  • Sounds a lot more like Mike Ratledge on organ than Rick Wright. Compare their playing on 'Volume 1' and 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn', respectively, and see what I mean.

  • @bmoriarty880 There are a lot of similarities between Rick and Mike and they clearly had an influence on each other. Syd's playing however is absolutely distinct and inimitable in style. It strikes me odd how few people seem to recognize his slide playing with the binson echo. Or that staccato chord playing that can be heard all over songs like Stethoscope and others. As for the organ they both used Binsons , but I can hear it is Rick. Mikes playing is always structured.

  • This is DEFINITELY not Soft Machine. UFO Floyd all the way, from Wright's organ to Waters' bass to Syd's warped guitar attack.

  • How the hell did I not know about this? More buried treasure unearthed!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very intriguing to think this is Stethoscope (would be the only live recording of this song) ~ I'd have to agree that's the most likely candidate, unless an Interstellar jam took a very funky bluesy turn...

  • @my3snappy It seems most likely to be Stethoscope as same kind of playing is heard. There are very distinct Syd guitar parts such as his hitting the open

E very loud in a way that can also be heard in the video from " The young night crawlers" Also the slide playing with the zipo and binson echo unit as well. Of course there are some retards that don't recognize these things. Also I know some one who was at UFO and he thinks this is most likely the UFO club as the local is not clear.

  • Ooops BTW I wanted to say the song is " Take up Thy Stethoscope and walk " and not Pow R Toc H. Thinking about the ideas of morons is rubbing off. LOL Not that the idiots would know the difference in the songs any way. This song is Stethoscope most likely and just listen to it on Piper and you can hear them playing just as fast and crazy as this. This is a work of genius of the Floyd. BTW I am also a huge Soft Machine fan too.

  • the band on the footage is pink floyd at ufo club but the music is early soft machine

  • @mudhoney110283 Not so idiot !

  • @alexlancer11 Real clever argument you stupid musically retarded idiot. Wow look what this genius said. " Not so idiot " What an argument you make. I guess you can not help that you are stupid and have no appreciation or ear for Syd's Pink Floyd. For all you true Pink Floyd fans out there , please do not let these morons fool you. I am a true Syd Barrett Floyd fan and I can easily tell this is them. But I am sure more idiots will try to say other wise. They have no musical taste.

  • thank you so much !

  • i don't care what you do, but Floyd never played like this......go listen to early Soft Machine..get a musical education siouxie

  • @EndlessNot1 God you are dumb. Did you ever listen to Power Toc H ? That is clearly the song being played. And also if you could actually play a guitar you can see that there hands are playing correctly to the notes heard. This is clearly Syd's Pink Floyd and you really need to STFU. Most people who know anything about The Floyd know that Piper was a piece of garbage as most UFO people felt it was not there true sound live. BTW This bass line is on scream thy last scream OK idiot ?

  • Why should I do anything you want? Get it into your BIG FAT HEAD.

It is SYD BARRETT, ROGER WATERS and PINK FLOYD. But go ahead and delude yourself. I'm done.

  • More Syd, less girl!

  • Being at the UFO club in London would have tripped me out. Acid, deranged music and all the celebrities i would have had a heart attack.

  • Music seems to help the pain; seems to motivate the brain; doctor kindly tell your wife that I'm alive, flowers thrive, realize, realize, realize!

  • Good chance this song is actually " Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk " no way to be sure , but there are similarities and the base line has that pulsating pattern in the middle Roger liked. Syd is doing the same kind of staccato type chord playing. To be fair to our soft machine conspiracy whack jobs the bands no doubt influenced each other at UFO. It is very clearly Syd's distinct guitar style. Takes a true fan to realize it apparently.

  • Funny it sounds a lot like the style from the other 2 UFO club recordings. Oh did you notice that the base line is the same as" scream thy last scream in parts " ? Of course you did not as you have not ear for music. Same notes too. But it does not sound like the floyd to a few conspiracy theory types. It is annoying seeing these stupid posts that can influence people that are new to the Pink Floyd sound. Only and idiot would categorically state it is some one else with out proof in any case.

  • @alexlancer11 BTW this is certainly not the song scream thy last scream , but something else far stranger. Scream came out when Syd was really messed up in late 67. However the base line is the same in parts. This is not the first time. There are two songs on the Animals record that use Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive base lines. It is something Roger did hear and there. Most people never heard much early Floyd , but it is clearly them and if you are to dumb to know oh well.

  • FILM SYD GOD DAMNIT

  • not going to keep arguing with you fools..you wanna believe it's Barrett's Floyd...then be happy with your delusion.....it's Soft Machine and that's that..no it's Floyd blah blah blah...get a life

  • @EndlessNot1 Some people are REALLY, REALLY in the dark!

