  • Osaka dialect and American Southern accent seems to be the best pick for an English dub on Osaka-chan.

  • Osaka+Eng dub=Jeff Foxworthy???

  • @HaseoDG She sounds like "Jeff Foxworthy" because when the research was done into an accent that would be comparable in America, it was determined that the closest city would be Houston, Texas, thus the country accent. BTW, there was another anime that did the same thing (Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi). FYI: Jeff is from Shreveport, LA. As to the english dub, it's great! I've watched both languages, it's fine!

  • @duchovny2 The voice actress for Osaka is also the VA for Arumi, the female main character in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.

  • English or Japanese, I love Osaka's voice. It's really cute <3 !

  • @Dark2294 You're absolutely right. Whether in Japanese or English, Ayumu aka "Osaka" will always be adorable.

  • Osaka is a redneck?

  • I like the dub but... I just can't help but hate Osaka's voice.

  • @meatjo9 At first, I didn't think Osaka's English voice was that good either. But overtime I've actually gotten used to it. Actually, I think her Southern accent fits her slow and spacey personality.

  • Love thus<3

  • @mgs3re4dmc3 what? i think your just butthurt that you dont have the brain capacity to focus on both at the same time.

  • @boethiah12 I think you're just butthurt to accept the truth of what I say :P

  • @mgs3re4dmc3 not one bit. it does help a little that i can understand a bit of what they are saying so i dont have to read every line.

  • @boethiah12 That's fine if you wanna do that. I however would prefer to be fully fluent in the language they are speaking so I don't have to read subs. Subs tend to block part of the action and I can't see what's behind them. So I turn them off and use my ears to the fullest extent and enjoy the anime ;)

  • @mgs3re4dmc3 that is understandable. i just prefer subs. but whatever.

  • @boethiah12 Actually, I sometimes even watch anime in Tagalog (my native Filipino language). Not just in English. It's cool to see how it sounds in different languages as long as I can understand them.

  • @mgs3re4dmc3 they have anime in tagalog? i never knew that. thats actually kinda cool.

  • @boethiah12 I do remember watching Dragonball Z in Tagalog when I lived in the Philippines. I also saw an Azumanga Daioh trailer in Tagalog but I can't watch the whole thing here in the U.S. due to copyright. Oh well...

  • @mgs3re4dmc3 thats really dissapointing.

  • @boethiah12 Yeah. Hey, you seem to be open about the whole anime in Tagalog thing. I was afraid you'd be a total dub hater.

I take back what I said about people who prefer subs. I meant that for the total dub haters who don't care one bit about anime in other languages. I'm glad you're open about anime being in Tagalog. Sorry for any mix up.

  • @mgs3re4dmc3 dont worry about it. im just glad it didnt turn into a total flamefest. lol.

  • @mgs3re4dmc3 also i take back what i said too. you seem like a decent guy from what ive heard from you. so yeah.

  • She reminds me of what Forrest Gump would of been like if the movie shown more parts of him in class....but a girl version of course lol.

  • Osaka is the equivalent of America's southern states, thats why the accent. They were just trying to show the culture differences between Osaka and Tokyo and etc.. :)

  • @Thamer4life actually there's a lot more of these types of videos in subbed form rather than dub. I know this because if I type in 'osaka azumanga daioh' almost every video I look at is sub (which sucks because I'm one of the few who actually like the dub). So there's no use complaining about the one video that's dubbed when most of the other videos are subbed.

  • If you don't like the dub, don't watch it. True.

    BUT!

This video's title AND description say nothing about whether this scene is subbed or dubbed. Therefore, the anticipating watchers are struck with disappointment when they find out it's a lousy dub and not what they were looking for; the original.

Therefore, they have EVERY fucking right to express how much they hate the dub here, where it doesn't say that this is a dub and thus cannot avoid falling into the trap.

    *bows* I rest my case.

  • i love the accent ^_^

  • she reminds me of forrest gump xDDD

  • I'm spacey like Osaka... :p

  • @TheCreativeDreamer keep dreaming. you are probably more like kimura

  • @TheCreativeDreamer ah am ayumu kasuga!

  • SPY'S SAPPIN' MAH OSAKA

  • i mean the dub... oh dude.. i am sooo sorry very sorry.. but the dub... ähhhmm yes.. its quite ok but not good!

  • Osaka=me

    OxO

  • i had no clue osaka was from arizona.

  • @Ichigo9913 what are you talking about??

r u sayin folks at az are slow and spacey???

  • is the soap farting?

