Magnificently done by both. Latin has always been for me the language of Mass and evocative church music (with that I do not discount charismatic/gospel music. They certainly have a vital part to play). I miss it very much. Lovely to hear two voices I love.
Nitpicking indeed, I'm not a Bolton fan but give the man credit. How many other pop singers could do this, or conversely, imagine Placido standing on a stage with Jimmy Buffet doing Margaritaville. Now THAT would sent all the sophisticates into a tiss.
Michael Bolton has an awsome voice : deep, strong and eventhough tamed by his talent, discipline and long experience of perfoming, great and stunning !! thanks for the video and for the performance.

I knew Michael Bolton was studying opera and have listened to one great CD but this far exceeds anything I've heard from him. As someone else said, Placido Domingo is not singing with an amateur. How fantastic!!
I love how Placido Domingo's microphone are far away from him and how he's so clearly audible during the duet part, even though Micheal Bolton is singing almost directly into his.
Great performance and combination of vocal styles. For once, a non lyrical singer sounds decent next to an opera superstar.
I was introduced to opera through a recording of this a long time ago. I also became a fan of Placido Domingo from listening to this. As I listened and heard Domingo's voice, I thought, "Man, this guy is good! I need to find more songs by him." And I did. To this day, he is my all-time favorite opera singer. I am so glad he is still with us, and can still sing amazingly well for a man who is approaching 70. :)
@TheVoicelesson gees, the dude had only just started learning and singing this type of song, because he discovered through Pavarotti what a beautiful, wonderful world opera music has to offer to those willing to really listen. He dosn't have years of training like those he sings with. He just sings with his heart. I can appreciate the beauty even if he is a novice. I LOVE his tone. I think it is sexy......maybe shouldn't say that for this song.....but it is true. Very manly
Just out of observation, Michael probably has the softest looking lips I've ever seen on a man. I'm just saying. But this is one heck of a performance. O_~
It's stupid. Music is supposed to conect people. Even if they're weak in technique as long as it's not full opera performance but just concert/recital I think it's okay to show people that opera/baroque songs etc. are not only for "special" people but for everyone to enjoy
Michael Bolton surprised me with his ability to sing along side one of the great tenors in the world today and achieve success once again as a vocalist far superior to many in music today. The two made this Ave Maria a truly special experience.
Oh, I have very pleasant memories with this. This was the song that introduced me to Placido Domingo. I had this on a CD with Michael Bolton singing Christmas tunes. I was a huge fan of Michael Bolton, and I found it very surprising that he was singing with an opera star. I thought, "Man, this guy sounds good! I should hear him more often!" And I did.
Placido Domingo is a superb singer, a man who could hold his own with the likes of Luciano Pavarotti! I thought Michael Bolton did very well and added his own distinctive voice to the song.
Ave Maria esta hermososima cancion es como para uno ponrse a llorar de la emosion estos tenores hacen llorar hasta la virgen santisima Pavarotti placido y Carreras.
Bolton is quite amazing, yes, and I was not expecting such a voice, but Placido Domingo is just so over powering, he is a good two feet from the microphones and Bolton is all up on it. Ah well, either way it is amazing.
I am old enough to remember when Catholic services were in Latin and the 'Ave Maria' has special significance for me, as I'm sure it does for all Catholics. Bolton's performance raised goosebumps on my arms ... he absolutely nailed both the song and the spirit behind the song. Stunning !!!!
Actually Bolton sung the song a tone higher than Domingo... The training is different but Bolton definitively is Tenor since he has easily the notes for
Anyone saying that Bolton is very bad in this rendition, I think he did extremely well, and he has the guts to stand with one of the best opera singers of our time and dish it out with him.

