  • sheet music??

  • My concept of musical difficulty will never be the same after hearing this.

  • This is an amazing performance great amount of practice these notes are not easy to hit at all. Are you not using Stevens grip?

  • @drockwilliams Burton grip all the way!

  • @datimpster

I haven't seen such a clean and musical performance of this song since Johan Bridger. I know you played this awhile ago but Bravo! That was great. Hope it has a permanent seat in your repertoire :)

  • @3clipse1326 Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • And people say percussion is easy...

  • Dude you rock!

  • This is off the hook.

  • Haha! What a great performance! It's total bullshit to see all these people dissing the video. The only relevant rebuttal to this awesome performance (or even this comment) is a video of someone else playing this solo. As for the performer, Bravo Dr. Stolarik. As for the losers, you're losers.

  • @mastanjb Thank You! Much appreciated! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • @mastanjb Much appreciated! It's not perfect, but I like to think I captured the spirit of the piece!

  • Gosh this looks difficult

  • absolutely beautiful

  • DR. STOLARIK

  • @thunderbird5898 Great to see how far you've come with percussion! I do remember you from LMC!

  • What octave marimba does this require?

  • this is really really good. penis

  • This piece has never really done much for me but I really liked your interpretation! You play with such confidence and your phrasing is beautiful. Great choice of mallets too. What kind did you use? Thanks for posting and, good job!

  • AMAZING!

  • what mallets were you using in this performance?

  • HOW did you memorise this? VERY good.

  • This is really great. Skillfull kickass playing and a real feel for the aesthetic of the work.

    Thnx fr pstng.

  • Nice played!

  • Killer, killer job. I love the aggression! You make me really want to play this piece.

  • goooOOOoood DAMN. You just friggin walked to the marimba, and without warning "BAADDAAMM!!.....tickatickATICKATICKATickaticakBAADDAMM!!!!....tickatickATICKATICKATickaticka" XDXDXD very good

  • so funny how he just starts instantly

  • Woah, Music City Mystique 08.

It's nice to find the original piece.

    Very well played, of course.

  • improper...

  • I believe ive found my next project

  • What brand do you think this marimba happens to be? Mallettech?

And also, boomtao, the music is in fact notated with x heads.

  • I played this on my Marimba One. Thanks for watching!

  • Thank you for playing and answering my question so quickly! I am an aspiring percussionist, and am looking to play this song for a solo as my High School Senior solo. I have a long way to go, but i will never stop.

  • @datimpster

Your marimba one? You're very lucky to own one. :)

  • @minatorasengan1 This is an Artist Series Marimba One.

  • Hey Boss,

I stumbled upon this on accident after poking around Tom Burritts weekly video thing. Awesome playing. Just awesome.

  • Thanks, Ian!

  • i have recently discovered schwantner for myself. was he a percussionist because this and his percussion concerto seem to point towards a particular fansy for writing for percussion instruments

  • i love how he just jumps into it.

  • and has to fix his mallet because of it.

  • UT? yeah man, i'm diggin' it. Wish I had these marimba chops

  • hello, this is a very beautiful performance of this piece and has greatly inspired me to learn this. before i buy it i was hoping you could answer a quick question. what is the lowest note needed for this piece? (what size marimba) thanks

  • You'll need a 5 octave.

  • Hahah you can actually count all of the octaves if you look closely enough.

  • you need a full 5 octave marimba to perform this. Good Luck!!

  • the lowest note is actually an e

even if it is a 5 octave marimba it doesnt mean that the lowest note is thec2

  • you should listen to nanae mimura or fumito nunoya play this piece...

  • Oh how original ! And there is no question the 'composer' heard every note internally - much like Beethoven and Messiaen.

  • Thank you! Very well played! This is a question by an orchestrator: How do you notate it when you hit the mallets at the side-edge with the stick as oposed to the cotton-wrapped tip?

  • Usually, you use different shaped noteheads.

  • I believe in the music it is notated with x note heads

  • Thanks! That would make sense to notate it that way.

  • By not sticking so strictly to the dots and playing around with passages you really have managed to get a greatly unique character of performance. Some really clever ideas. Top drawer!

  • Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it.

  • beautiful

  • I think this is the best version I've ever heard. I can't even listen to the Glennie rendition after hearing this one. I love her style, but you just master this piece more than she does.