  • chiyo - good

    yomi - awful

    osaka - ok

    tomo - ok

  • Osaka's Japanese voice is cuter.

  • i like how country she sounds.

oh and 1:53 dont drop the soap >.< ~~RAEP!!!!

  • If u hate dubs don't watch it if u like watching non ones where u have to read subtitles and lose like a part of the picture and miss it while reading it hurts ur head a little. Anyway i like Osaka's voice cuz it makes her more spacey

  • Comment removed

  • THIZ DUB IZ CRAP :/

  • @Xipez

I hope your not serious -_-

    If you are

If its crap dont watch it

  • Shes my favorite character... By the way, whats the name of the background music playing in the background part when shes wondering whether shes spacey or not?

And... Shota? doesn't that sound a little.... ?

  • I don't usually like anime in english dub in general, but this one's not good at all, and it's hard to find the jap version. Chiyo's voice isn't that bad. But everyone else. Almost unbearable

  • Osaka isn't very good at first but she gets alot better around episode 8.

  • hey please respond DigiHatesMakingNames can you uplode the part where osaka is first introduced in english please

  • WAHAHAHAHA, the one who hired these voice actors should get fired xD along with the voice actors

  • This is like.. fandub quality. And I don't mean the video itself.

  • .

No, it's way below fandub quality.

Osaka would agree, and if she was real she'd murder the official dub voice actresses with a sledgehammer or stab them repeatedly, for ruining her voice.

To see what I mean, watch:

    watch?v=7sl92IB0r1k&fmt=35

    .

  • i'm soo glad that she does that too with those bubbles. Makes me feel normal....wait....ok now i know i need to go to a mental hospital.

    Ohhhhhh.....i wish i wher a bird!

  • @jaws900 Not a bird. I'm a cat. If I'm not a cat, what am I?

  • shes so hot....

  • Heheh... the accent.

It's like Gone with the Wind.

  • I din't know why but this reminds me of Charlie Brown

  • This is gonna sound so crazy, but I think Osaka's accent is so damn sexy! I always was a sucker for girls with southern accents.

  • ya pick that soap up bitch let me see that ass lol im jokeing 1:54

  • why does it sound like Osaka has a southern accent?

  • because in japan osaka would be conserd southern country so i guess there try to make it like Texas

  • cuz she does

  • Because she's from Osaka. Japanese people have accents too.

  • ひどいな、この声

    大阪は関西弁でおっとりした声だから可愛いんだ、これは萌えの欠片もない!

Japanese dub and Eng sub is best!

    Eng dub is not Moe.

  • The "eye bubble" part is funnier the second time because now you know what she's doing. Wow, this show's amazing.

  • só por ser da vossa linguagem não quer dizer que seja uma voz linda -.-

está horrível a voz ok? a japonesa é melhor.

  • concordo 100%

  • Actually, southern dialect might be the best they could have picked. Kansai dialect is known in the rest of Japan as pretty rowdy.

  • It might have been the most accurate but that doesn't make it sound good ;)

  • If they wanted rowdy couldnt they have just used an iresh accent? I dont know how many people feel that a southren accent cute as they do feel dirty

  • Sheesh all of you, cry some more about the dub will you? The dub is just fine.

  • @pooyuy Yeah its been a year since you posted this, and I'm pretty much necroposting now but ask me if I care.

Dub is fine? Wrong. I hate dubs for 3 reasons; They lose a lot in the translation, most of the English voice actors suck especially when they choose the wrong accents and styles for the wrong characters, and because it always seems to take away from the original intent. In the sub-dub war, I'm pro sub.

IMO they totally screwed up the voices here. Osaka as a southern bell? Really?

  • 2:39 shes triping

  • omg they ruined osaka with that voice :(

  • that voice for her is perfect

  • I usually watch the dubs when i need some background noise and i actually want to follow the story.

I do notice the Azumanga Daioh's and Lucky Star's dubs are better than most...

  • I love that they chose a southern accent. I get that they're trying to represent the differing accents, but jeez. It just sounds weird.

Yomi sounds about right, though, thankfully.

  • Guys, it's just an anime. It's a matter of opinion. If you don't like the dub, then don't watch it. More importantly, don't whine about how "THIZ DUB IZ CRAP" or whatever, because some people frankly don't care and just want to watch the damn video. Not everyone has to love/hate the dub or the world's going to explode. Just enjoy the show in whatever language you like and leave it at that. Thank you.

  • @Xelorei but the engdub suxx rly hard. more importantly, blah blah blah

  • @Xelorei If you're so worried about what people have to say about a crappy English dub then and say just enjoy it then why are you paying attention to comments? <3

  • I think they gave her a southern accent because she's supposed to have an accent from living in Osaka.

