Hey Donald I've got some flea looking bugs at the base of my lettuce plants the don't seem to be eating it but there are a lot of them any idea as to what they are and how to get rid of them
@webcajun everytime i go into my garden i see alot of spiders running around. Will this work on them as well or what can i use or do for them? thank you.
@webcajun well said my friend. Spiders, centipedes and other predatory insects are friends. Aphids, Thrips, Gnats and some beetles are the enemy...on speaking of spiders. Spider MITES are an enemy. Only enemy with the word spider that can be an enemy.
It's funny when my father was alive he always supplied us with our vegetables, as a kid I had to pick them. And the way he dealt with pests was growing certain flower plants with certain vegetables. And he never, ever had a problem with pests. Now at 42 growing my own veg, I wish I had paid attention when I was young. As I don't remember half of what he told me. But I do remember him saying that as he grew up on a farm, that was how they did it. It was a chemical free farm you see. Great Vids
@webcajun Yes I'm sure you do lol.. and as I hate spiders you have a few more bugs than I would prefer to be close to :) I love your property, that would be my dream to be self sufficient. Your videos are wonderful, and very informative. I was wondering, I was advised to cut out all side shoots in my toms, you know what I mean, shoot that forms where there is already a branch, and as a rule of thumb here in the UK we tend to pinch out the top after six flower runs up the branch.
@one4all1000 I though this is more to do with the factt we don't have the hot summers like you guys do in the states. But I note you don't, do think it would if I was to let next years toms just grow away? Or do you think with our climate it;s likely to produce a poor crop?
@one4all1000 ...We call it "pinching off the suckers". Some claim that's what needs to be done some say no. I don't do it and have some pretty good production. Guess it's up to the gardener and what he was taught to do......Donald
@MrCensorman Try the free store. Go to your recycling drop off and get all the free plastic pots you want. Ours is located beside the homedepot and walmart. You may want to carry a stick with you so you can reach the pots in the middle of the bin.
What's in the Ivory Soap? I try to use home remedies that are chemical free, if not buy the chemicals................................................................................................ I beleive that healthy plants helps to keep the bugs away. Some bugs are looking for weak, vulnerable plants. Then there are some you have to your babies (plants) defend them selves. That's just my position. Great video

How did this bug spray work for you ? I had problems with cabbage worms and squash vine borers. Would this help solve that problem ? Or do you have another remedy? Thanks.
Donald, Here in Texas, the weatherman says tomorrow, we are to get yet another snow storm.... I think when I moved here nf rom Nevada 6 months ago, I may have made another geographical error. LOL Donald two years ago, I was 325 pounds, now 205 and have another 25 pounds to go. Why is t anything which taste good, is bad for you?,,,This years garden lost of tomatoe plants so I can do up lots of Chow Chow, and corn relish....WE have today had rain, snow, hail, and sleet. That puts some damping on gardening; as garden area is a float. By the way a good weed and grass killer for drive ways is box of salt, 1/4 bottle dawn soap and bucket of water, shake and spray..kills everything.
@rayvt1 ... Wish I could loose about 150 lbs. myself. Rain started about 11 AM with some snow, ice and really cold temps for the rest of the week. I'll be crying for rain in the summer but for now I've got enough......Donald
Donald, we moved here 6 months ago, and we have found everyone over here super friendly. I built a 16x24 woodworking shop for my wife, and every day my neighbors were there to help. When we needed something (tool) as mine were still in boxes somewhere, they would loan me theirs, bring us new food to try (sweet potato pie, hush puppies, etc) Now I am helping one of them build their 36x16 shop) In Nevada I could be laying outside dieing and they would set over me. @pafl2009 about your comment regarding deer rabits and groundhogs
well one thing i know this will keep deer away because of the soap for some reason deer ain't like soap i have a major deer problem around me i tryed fences triplines and a lot of other stuff but nothing works better thhan soap
@RagingHippoputamus and Donald - Nearly all of the Organic Gardening sites have this same recipe, where you use boiled down cayenne pepper and any type of dishwashing liquid (or basically anything that is sticky). I wonder if starch will work better? Google "cayenne pesticide" and the recipe comes right up.
@saintveil ... just noticed your comment. You can buy the pepper and garlic concentrate online which you can use along with the soap. I think the soapy water also works on some bugs because I can remember my father using it on his cauliflower. That was 50 years ago so it's been around for awhile........Donald
any tips on how to get rid of fungus on my mater, pepper plants and watermelons? the problem is starting at the bottom of the plants so i know its prob coming from the roots but i know its not too much water because i live in florida and the soild dries very fast. any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
@booklegger ... you sure can. They even sell concentrated pepper and garlic (liquid) for just this purpose. Kind of expensive but it goes a long way.......Donald
I'm from Miami. I'm wondering if I can use it on my Key Lime Tree for leaf miners. Also, can I use it on my tomatoes or will it change the taste? Thanks for great advice in all of your videos.
@virginiaomalley ... not sure how it works on trees but I'd give it a try as it shouldn't hurt. Hadn't changed the taste of any of my vegetables. Add garlic to the mix and I think it works better...... Donald
Being single mom, I am always looking for frugal tips. Do you think this can be used in the house on any bugs? We tend to get ants and spiders in our small country home. This sounds safe for pets and young children, as well s asthmatics.
I use chewing tobacco juice. Listerine, and any liduid soap.
Take chewing tobacco and water and bring the water just before the boiling point. Let it simmer for a good 10 minutes. This will get the juice out of the tobacco. Strain the juice and put 4 cups of tobacco juice with 2 cups listerine and 2 teaspoon of any liduid soap. The soap makes it stick to the plants. After a rain you will need to spray again.
Hey! Im from England and im sure we will not have the same bugs as you do in the U.S but similar ones. So im going to give it a go as it looks to have worked well for you. My question is does the spray change the taste of the veg e.g lettuce ect? I love all you tips and help. Thank you very much. Nat