Michael isn't that bad and neither is he as good as placido.I must say though he sounds better in rock than opera. But kudos to him ,being able to sing opera!
I was searching what was wrong with his voice because obviously there is something wrong. It looks like hes singing with a filter in the throat. Words dont go out clear as they do for Placido.
Granted, but sung in a style... and with a performer generally considered one of the very finest Operatic tenors of our time... such that making this distinction smacks of nitpicking, however intellectually intended. :)
@Stevieboy130664 I have to totally agree with you here. The soul is so much more important to me than foolish technical ability. If somebody can SOUND amazing that is one thing, but if another can sing the same song with less technical ability and make me cry, then guess who's better?
Wonderful Michael Bolton i just had the honor to see him perform him self in Malta he was amazing! last thing i have to say to those who are talking about rock and classic music and that Bolton is not suitable to sing classic music. Thank god we have an artist like him who can sing any type of music with his magnificent voice cos we don't have much like him!!
you're great Michael hope to see you again in Malta
Wonderful performance. But, please, why didn't someone tell Michael Bolton to cut his hair. He is very handsome but the hair was very distracting. Don't these people have dressers and hair stylists?
You can't study a gender like Rock, you have no rules and you haven't an history of centuries behind Rock musical gender.Rock is one thing and Classical music another. Placido Domingo has a diaphragmatic way of singing, Bolton sing more "with his nose" (impossible in classical music). Rock is a more simple way to do music maybe. Anyway I don't think we have to compare two things so different. I feel glad when the to gender meets and I think that this is an outstanding and beautiful duet.
Bolton did a choice in Rock, Huang and Domingo another choice in classical music.
Bolton was called for the Christmas in Vienna's concert as modern singer and he did his job properly as a good rocker.
Classical music world need to study hard but people in it have chosen to do it. if the methods are alienating and frustrating you have to criticize Classical Academy not a rocker that had the chance to work for a while with a GREAT Tenor.
I would like to say that If you choose to enter in Classical Musical World you're choosing hard-work and competition, in the rock world is the same if you want to be famous the only difference is that playing in a Garage is less comfortable than playing in a conservatory but there is no professors mobbing you.
....but that's the point. There's a difference between "playing" and "studying/practicing". Rock musicians only "play" in a garage as their practice. Classical musicians never "play" when they practice. They systematically study and build their technique based on a proven method, and they subdivide their pieces into micro-level parts when they practice. Playing for 8 hours is not hard work at all, and it's not "practice." Those are very different things.
Placido Domingo has chosen to work with Bolton and with Huang to realize one of the most beautiful and Incredible Christmas in Vienna's Concert and the three have done that Job perfectly.
Bolton's voice is simply fantastic from the point of you of a rock-listener (and absolutely charming in "Silent night") and Huang and Domingo are perfect in their Classical (and diaphragmatic) way of singing and I think they had amused themselves in working with a "modern" singer
I think this is the most beautiful duet of this cherished song that I have ever heard. It may not be the norm, but the pairing of this two very different voices is pure genius and never fails to make me cry. Please, no unkind comments. This is just my opinion and I am entitled to it.
Um es auf Deutsch zu sagen,: Ich schmelze dahin, wenn ich Bolton und Domingo zusammen singen höre. Es ist ergreifend und wunderschön! My translate in eglish could never recover what I feel, so I just have to give my commetn in german language. Thank you Mr. Bolton, love you so much und thank you Placisdo Domingo
Yes. We're shouted at, beaten, insulted, criticized, and humiliated by our professors day after day, and we endure a lot of tears during our years of conservatoire training. (starting from the age of 5) Even after decades of training, many students are not given the right to perform certain repertoire on stage. (just like in the ballet world) Savaric86, I'm sure that you also appreciate classical music because of its deep and complex nature and difficulty to perform.
Placido Domingo did not meet Michael Bolton on the stage for the first time! He knew the way Michael Bolton sings and get on stage cause he wanted to sing with him together and I think it sounds very very good. Michael Boltons Voice is otherwise and I love it
Poor Maestro Domingo. How he must be suffering when he is standing on stage and listening to Bolton singing...His poor ears and nerves...This says so much about the Maestro's kind, charitable, and patient character. This is such an insult.
Savaric86, I'm sure that you have a profession too. Don't you think as a human being, the conservatory-trained musicians have the right to feel sad and violated when pop singers sing our repertoire? Here, at the Moscow Conservatory, students have trained for 8 or 9 hours every single day without weekends for decades. Young children go into the Conservatory's elementary school (boarding school) and we sacrifice everything for almost 20 years until we graduate from the conservatory.
No, I don't think so. Domingo himself chose to sing with Bolton. It was his decision, as he sure as hell didn't have to do it. These statements show arrogance and discredit Domingo's intelligence.
You certainly have a right to your opinion but these men chose to work together to add what reverence they could to an already beautiful song. I think each succeeded and together, they created genius.
Domingo singing with Michael Bolton is kind of like Michael Bolton is making the great Maestro bend down on his knees and pick up garbage from the floor (or making the Maestro clean the toilet). This is incredible.
They sacrifice absolutely everything for twenty years in order to earn the right to perform certain repertoire. We cut off friends, dating, and even our feelings and endure the solitude and work hard. We have lessons or classes every day of the week, (on Saturdays and Sundays as well) and spend our Christmas Days and our birthdays in solitude, practicing. If you don't let us keep our desire to keep the standards of classical music high, who will maintain the level in the world?
Savaric86, the person who is using the name MikhailVoskresensky is a prizewinner of the 2007 International Tchaikovskiy Competition. He studies under Prof.Voskresensky with me and he's the most humble hardworking guy I've ever known. He's not a creep like you think.
What does it matter? Domingo did this with Bolton. He sure as hell doesn't need the money or the attention. He did it because he wanted to. To say he's poor because of that shows arrogance.
exellent. ive seen michael bolton sing and dominate all soul singers and rock stars when it comes to singing live. here we have the greatest soul singer up against the pure class of domingo .ooooh they were fantastic. domingo ....just
Plácido Domingo is incredible...I think he's someone Michael Bolton obviously admires trmendously. Bolton may not be in Domingos league as a classical singer, but on the other hand, you probably wouldn't want to hear Placido attempting to sing top 40. I think Boltons raw street sounding performance was actually a great compliment to Placidos highly trained precision tecnique. Bravo Domingo and Bolton!
I am so glad someone feels as I do about this duet. I think this pairing actually shows each man to his advantage and their being together on this most reverent of songs just brings more beauty to it. Bravo to each for feeling this important enough to do. I never tire of this duet.
MiriKirchner, I completely agree! How the Maestro must be enduring! Hats off to the Maestro's professionalism for not squinting and writhing in agony...any conservatory trained musician would naturally be stunned by Michael Bolton's performance, and his eyes would naturally widen with horror and shock and disbelief.

