I once had a 49 Custom 4 door with the 239 flathead V8 with headers and duals and a 54 overdrive and yes you can shift 6 times. this was in the early 60s and we thought it was so neat. You could do nearly 90 in second overdrive!

just like a truck with "split-shift",half gears..did the same with my volvo once,just a on-off switch for the overdrive on the dash..but 3rd "with overdrive" was pretty close to 4th..2nd+ was nice on forest roads though...

What a beautiful car. Those old Ys sound so evil with straight pipes and a fat cam. I had a '57 Fairlane with a 312 single four straight pipes to the bumper mild cam. Not quite as loud as your lakes, but loud enough! -R-
