor calling out Sugar Ray Leonard, 4:19. If u have done your research u would have known that. I am not guaranteeing Pryor would beat Leonard but ,at the time, Pryor was 2 risky 2 box against. During the 70's & early 80's Pryor had everything 2 gain & nothinig 2 lose. While Leonard had everything 2 lose & nothing 2 gain. Alexis Arguello was not past his prime when he fought Pryor. He was n his early 30's. Show me proof Pryor ducked elite boxers n his prime!
lovethick 2 years ago
The video shows Aaron Pryor looking to gain some spotlight while sharing a platform with a man who at the time was the biggest star in boxing.
Now if Aaron Pryor was actually a factor at 147 or could draw the type of gate and crowd to demand a shot with Leonard then fair enough but up until Arguello, nobody knew who Pryor was and he had never even fought at 147.
Arguello most certainly was past his prime when Pryor caught up with him as Pryor never beat an elite fighter in his prime
MrPalspal 2 years ago
Aaron Pryor did call out Ray Leonard! Do your research! I did mention b 4 that Pryor was 2 risky 4 Leonard. Pryor had everything 2 gain while Leonard had everything 2 lose. Eventhough Pryor was not a household name does not mean he couldn't beat Leonard. One way a boxer can become a household name is boxing against someone who is a household name. Arguello was the only & brave household named boxer 2 give Pryor a chance 2 become a household named boxer.
lovethick 2 years ago
you ain't making any damn sense
Pryor was never in a position to face Leonard,Pryor calling out leonard is the equivalent of Timothy bradley calling out floyd Mayweather(and bradley is way better than pryor ever was)
you so some research rather than watching legendary nights.
as for pryor beating Ray Leonard,go watch dujuan johnson vs Aaaron Pryor and then come back to me.
Pryor is overrated and a b level fighter who never had the balls to fight a top fighter in his prime
MrPalspal 2 years ago
I never guaranteed Pryor can beat Leonard. Read the comment I replied 2 u from 3 or 4 days ago. Pryor beat Johnson by tko. The reason Johnson gave Pryor a tough boxing match was b cuz Pryor underestimated him. I am not guaranteeing Pryor would have beaten the elite 147lbs boxers of that time but no elite boxer gave him the opportunity after he defeated Arguello x 2. NO UNKNOWN BOXER CAN BECOME A "BIG NAME" OR HOUSEHOLD NAME IF THE "BIG NAME" BOXERS DOES NOT GIVE HIM A CHANCE!
lovethick 2 years ago
anybody can call out a fighter does not mean he would win ! riddick bowe called out lennox lewis but when it come down to it bowe chucked his belt in the dustbin rather than fight lewis lol sugar was the elite of all the fighters at that time so of course pryor would want to fight him ! but let me tell you one thing sugar ray was not the b level fighters who pryor fought ! leonard would have took him to school and laid him out for sure ! duran would have ripped out pryors liver and eat it !!
sweetassugar69 2 years ago
No one will know if Aaron Pryor would beat Sugar Ray Leonard or any elite 147lbs boxers of that time. Sugar Ray Leonard never gave Aaron Pryor a chance 2 box against him. The bigger name or more successful boxer does not guarantee 2 beat a smaller name or less accomplish boxer. Styles make fights. PROBABLY, Aaron Pryor had the style 2 beat Ray Leonard. No one knows 4 sure.
lovethick 2 years ago 17
@lovethick no way in hell Pryor could of beaten Leonard! everyone talks all that crap because he beat by decision a young 17yr old inexperienced Tommy in the amateurs. Could you imagine what Hearns would of done to him in the pro's?
judaschongo 1 year ago
@judaschongo No one knows who would win n a professional boxing match: Aaron Pryor vs Ray Leonard nor Tommy Hearns vs Aaron Pryor. The reason no person knows who will win b cuz Pryor was never given a opportunity 2 box against Leonard & Hearns n a professional boxing match.
lovethick 1 year ago
@lovethick are you that seriously that delusional? wasn't given a chance? LOL! Pryor didn't give himself a chance! that man never risked anything, opting to play it safe by staying in that bullshit 140 jr/super division. Not even 1 of the original 8 weight divisions for crying out loud. Your "never given a chance" is laughable! what do you do when no one gives you a chance? you move up in weight & make yourself noticed. Did Aaron ever do that? NO!
never given a chance? LOL! I'm still reeling!
judaschongo 1 year ago
@judaschongo "Make yourself noticed"? LOL! After Aaron Pryor defeated Alexis Arguello x 2, his name was known in the boxing world n the 1980s. Pryor did not need 2 gain recognition b cuz he earned it after those 2 big wins. Pryor vs Leonard or Pryor vs Hearns would have good 4 boxing during the 1980s b cuz hardcore & mainstream boxing fans knew who Pryor was at that time.
lovethick 1 year ago
@lovethick I realize fans or analysts knew who he was due to those 2 wins. Seriously think about that comment though; defeating a 30yr old former Featherweight Great twice? Don't you think that instead of asking or throwing out supposed challenges he could of made an attempt at moving up 7lbs? Duran leapfrogged that entire bullshit division & gained 12lbs to challenge Leonard, the best of his generation at Welter.
judaschongo 1 year ago
@judaschongo There was no guarantee Pryor & Leonard nor Pryor & Hearns would have fought each other @ 147lbs weight limit. Maybe, they did not agree with the terms on the contract 2 box each other.
lovethick 1 year ago
@judaschongo Y did u say the jr. welterweight division was a "bullshit" division n the 1980s? Aaron Pryor was inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame by competing n the "bullshit" weight class! Obviously, the boxing experts DID NOT think Pryor had a bullshit career by boxing n a bullshit weight class!
lovethick 1 year ago
@lovethick look that was a harsh indictment I I know but the point I'm making is: the 140 division is NOT even 1 of the original 8. His opposition aside from Arguello & Cervantes is dubious considering the plethora of talent that was all around him. My point is he knew exactly where he belonged, and that was at 140, away from the "other" Greats.

SRL was too big and too slick of a boxer, Even though Hearns lost to him in the amateurs, Hearns had developed already as a A-class fighter not to mention his size. Duran on the otherhand I don't know who would win that.
Rasclot222 1 year ago
2 examples of household named boxers giving little or unknown boxers a chance: F. Trinidad vs B. Hopkins & S. Mosley vs V. Forrest. If S. Mosley never fought V. Forrest, V. Forrest probably would not have a chance 2 have a recognizable name. The same 4 B. Hopkins. After B. Hopkins defeated F. Trinidad & V. Forrest beat S. Mosley, both Hopkins & Forrest became "BIG NAME" boxers and was able 2 draw a bigger crowd more than they were able 2 b 4 the beat "BIG NAME" boxers.
lovethick 2 years ago 2
If Pryor was given more opportunities 2 fight "BIG NAME" boxers & IF he would have beaten them, U probably would never say Pryor was overrated.