  • A dub?! Wtf? What kind of stupid person watches dubbed anime? Hahaha . lamest ever

  • "you know those tiny bubbles inside your eyes you sometimes catch, yea, i'm tracking them down as we speak."

    lmao!!!

  • Ah, the dub wars. You know, that the reason why the japanese dub sounds better is that all japanese voice actors are typecast, meaning that irregardless of the Anime, certain character setups all sound alike.

In many ways, Japanese characters are all cliches, right down to their voices. As for Azumanga Daioh, I see no difference between the two languages, am impressed at the actual translation, and a fan of the Texan Osaka, since I have a southern accent and am like Osaka, y'all.

  • OSAKA HAS A SOUTHERN ACCENT IN THE JAPANESE DUB BECAUSE SHES FROM SOUTHERN JAPAN.

THEREFORE SHE HAS A SOUTHERN AMERICAN ACCENT IN THE ENGLISH DUB.

    stfu. fools.

I also think the japanese version sounds better.

But quit bashing! There's nothing that wrong with this.

  • Osaka really reminds me of Wendy from The Shining for some reason...

  • Only fags like dubbed anime.

  • You're not very bright, are you?

There are quite a few good dubs out there.

  • But this isn't one of them.

There are extremely few good dubs out for anime.

  • unless you speak japanese, then you really can't make a rational judgement of whether a japanese dub is good quality.

  • You don't have to understand a fucking language to tell if some one sounds better than another person.

  • what are you? 5? you dont have to be able to speak another language just hear if the persons who does the voices does a better job. idiot.

  • Please be quiet weeaboo, this is one of the few animes I like and I don't want people who think japan is God but don't know a thing about it ruining it.

  • Don't care about japan, but are you fucking serious about her English voice being better? I will be the first to say that there are anime that the English voices do an even better job than the Japanese voice actors, but this is not one of those at all. How does it make me a weaboo if I can simply point out that one voice is simply better than another?

  • *sigh* I'm sorry, I just saw a rant on how people complain about dubs for the wrong reasons. I personally think her english voice is better, so yes. I am serious. Besides, its pretty logical, osakas from the south. So she might aswell have some southern accent.

  • Meh, I guess everyone has different taste.

  • Of course.

  • Now, tell me.

How does watching an english version over a version where I need to pause to see what they are saying make me "lame" or any lesser than you?

It is my humble opinion, you don't see me critizizing your opinion, so why bash mine hmm?

Besides, In the 4 weeks after my comment was made, i got bored of anime, yes. Along to kirby mouse attack I go!

No please kindly stop laughing and mentally get off my back.

  • my little sister who is 5 watches dubbed anime. ive never met anyone else. (They censor all the cultural references, failing to explain them with subtitles. They also mess up the dialogue to remove all the idiomatic phrases that make Japanese unique. just making it... so goddam lame.)

  • Could you stop telling people to not watch dubs already? Azumanga daiohs dub has the sans and chans and samas in it while haruhis dub has all the kanji in it.

Besides, IF WE WANT TO WATCH DUBS WE WILL.

  • What are you talking about now? Azumanga dub has chans.. and Haruhis has kanjis? What does that even mean? Are you trying to make a point?

Im just trying to help you. Even you guys must grow up sometime and understand this.

  • If you watched anime, you would know what they are.

For example. In the video, instead of saying "thats chiyo" dub yomi says "thats chiyo-chan" and " osaka-san.

Kanji is the common name for japanese writing, I watched all the dub haruhi episodes and there were many instances were there was kan and a little note telling you what it meant.

How exactly s nsulting us for liking something help? Just because you're 6 year-old ousin watches dubs does not mean that mature people watch dubs to.

  • hah. "If you watched anime, you would know what they are." my gf is japanese and i work everyday with japanese = im fluent.

it wasnt the words i didnt understand. it was their connection to what we were talking about. and i still dont understand your reason as to why you said it. of course they say chiyoCHAN. it would be a lousy dub if they didnt. and as to haruhi... got kanjis? are you talking about dubs now? then there is not subtitles with kanjis in them.

  • So, you mean that if the english dub did not have the stuff like "-chan" It would automatically make it bad?

And there is subtitles for haruhis japanese letters, which is what kanji is.

Every time I watch an episode(dubbed, mind you) I see japanese letters, to keep the point that they are in Japan, they understand it.

But, not all of us understand it, and I see green letters saying the translation. You'll see it if ou look up haruhis dub on here.