Mules are strong & have more endurance than a horse! The new bars have glycerin. Not sure if Ivory is organic or not? I will try this w/ cayenne & castile soap. Shalom
@donnieb5213 ... you certainly can add the garlic which will "help" drive them away. I wouldn't count on this as my main weapon for bug control. I still use my liquid Sevin when they get too bad..... Donald
Have you tried to eat any of it yet,is it hot from the spray,if it is I guess it would be good for Tacos at least lol? Thank you for the nice video and info, and that was nice of someone to send you the gift.
I tried your recipe substituting some old dried habaneros for the jalapenos. Didn't have any Ivory soap, so I used 2 Tbs of Dr. Bronner's liquid peppermint soap for 1 gallon finished product. No blenderizing of the soap needed and it worked like a charm on the early May bugs here in Michigan. Still a bit early here though. The big hot-weather bugs haven't arrived yet. Note: I cut the pepper quantities in 1/2 due to the fiery nature of the Habaneros. Thanks for the tip. Keeps the rabbit away too.
@webcajun No, no I actually took a bar of soap and grated it. I added water to it (and some garlic oil) a week ago. It's spraying a lot less goopy looking and is not burning the plants but it doesn't seem to be working. The bugs are going to work on my plants. I spray under the leaves too. It is my first vegetable garden so maybe I'm not accounting that some bugs are going to happen. I just have a 4x4 SFG so I don't have any surplus for the bugs :D Love your videos!
Great video man i'll have to try this out....just an idea with the bar of soap try using a cheese grater it would probably break the soap up into finer chunks from the start.
oh donald i forgot im also growing a soapwort plant could i use that instead of the ivory soap, with both the soapwort and the habinero peppers there'll be no cost to me since there in the garden. so i was just wondering you thought on that. would they work?? thanks for you vids there great!!
@anthonyhondasi ... Hey Raquel, I would think the hotter the pepper the beter but that's just a guess. Don't know anything about the Soapwort plant........... Donald
Donald, i love your vidios!! i was wondering if you think i could use habinero peppers or would they burn the plants there becuase there so hot?just wonering because i'll have some in the garden this year.. raquel
@ft2judy ... I'm going to work with it a little more this year to see if I can't get control of more bugs. It works for some and not for others. Not sure about squash bugs but it won't hurt to try it......... Donald
Thanks for responding - I will try your mix and see how it works and let you know - keep up the good work...

How come when I grow my head lettuce, the seedlings never hold up to produce true leaves?
onyisraw2009 1 year ago
@onyisraw2009 ... not sure I get your question. Are you asking why your plants grow leggy? ......Donald
webcajun 1 year ago
@webcajun My seedlings get about an inch tall, and then they fall over and die, so they never produce true leaves.
onyisraw2009 1 year ago
@onyisraw2009 ... sounds like "Damping Off" caused by too much watering. Plants stems get real small at soil level and fall over .......Donald

what can be a substitute for ivory soap..??
RagingHippoputamus 1 year ago
@RagingHippoputamus ... It’s my understanding that you cannot use detergent, only real soap. Check the label in the store before buying....... Donald
webcajun 1 year ago
@RagingHippoputamus and Donald - Nearly all of the Organic Gardening sites have this same recipe, where you use boiled down cayenne pepper and any type of dishwashing liquid (or basically anything that is sticky). I wonder if starch will work better? Google "cayenne pesticide" and the recipe comes right up.
saintveil 1 year ago
@saintveil ... just noticed your comment. You can buy the pepper and garlic concentrate online which you can use along with the soap. I think the soapy water also works on some bugs because I can remember my father using it on his cauliflower. That was 50 years ago so it's been around for awhile........Donald

Mix up a little household ammonia with that and you can fertilize at the same time. Try it on a few plants so you don’t burn em up.

Being single mom, I am always looking for frugal tips. Do you think this can be used in the house on any bugs? We tend to get ants and spiders in our small country home. This sounds safe for pets and young children, as well s asthmatics.
jakesfrugalmomma 1 year ago
@jakesfrugalmomma ... I wouldn't use this inside the house. If some of that pepper gets into your eyes or mouth it will burn real bad....... Donald

Can you add concentrated garlic to this mix? Does this kill the bugs or just drive them away?
donnieb5213 1 year ago
@donnieb5213 ... you certainly can add the garlic which will "help" drive them away. I wouldn't count on this as my main weapon for bug control. I still use my liquid Sevin when they get too bad..... Donald

Keeps the rabbit away too.

redherringbone 1 year ago
@redherringbone ... Bet you use detergent instead of the Ivory Soap? ......... Donald
webcajun 1 year ago
@webcajun No, no I actually took a bar of soap and grated it. I added water to it (and some garlic oil) a week ago. It's spraying a lot less goopy looking and is not burning the plants but it doesn't seem to be working. The bugs are going to work on my plants. I spray under the leaves too. It is my first vegetable garden so maybe I'm not accounting that some bugs are going to happen. I just have a 4x4 SFG so I don't have any surplus for the bugs :D Love your videos!