Michael isn't that bad and neither is he as good as placido.I must say though he sounds better in rock than opera. But kudos to him ,being able to sing opera!
jazzy1003 2 years ago
I was searching what was wrong with his voice because obviously there is something wrong. It looks like hes singing with a filter in the throat. Words dont go out clear as they do for Placido.

Mr. Bolton needs a lot of practice. Stick to the pop stuff.

i am very shocked about michael bolton! he is a great opera singer! i think placido is not singing with an amateur! really grande!!!!!
blackdylan9 3 years ago 16
@blackdylan9 this song is not opera! :)
sergiotmujica 1 year ago
Granted, but sung in a style... and with a performer generally considered one of the very finest Operatic tenors of our time... such that making this distinction smacks of nitpicking, however intellectually intended. :)
Mummyscurse 1 year ago 2
@blackdylan9
He's not an opera singer but he sings this with real soul - and that is more important - despite his mullet - thank God he's lost that.
@Rikster1111
You're being rather pompous. I don't see Placido Domingo complaining.
This isn't opera - it is a hymn. The meaning and devotion are more important than any technical prowess
Stevieboy130664 1 year ago 3
@Stevieboy130664 I have to totally agree with you here. The soul is so much more important to me than foolish technical ability. If somebody can SOUND amazing that is one thing, but if another can sing the same song with less technical ability and make me cry, then guess who's better?
VAAMusicalMike 1 year ago 3
@blackdylan9 if you knew best, you would know that michael Bolton is NOT an opera singer AT ALL!

Wonderful Michael Bolton i just had the honor to see him perform him self in Malta he was amazing! last thing i have to say to those who are talking about rock and classic music and that Bolton is not suitable to sing classic music. Thank god we have an artist like him who can sing any type of music with his magnificent voice cos we don't have much like him!!
you're great Michael hope to see you again in Malta

just wonderful ¡¡

Wonderful performance. But, please, why didn't someone tell Michael Bolton to cut his hair. He is very handsome but the hair was very distracting. Don't these people have dressers and hair stylists?

hey Buddy it's his hair not yours, he can do what he wants with it

You can't study a gender like Rock, you have no rules and you haven't an history of centuries behind Rock musical gender.Rock is one thing and Classical music another. Placido Domingo has a diaphragmatic way of singing, Bolton sing more "with his nose" (impossible in classical music). Rock is a more simple way to do music maybe. Anyway I don't think we have to compare two things so different. I feel glad when the to gender meets and I think that this is an outstanding and beautiful duet.
yukari4288 3 years ago 2
The point is not changing.
Bolton did a choice in Rock, Huang and Domingo another choice in classical music.
Bolton was called for the Christmas in Vienna's concert as modern singer and he did his job properly as a good rocker.
Classical music world need to study hard but people in it have chosen to do it. if the methods are alienating and frustrating you have to criticize Classical Academy not a rocker that had the chance to work for a while with a GREAT Tenor.
yukari4288 3 years ago
Sorry not "point of you" but "point of view"
I would like to say that If you choose to enter in Classical Musical World you're choosing hard-work and competition, in the rock world is the same if you want to be famous the only difference is that playing in a Garage is less comfortable than playing in a conservatory but there is no professors mobbing you.
So whatever have you chosen go on and good luck!
yukari4288 3 years ago
....but that's the point.