  • This is a good performance. The Glennie recording is hideous, I can't believe it made it to release. The best recording I've ever heard is by David Hall on his CD "Saudacao." Definitely worth tracking down, it's unbelievable.

  • Love this piece....What mallets are you using again? I like that extra bite you get in the beginning.

    Sounds great man!

  • that must be amazing to see the guy himself perform the piece. i would have loved to see that, though i wasnt born yet then hahaha XD

  • To my knowledge, Schwantner isn't a particularly great marimbist....

  • How could he write something like this if he wasn't a great marimbist?

  • Excellent accuracy and interpretation. I don't know about the rest of the knuckleheads who gave you a negative review, but I enjoyed it. Bravo! :)

  • Very well played man!

  • What, because it doesn't have singable melodies, it's doesn't sound good? No way. It still sounds fucking amazing in its own respects. Maybe if you listen to it with an open mind, it wouldn't seem so obtuse.

  • Lol. I happen to think it IS singable!

  • Agreed, it doesnt really seem like something that is meant to really be listened too. But i bet it would make an awesome sound track somewhere in a movie.

  • Marimba one marimbas sounds amazing! U just make them sound more great!

  • great job, well played. I especially like the "I'm awesome" gesture right at the end.

  • Listen to Fumito Nunoya play this on his record...it will blow your mind. Best recording of it i have ever heard.

  • Very Solid Performance!!!Nice job!!!

  • dr stolarik.

    wow

    you're really effin good.

and can you guys believe this man here is one of my band directors??

    be jealous

    yess

  • Not an iota shy of "dazzling," piece and performance alike. Congratulations, Dr. Stolarik.

  • it's cool that we live in a time, where i can watch people from all over the world play a piece like this.

  • bro, that was very inspiring.

  • amazing

  • whew, nice!

  • Wow, judging by a lot of the comments, it's clear that this piece provokes some strong reactions. To the performer, let me just say congratulations. That was one of the most musical performances I've heard. I think your interpretations were totally musical. I've played this piece know how hard it is to make some of the sections work. You found some very musical solutions to those problems. Great movement. Now you should do the Schwantner concerto :) And post when you're done!

  • (One more... I should comment on the video) I did enjoy the performance. I haven't heard the piece played with as much rubato or pauses (in a moto perpetuo), though (and this may not be the case at all) I wonder if sometimes you aren't slowing down just because you reached a more difficult section i.e. 3:22; 4:17. I also couldn't hear the accents much in a few places where they are particularly obvious in the score i.e. when they go against the natural line. All in all, it's a solid performance.

  • i hate to say this but this a good piece, but this performance shows a hell of a technic but little music. Those patterns you call lame can be very good music. Music is not only technic guys..

  • It's nice of you guys to prove that you know absolutely nothing about music. Enjoy your next Daughtry concert and NASCAR event...

  • baughman you rock, dude...this piece sucks...it's just a bunch lame patterns strung together, with obnoxious outbursts every so often.

  • no one wants to hear you jab at what they have a passion for. Im sure if you had some videos posted someone would probably start saying the same crap about whatever you do. Playing Marimba is a choice. I choose to do it, and so do millions of other people, including the individual in this video. Everyone is entitiled to their opinion, but maybe you shoudl just keep yours to yourself. I am sure that this student plays very well on all percussion instruments.

  • so I should keep my opinion to myself, unless of course if I agree with you. talk about paranoid...and if you think there are a millions people playing marimba you are really out of touch.

  • I guess what I don't understand is what instrument you believe "has a future" outside of the conservatory system. It's not like being a pianist or violinist is mainstream anymore, unless you count the occasional string accompaniment or piano intros in rock. Maybe marimba was introduced to western civilization too late to gain a repertoire equivalent in size to more traditional orchestral instruments (even though you could say viola, bass, and many other instruments are lacking as well).

  • (cont'd... this is directed at "Paukenkiger") But considering the sheer amount of diverse music available today, I don't think it's possible to make a statement such as "being charged... to play bad music" with any merit beyond that of personal opinion. In fact, one might say it's difficult to make any objective claim as to what is "bad" and "good" music. If you can formulate an argument, I'd love to hear it.

