Very interesting but shouldn't Hoffmann's final 'Antonia!' end with an anguished top note finish? The version I'm desperately trying to track down is Andrei Serban's surreal but visually stunning Vienna State Opera production. It was the first opera my children ever saw and I have spent countless hours trying to track it down on dvd. If anyone has any suggestions on obtaining a copy I'd be eternally grateful as I'd love to relive that experience with the family. Thanks!
I agree, Professorpepper. It should be the one of the most tragic notes in the whole opera. When I first heard it, it was one of those "moments"in music that converted me to being an opera lover
Sorry, but i don't have the info that you need to track down your ultimate version
Actually I've just watched the dvd of Louis Erlo's production for Lyon Opera. Now that is a tragedy from start to finish. A terrible version of the libretto too. I like modern productions as well as traditional ones but Erlo's is an absolute shocker. If you want to see a wonderful opera killed by bad direction and grim scenery look no further. That version is the ideal present for an opera fan you happen to hate...
Chapeau Monsieur Py ! ! !