Yukari4288, Sorry. What is the point of this stupid comment?
jameskktuesday 3 years ago
Placido Domingo has chosen to work with Bolton and with Huang to realize one of the most beautiful and Incredible Christmas in Vienna's Concert and the three have done that Job perfectly.
Bolton's voice is simply fantastic from the point of you of a rock-listener (and absolutely charming in "Silent night") and Huang and Domingo are perfect in their Classical (and diaphragmatic) way of singing and I think they had amused themselves in working with a "modern" singer
yukari4288 3 years ago

Michael Bolton the classical music world terrorist... American people don't feel shame.
EduardMagnolia 3 years ago 2
Yes. We're shouted at, beaten, insulted, criticized, and humiliated by our professors day after day, and we endure a lot of tears during our years of conservatoire training. (starting from the age of 5) Even after decades of training, many students are not given the right to perform certain repertoire on stage. (just like in the ballet world) Savaric86, I'm sure that you also appreciate classical music because of its deep and complex nature and difficulty to perform.
apricotlush 3 years ago
Placido Domingo did not meet Michael Bolton on the stage for the first time! He knew the way Michael Bolton sings and get on stage cause he wanted to sing with him together and I think it sounds very very good. Michael Boltons Voice is otherwise and I love it
Love you Mr. Bolton respect!

Poor Maestro Domingo. How he must be suffering when he is standing on stage and listening to Bolton singing...His poor ears and nerves...This says so much about the Maestro's kind, charitable, and patient character. This is such an insult.

Your statement shows nothing but arrogance.. sad.
Savaric86 3 years ago 3
Savaric86, I'm sure that you have a profession too. Don't you think as a human being, the conservatory-trained musicians have the right to feel sad and violated when pop singers sing our repertoire? Here, at the Moscow Conservatory, students have trained for 8 or 9 hours every single day without weekends for decades. Young children go into the Conservatory's elementary school (boarding school) and we sacrifice everything for almost 20 years until we graduate from the conservatory.
solemnnote 3 years ago
No, I don't think so. Domingo himself chose to sing with Bolton. It was his decision, as he sure as hell didn't have to do it. These statements show arrogance and discredit Domingo's intelligence.
Savaric86 3 years ago
You certainly have a right to your opinion but these men chose to work together to add what reverence they could to an already beautiful song. I think each succeeded and together, they created genius.
melrosemiss 3 years ago
Domingo singing with Michael Bolton is kind of like Michael Bolton is making the great Maestro bend down on his knees and pick up garbage from the floor (or making the Maestro clean the toilet). This is incredible.
mikhailvoskresensky 3 years ago 3
Your statement shows nothing but arrogance.. sad.
Savaric86 3 years ago
They sacrifice absolutely everything for twenty years in order to earn the right to perform certain repertoire. We cut off friends, dating, and even our feelings and endure the solitude and work hard. We have lessons or classes every day of the week, (on Saturdays and Sundays as well) and spend our Christmas Days and our birthdays in solitude, practicing. If you don't let us keep our desire to keep the standards of classical music high, who will maintain the level in the world?
solemnnote 3 years ago
Savaric86, the person who is using the name MikhailVoskresensky is a prizewinner of the 2007 International Tchaikovskiy Competition. He studies under Prof.Voskresensky with me and he's the most humble hardworking guy I've ever known. He's not a creep like you think.
jameskktuesday 3 years ago
What does it matter? Domingo did this with Bolton. He sure as hell doesn't need the money or the attention. He did it because he wanted to. To say he's poor because of that shows arrogance.
Savaric86 3 years ago
mikhailvoskresensky, yes. Completely. I agree.

Bravo Domingo and Bolton!
mechdsn 4 years ago 2
I am so glad someone feels as I do about this duet. I think this pairing actually shows each man to his advantage and their being together on this most reverent of songs just brings more beauty to it. Bravo to each for feeling this important enough to do. I never tire of this duet.
melrosemiss 3 years ago
I love Plácido Domingo but can somebody please do something against Michael Bolton? That's awful.
MiriKirchner 4 years ago
MiriKirchner, I completely agree! How the Maestro must be enduring! Hats off to the Maestro's professionalism for not squinting and writhing in agony...any conservatory trained musician would naturally be stunned by Michael Bolton's performance, and his eyes would naturally widen with horror and shock and disbelief.
jameskktuesday 3 years ago
Lay off the arrogance.. Domingo had enough money and still has. He wouldn't have done it if he hadn't wanted to do it.