  • @siouxie921 sorry siouxie..i have loads of early Floyd and also early Soft Machine....definitely Soft Machine...Waters never played bass that fast...also Mason never played drums like that...probably Daevid Allen thrashing on the guitar...oh and keyboards, Mike Ratledge, not Rick Wright..talk about in the dark guys...open your ears and close your mouths....believe what you want and quit pestering me

  • Now there U got a point... That's definitely Ratledge shredding his Lowrey Organ. No Pink Floyd here... Bunch of Boons around here...

  • @gillesbertacco finally someone with sense..i felt so alone with my comments on this site

  • @gillesbertacco This is clearly Rick Wright's Farfisa Compact Duo Organ you moron. Of course you have heard it and you just have no ear. It is obvious that it is Syd's playing and Nicks drumming. The song being played here is Stethoscope. BTW why would some one go to a club and hear a band as strange as the Floyd and say Lets record something else over it any way ? You are a bunch of idiots. To be just the two bands did influence each other but you are still a moron.

  • @EndlessNot1 Why don't you listen to Power Toc H you stupid idiot. Waters is playing just as fast in fact I am pretty sure that is the song the Pink Floyd are playing here. Your a moron and clearly not a real early Floyd fan. Also listen to the bass playing on Interstellar over drive from the CBC recording for some fast bass. Sick of hearing stupid people talking like this because it will confuse new Floyd fans that have no way of knowing what a stupd idiot you are.

  • By the way idiots they knew Peter Jenner the Floyd's manager and that is how they wound up shooting them that night. Also if you played guitar you would be able to see that Syd and Rogers hands are moving correct to the music heard. Bunch of idiots it is hard to believe how stupid some people are.

  • @alexlancer11 REALLY!!!

  • Excuse you as you are the stupid one and if you can't tell it is the Floyd then you should really just not listen to them. LOL You clearly can not appreciate the Genius of Syd's Pink Floyd. You don't like the Soft Machine ? Figures you have no taste clearly.

  • @alexlancer11 It's all about SYD, innit? The Floyd - the best and ONLY Floyd w/ Syd Barrrett were known for their long jams, so there's really no way of knowing what the hell song this well.

Whichever it was, whoever was filming was obviously clueless . . .

  • I love the Soft Machine. Genius band and a UFO regular. I have most of there CDs in fact.

  • Sounds like Interstellar Overdrive to me, and their sound, ands looks like Roger around 1:10

  • @electrorocket it looks like Roger (Waters) because IT IS.

  • Nope. I take some early Floyd footage and overdub it with...well...let's be fair. "Domino Dancin' "by the Pet Shop Fags, in shitty...eerm, sorry..."vintage" - Sound Quality......you'd probably buy it. Didn't do yer Homework Dude...

  • these arguments are really dumb...i have countless early Soft machine recordings and it's definitely them...case closed..all you Syd is a genius people.open your ears and close your mouths

  • Another moron speaks. Why me tries ?? LOL

  • @EndlessNot1 Case is closed by you only.

  • You are an idiot. BTW Eric Clapton was a fan of Syd's playing , but I guess you know more then him too. I guess it takes a person with some brains to know genius when they hear it.

  • Nobody can play that "badly" on guitar except for beloved Syd Barret. It's them for sure.

  • WOWZA!!! Now this is something special. See Syd (@ 1:09) playing on stage with a wide grin on his face, so obviously enjoying himself.

    FABULOUS!

  • Hell, how about showing what's ON STAGE? Yeah, I know there's cute chicks prancing around, but really!

  • good acid that night lol

  • Before Pink Floyd got all bloated and boring.

  • SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • looks like pink floyd and sounds like the soft machine. see the beady eye video for four letter word where it's made to look like the UFO club?

  • Sounds nothing like the soft machine at all. I am so sick of seeing these stupid posts. If you listen to the base line it is very close to the end part of "scream thy last scream". Clearly something Roger did here and there. You are so stupid to say that any true Syd Floyd fan knows that it is the Pink Floyd. Syd's playing . Nicks drums , Ricks Keys and Roger. Go stick your stupid head in a hole and please STFU.

  • @alexlancer11 i am a fan and i don't think you've read the other comments fully based on your reaction to mine. didn't these two bands get along? what do you have against the Softs? i'm not massively into them myself but they seem alright. ''you are so stupid to say any true Syd Floyd fan knows that it is the Pink Floyd.'' huh? screw this. i'm only responding to this because you said i wasn't a true Syd era Pink Floyd fan.