  • (cont'd again... sorry I can't fit everything in a single post) And even considering this broad spectrum of music, it's certainly possible to arrange or compose in almost any style for marimba, so I don't see why you view it as being limited beyond the fact that musicians have not nearly explored the many possibilities of the instrument so thoroughly as with an instrument such as the piano.

  • Well considering you didn't counter any of my arguments perhaps you could at least tell me why my comments are idiotic? and maybe you should explain yourself a little better as I'm not seeing the connection between Keiko Abe and Joseph Schwantner. Also, I'm glad you have to resort to insulting me in order to get your "point" across rather than actually supplying an argument.

  • Educate me. You're not afraid to make big generalizations... defend them. You tell me I'm wrong and you seem pretty unable to come up with ANYTHING to tell me otherwise (besides trying to insult me "not very successfully"). Give me the name of the piece by Keiko Abe you think this was ripped off from. I've yet to hear her use ANY of the harmonies Schwantner uses in his piece or anything similar to his motifs, so maybe you'd like to point those out to a "naive student" such as myself.

  • paukenkiger, just because the marimba has no purpose to you doesn't mean it doesn't have a purpose to others

  • it's called having different tastes? but maybe your just too self-absorbed to think of something as abstract as that...

  • NO U

  • wow. youre the knucklehead paukenkiger. how dare you say something so absurd.

  • agreed. this music means a lot to me. and i don't pay to be at school, it is just part of my love of all music

  • paukenkiger you suck. chill out you ritard. you have no f***ing right to say that this piece sucks.

  • tell you what bud... why dont u go and spend them time and learn this piece post it on youtube where u can be open for anyone and everyones critisism and then u may insult this guy if u played it better... .... .... ... good luck

  • PPS....I guess the conscience of whoever AWH was caught up with him, because his posts aren't up here anymore. :-P

  • No...they were removed, for probably a multitude of reasons.

  • PS: I really like your confidence behind the instrument while you're playing. You know where everything is, where it's going, and what's coming up next. No second guessing in your body language. I like that.

  • By NO means am I hating when I say this: Phenomenal performance. I want to tackle this piece one day. The only thing that caught me off guard was the fact that you went straight into it once you approached the marimba without a prep. Maybe you were just pumped up to give it to the audience, and there's nothing wrong with that (lol). NE ways, that's just a personal preference thing. :-) But I loved it. Keep it up, man.

  • Good job dude. This piece is said to be "impossible" by some and you definitely played it balls to the wall. Don't worry about the chumps who are baggin on it. They're just jealous.

  • I really enjoy how all of the people that are the most critical are the ones that have no video or audio evidence to show how much better they are than me. :)

  • Hey, you are definitely better than me, but don't let your pride go to your head.

Nothing is more annoying than arrogance.

In whatever your endeavours, just remember to show some humility--I will tell you that a non-arrogant percussionist is more likely to get the job than the boasting one.

  • lol dr stolarik is the chuck norris of the marimba.

  • look at the score and see if you can follow every note.

and furthermore, you trying hitting 80+ 2-4 inch wide keys and be 100% accurate.

  • If I could take a guess I would say awh is nothing more than your typical local wannabe musician/teacher, who counters his own insecurity by criticizing others and convincing junior high music students that he is great. Until awh posts a video of himself playing (which I have a feeling will never happen), his opinion means nothing. Anyway, enough about the wannabe. Good job man, I enjoyed your performance.

  • Nice playing. Sure it's not perfect, but I'd say it's a good performance of a piece that no one can say is easy. Except for "awh." It appears that his (or her) talent, knowledge and close personal relationship with LHS (which appears is the only "name" he knows, and probably has ONLY worked with him in a masterclass at some point) has made him an expert. I wouldn't sweat him datimpster.

  • Yeah man, who are you?? A+!

  • excellent job! what mallets are you using for the piece?

  • I didn't know this kind of music but i find it very interesting! better than aphex twin

  • siobelo sei un babbo.

  • braccio86 ti infilo il braccio in culo

  • I'm a pianist and I'm not really "into" this kind of music, but you really convince me with your playing! Great dynamics and a very moving performance!

  • Ignore my query, your playlist answers my question!

  • This is an excellent video, and the sound quality is very good. Where and when did you record it?

  • You played the snot out of that! good job!