  • well. maybe not bad. but only for stupid people. and kids who cant understand better. anyone else surely want the right translations and the right feeling from the anime.

  • Well, basically. People can enjoy dubs, its just what they want to watch. THeir opinion.

  • If you mean they change the jokes then it makes sense. I'm not from Japan so I'm not an expert on their humor. Dubs are good. And it's much more comfortable to hear something in your own language. There was nothing wrong with the dub. Besides the southern accent which I quickly got use to.

  • And it seems like you're just describing 4Kinds. Because that rarely happens anymore.

  • in the case of azumanga daioh, osaka loses most of what makes her funny without her original voice actress.

a lot of things get lost in a localization and some of us would rather not lose those things.

  • wow english dubbed version sux shit!!!!!!!!

    horrible horrible voice acting...

  • I think I'm in love.

  • i really can't stand the dubbed version T_T

  • 2:07 haha osaka seems so randomin some of the videos.thats what makes osaka a good charactor.

  • oh gosh osaka rulzs but no the inglish dub its not moe or something cute at all ~ the voice in japanese of osaka is very cute and match the personality xD

  • i can't watch this english dub.. the voices just sounds like older women trying to sound like young girls. japanese version fits them better imo

  • ..... that's cuz it always is an older woman playing a younger girl, moron.

It's the same thing with Japanese voice actresses only they do some weird shit to their voices. Have you ever actually listened to a young Japanese girl talk, they don't sound as high pitched as you normally see.

  • Wow, guess I struck a nerve there.

  • He's right though. And this is actually a pretty good dub.

  • Opinions.

There's no way you could convince me the English dub is better here.

  • When did I ever say it was better? I just said it was a pretty good dub....man, you weaboos need to watch the Azumanga Daioh dub defense rant in the related videos thing.

  • I still dont get why shes Texan.

  • They just tried to give her an American southern accent, since in the original, she had a Japanese southern accent. They're completely different accents, I'm sure, but that's the closest they can get to the original in a dub.

  • plus, Osaka is perpetualy considered the Japanese equivelant to Texas, since most of Japan views Osaka's people as being strange, backwater hicks.

  • If ya hate dubs, don't watch it. If you do like 'em, freaking watch it. No one should force eachother to watch subbed versions.

  • dude the reason people don't watch dubs is because of the voice actors who record the dubs. I mean just look at the characters and listen to the voices

"TOKYO-folks do the RIIGHT THANG and stop when the light's RHED"

There is now way, man no way, you can listen to that voice and imagine the oriental eight year old you see on the screen

  • its because shes from Osaka, a southern part of japan, so in the original dub she had a different accent than the other girls, so they tried the same thing in the dub, used a southern accent for her

  • i like SOME dubs. in some cases i even PREFER the dubs. for example i thought the trigun, fma, pokemon (the first couple seasons, not the recent ones), digimon, dbz, fumoffu, golden boy dubs were okay among others

dont really like these azumanga dubs though :[

  • I really don't get why people watch dubbed versions... o.O

Here're some (un-biased) reasons why subbed (or raw) is better than dubs (I watched eps 5 raw 'cause they put ep.4's subs in it -.-)

    * The lip sync will not be off

    * the voices will match the reactions seen in the animation, without the sentence sounding awkward or altering the sentence

    * Names, words and expressions are not misprenounced

    * the puns remain intect (and mostly explained)

    * you don't have to wait for a dub. (fansubs)

  • Look... alot of ppl watch dubs because they dont like reading along with the show, spending time and effort reading instead of actually looking at whats going on in the show. Plus some ppl read slower than others, making it hard to watch subs because they have to rewind to see what they've missed when a long sentence comes up but is said quickly in Japanese. And on top of that, doing any other task while watching a subbed anything is nearly impossible, because u cant look away from the screen.

  • point taken, but your argument is based on people not being able to read quickly enough and/or not understanding what's being said.

Out of experience I can tell that 8 years of watching subbed anime makes you more or less understand what they say, even if you don't see the screen (although I can't see why you'd want to look away...).

But I suppose some people don't want that, and that's fine. There will always be a market for dubs, but I think any dubbed media should expicitly say that it is.

  • Just like subs should say what language they are in prior to watching.

    Just like this video.

While I don't mind people watching dubs, I'd still like to see a note about it being dubbed in the title (ex. "azumanga daioh anime - Osaka (eng dub)") just like I (and I presume most people) would like there to be a remark about foreign subs/dubs on anime.

The reason it should be explicitly pointed out is because it is not the norm, and it is an alteration of the original content.