  • @StrummingSparrow The musicians in the The Soft Machine actually played on Syd's solo efforts

  • @alexlancer11 Chillax! All those in the know realize Syd was GOD, so f'em all!

  • by the way..i see Roger playing also and his movements aren't even in line with the music...he never played bass runs that fast..i have tons of early Floyd recordings, the keyboard playing, never heard Wright play fast improvising runs like that, as far as guitar, it's either Daevid Allen or Kevin Ayers..and the drumming, that's Robert Wyatt's style all the way....

  • you're dumb..it may be them in the video but it's not them playing..listen to those bass runs..Waters could never play like that..Rick Wright and Mason as well...what you're SEEING and what you're HEARING are two different things, go check out early Soft Machine to compare...if you wanna believe that's Floyd than go ahead..enjoy your delusion and have a great day

  • @EndlessNot1 The audio was recorded at the club with a handheld Sennheiser mike, Nagra sound tape. Info from the filmmaker herself.

  • Sounds like early Soft machine..Probably.Daevid Allen or kevin Ayers..on guitar, Robert Wyatt, drums, definitely not Rick Wright on keys...that's Mike ratledge, and Hugh Hopper , bass

  • no its pink floyd clearly

  • @a280281 if you want to believe that that's Pink Floyd..then go right ahead...Nick Mason never played drums like that...Waters and Wright the same...it's early Soft Machine..end of my discussion

  • are you dumb or something you can CLEARLY see roger waters at 30 seconds into the video and then you can CLEARLY see syd barrett playing his well known strat with round mirrors on, and this is CLEARLY interstella overdrive they are playing.......

  • i would have loved to be at a live 1967 pink floyd performance.

  • 1:12 oh my god he smiles) oh my god)

  • @lizazp92 It's like heaven when he smiles, isn't it?

  • I talked to Flame and it seems likely more was filmed ,but it most likely was lost on the cutting room floor as they say. Hope I am wrong of course. She is very nice and it is a great DVD that I would recommend. It is really cool to see it full screen and the movie really shows off the time period in the UK very well.

  • Is it possible that they filmed more of the band?

  • I wonder if Hendrix saw them live?

  • Hendrix yes. Eric Clapton liked Syd's Pink Floyd too and of course Pete Townshend who gives some fascinating in sites in the book Crazy Diamond. Hendrix was at the UFO to see the Floyd at least once and he toured with them on the Christmas on Earth tour ,but by then Syd was a total mess and the playing was nothing like this. This kind of playing lasted till about mid 67. They still could play this way at times ,but the vegetable man sound was where they went unfortunately.

  • I could tell you couldn't care less since you know nothing about them...you're an Anal Oriented Person so you should like Anal Oriented Rock..your comments keep getting dumber and dumber...

  • the Soft Machine of today is a completely different lineup than the 60's and 70's version so your "assessment" of them is without merit, goes to show how much you really know about them..Album Oriented Rock is fine, i have a lot of fantastic Albums

the Gilmour comment is getting old...

  • @EndlessNot1 I couldn't care less about which old creeps are playing nowadays under the Soft Machine moniker. I also have many fantastic albums but probably not the same as your «fantastic» ones. AOR means Anal Orientated Rock. That's what you get when you hire a busker.

  • strange posting..the music is either Soft Machine, or possibly Matching Mole, but the video shows Pink Floyd

  • Comment removed

  • Definitely Soft Machine...Pink Floyd could never play like that

  • @EndlessNot1 Thank God Pink Floyd never did play like this... let a chicken walk around on a keyboard and you get the same kind of noise! Now I've got to listen to Rhinestone Cowboy and Kung Fu Fighting in order to soothe my nerves...

  • @1ndi64 let a Guinea Pig run across a typewriter and it'll sound like your comments

go check out "You Is Woman" by Helen Reddy..Soft Machine is beyond your musical comprehension

  • @EndlessNot1 No it doesn't. A guinea pig can't write words. So you think you're the only one who can «understand» Soft Machine, huh. But Helen Reddy is beyond your musical comprehension, Buddy. She did sing interesting songs, not just boring pseudo progressive plinkety plonk.

  • @1ndi64 who said anything about the Guinea Pig writing words?

  • @EndlessNot1 Stop bothering me. Go listen to your tedious pseudo progressive noise, and I will gladly enjoy the un-progressive but cute and charming Helen Reddy. Listen buddy, what's your so called progress good for? Pink Floyd turned into an AOR act under the guidance of an ex-busker, and Soft Machine are just another oldies group today.

  • @EndlessNot1 Really? Were you there?

