Best thing about a singer singing a song is, Passion and relating.if you don't have Passion to sing a song, doesn't matter how good your voice is, it will still sound terrible.if you relate to the song, then what is the point of singing it. you're good singer and good guitarist, but you're singing as if you don't know what the song is about (a guy trying to help another guy with a drug problem)- you should be more regretful and helpless and sorry- it was too dreamy and beautiful and pure. also when you go into the 'some sort of window to your right'- you should go an octave higher like the fray did, because it's like a climax, you should build it up, not bring it down.
