@timesplitters333 Iraq and Iran are/were both secular. Saddam was as worried, perhaps even more so (being in much more convenient proximity), about the threat of Islamic extremists as the West was. True, Iraq is a terrorist state "now" ... only because the United States had to move in, remove the central authority without installing any effective alternative in its place, and allow the extremists (who had been suppressed under Saddam's regime) to run rampant.

@timesplitters333 I agree that we have to stay there now ... the trouble is, Iraq was less of a threat with Saddam in power than it would be now (without him) were the U.S. to pull out. Saddam's regime may have been brutal, but it was brutally "effective" in supressing extremism within the country. Osama Bin Laden was, after all, at one point willing to bring his Mujahideen to help keep the Iraqis out of Arabia; he saw it as a travesty when the Saudis instead allowed U.S. troops on Arab soil.

Now is the time to build the country up and establish trade realisations, then we have something to be friends on..