  • @siouxie921 Idiot

  • I suspect the music on the soundtrack to be Soft Machine rather than Pink Floyd. The bass sounds like Kevin Ayers - it's definitely not a Fender like Roger Waters used, much more like the semi-acoustic Gibson favoured by Ayers. The keyboards are far more Mike Ratledge than Rick Wright. It sounds like a chunk out of a particularly rousing version of "Hope For Happiness".

  • It's a shame the backing track doesn't match the video, so this is not a truly live clip.

  • THIS IS WHAT ?

  • THIS IS WHAT ?

  • I wish I could have been in that era, cause it seems that there you could "dance"or move to your own beat and nobody would give a shit about it.....totally different from now.

Even the music was so open, so experimental, breaking all rules...cool.

  • @smooro

You still may move to your own beat, why worry?

LOL, I was around and saw Pink Floyd on various occasions during my meanderings, along with many others.

Where I live now, many of the bands play what they think audiences want, rather than, as I do, play what you want and see if the audience likes it.

So far the score is, 99% for playing what I want to, they like it and to hell with the rest....

    Long live rock 'n' roll!

  • Genius!

Has this recording been "released" (ahem) in a longer form anywhere?

Syd's guitar is a bit buried, but what I can make out is monumentally mEnTaL! Fantastic and very very psychedelic.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • in the 60s , it seems, one could explore withourt being concerned with both ego and style.......here are teenyboppers dancing to free jazz.......awesome.

  • hello posthumanhero

I am the filmmaker Diane Rochlin -now Flame Schon.

How do you interpret what you see as "teenyboppers dancing'? You are seeing in this short clip one of the characters in the movie Dope who is definitely not a 'teenybopper' if that means someone teen-aged.

  • ok, "young pwhite scene people who like to dance"......and being subjected to avante garde music.

  • It seems appropriate that the venue for such a chaotic performance cannot be precisely determined.

  • those guys always scared the shit outta me...love 'em

  • That clip is so awesome!

  • Yes it is pure genius I just hope to god we find more. By the way this is probably not at UFO and Schon told me she doubts it is UFO as well. But she is not sure and who knows , but there is an object on the ceiling above Roger that I have never seen at UFO in any photos. But the steep stair way that you see at the end may indicate it is UFO. Any way it is not clear what club it is.

  • where did u find this

  • Who all of a sudden realized that this is a total gem of Floyd and the 60's swinging London underground..Or has this already been released for a while?

  • who has been sitting on this clip for so many years ? AND WHY ??? there's a whole universe of Floyd fans who clamor for any live footage of the band and apparently some guy has had this in his closet for 42 years...if you have any footage Join Yeeshkul and get it out !! thanks to the producers of this film...

  • I am the filmmaker (my name was then Diane Rochlin -now Flame Schon-) along with Sheldon Rochlin. This clip is from the movie Dope shot in London early '67, available on DVD from me. Please email to order entire movie. You can read all about it on Yeeshkul. And do not download it illegally please as someone has stolen it recently. Dope isn't in the "closet" exactly. Thanks, Flame Schon-producer, writer, director, cinematographer, editor of Dope.

  • Maybe a part from Interstellar Overdrive? Somebody knows?

  • i love my pink floyd but my god that sounds like shit

  • this is recorded live in a club on a Nagra on sound tape. obviously not in a studio. It is recorded with one handheld ( I believe Sennheiser) mike.

Flame ( Diane Rochlin-the filmmaker of Dope with Sheldon Rochlin)

  • Wow.....how sad that the cameraman was so infatuated with the mod chick and the great syd was wailing out right next to her! A treasure though.....

  • Wow...dullsvillain....this is excerpt from the feature documentary Dope by myself (now Flame Schon formerly Diane Rochlin and Sheldon Rochlin) and camera operator is actually both genders. Now if you'd see the entire movie (available from me) you'd realize that it's not about Pink Floyd at all, but that we were simply following our character (the mod chick as you've called her) to dance at a club to a cool band. Dope was shot in London in early '67 and provides a context to the Pink Floyd .

  • Oh No LOL .....sorry! I'm all about checking that out ,Swinging London is the bomb.......off to your website>>>>>

  • Dope is not "for sale" ...but it will remain available to all who want it, (for my shipping and handling charge) and I think that seeing the PF in context makes more sense than just an excerpt. Context is everything.

Yeeshkul has a really informative thread about it.

  • @dullsvillain

    Dunno...

    SEEING chick,

    HEARING Syd.

    I think it's all right...

  • Lets hope more and more videos emerge...

    Great stuff!

  • Superb!

    thanks for posting!

  • F U C K Y E A H ! ! !

  • AMAZING!!! Thank you so much for the whole clip!!!

(keep showering silver on the people)

    -Giuliano Navarro

  • Excellent video ! :o)