  • oh, and before people point it out:

I don't think a sub is as much an alteration as it is an extension, so to speak, of the original content. You can just ignore the subs and the original is there, unlike a dub.

  • I grew up with dubs. I only watch subs when the voices are very very crappy, or if it's not released in America and I wanna freakin watch it right now. So I watch Dubs cause I don't like reading and I grew up with it. I did hate the English Dub of the first 10 episodes of Zeta Gundam.

  • Actually, the lip sync has a higher chance of not being off on the dub. The Japanese studios often don't put too much focus on actually matching up the audio to the lip movement percisely, whereas American companies seem to feel that this is important to do.

And of course, in some cases, the dub is just better (I can't even watch Cowboy Bebop subbed. It doesn't feel right at all).

  • While that might be true in a lot of cases, it would often mean distorting the sentences very much to accomplish a sentence of approximately the same length. While some cases, say "*insert name* desu" would probably look better in the english lip sync "I'm **" other cases like, say, "wakaru?" (ex. someone said something to someone, who did not reply/respond correctly) would be "do you understand (me)?" and not just "understand?" (in our specific case). And even that sounds a bit awkward (imo).

  • Also, and this might be 'cause I'm not a native english speaker, I find it unconfortable watching something that has been dubbed into english (not just from japanese). It just doesn't fit (somehow).

But it might also be that I'm just not a dub-person, 'cause I feel unconfortable seeing Swedish dubs, Finnish dubs, Japanese dubs and Spannish dubs as well... =/

It might be a question of growing up with subs contra growing up with dubs.

All TV here is subbed, whereas many countries dub...

  • Holy shit no one likes dubs?

  • I LOVE Osaka! lol she's so funny in the book! Though I do perfer her Japanese voice better too.

  • I hate dubs. If you ever watch an anime in Japanese with subs, you will never ever watch dubs again.

  • Not true. I've watched an anime in Japanese with subs, then I watched the same anime in English.

  • What do you have against dubs?

  • Same here!

  • Amen to that. dups are so anoying

  • Osaka sounds a lot more in character in the Japanese dub. There's a lot more of a vacant tone in her voice, like she's really trying to keep her head in the real world. The English dub is a fair effort but I don't think anything could nail it down any more than the original. Just another thing that got lost in translation... Which in my opinion, the anime never should have been. The jokes lose their sparkle and the characters lose their real personality. Still... If you can't read... Lol.

  • Indeed.

Dubs suck ass and they are totally useless.

  • i hate her american voice... actually, the english version is... anime/manga should be in japanese... baka desu...

  • Yeah, indeed. You should say in title if its in English to avoid rage and brain damage.

  • She so adorable, I wish I had her as a pet.

  • i meant this not his

  • I love his anime and I love Ayumu/Osaka XD Kira Vincent Davis plays her, KIRA ALSO PLAYS LUCY FROM ELFEN LIED O_O

  • Yay! Dubbed anime! I love Osaka.....

  • yay mee too!!!! this is one of the best dubbed animes ive ever seen cause i laughed harder in the english version more than the japanese =D

  • Osaka was given a Southern accent in the dub because it "shares the business-oriented attitude with Osaka as well as the country image that color both the Southern and Osaka accents" (Translation notes, Azumanga Daioh, volume 1).

  • Isn't it though!?

  • This is so awesome!!!Yomi sounds alittle bored, though.

  • It's hard to believe this is a professional dub, forget the fact that the voice-actors are extremely dull, the quality of the voice seems to be on par with most basement fan-dubs...

The original voice actors fit so perfectly well with their characters that watching a dub like this makes me cringe a little.

  • I agree, why does Osaka sound like a southerner (American southerner that is) the dubs are very poor for this show.

  • I don't get it either. Most english anime dubbs seem to have this same problem. Osaka had such a cute, funny voice before, but in english it's so corny. She's still a pretty funny character, but regardless, nobody in America talks like that. No one I know, anyway...

  • Here's what someone said in another video which made complete sense: Since Osaka is a village that in SOUTHERN Japan, they gave her a southern accent (since it's English, maybe that's why they put her voice like that)

  • No they gave her that accent because the different dialect between Osaka and Tokyo is comparable to the difference between Southern America and Northern America. Osaka itself is actually pretty central of Japan... It's also not a village at all. :)

  • Yeah a lot of people get that confused.

  • omfg the dubbing is terrible....

  • Do note that certain things can't be translated perfectly. The closet thing is apparently the American Southern accent (Country Bumpkin or something) so at least give them credits for trying to replicate an equivalent.
