Gabriela Montero plays Liszt's piano paraphrase based on Rigoletto

The introduction is excruciatingly slow, and the crescendo at 0:30 alone disqualifies this as a notable Rigoletto recording. The fast single-note passages are done superbly, but then the melody sags too much. Other good points, but there's no shortage of better recordings. Cortot, de Pachmann, Yundi Li, Cziffra, and Horowitz played a few excerpts.

IMO this is as good as any recording of this piece I have heard, technically & musically. I like how it sounds wistful, hesitant for most of the piece, like somebody dreaming about a former lover but repressing it because they're not there any more. Towards the end the dreamer gets into it and forgets that it's only a dream.

@whatsmylogin hasn't heard many recordings of this piece.

The tempo is pathetically slow.

Apparently she can't play octaves very well .

The downward chromatic scale in major thirds is beyond her ability to play except at half the tempo it should go.

The decorated version of the theme is too slow and she is unable to bring out the theme coherently in the left hand while she plays the chromatic scales.

She should stick to "improvising."

Definitely not up to the task here..

Ciao ciayko. Lo so. Sono anche un gran fan della superba Callas e come lei, nessuna, ma Gabriela rappresenta per me una eccezzionale artista dell'arte musicale.

@luiscar89 Hai perfettamente ragione. Gabriela è una grandissima pianista per quanto rigurado il classico". Poi, per l'improvvisazione, è unica....non capirò mai perchè alcuni (marxcopoco) si permettono di criticare in maniera così acerba ogni esecuzione, dandosi arie di grande esperto (le ottave non vanno bene, il tempp è troppo lento e così via). Invece io apprezzo moltissimo la limpidezza di ogni sua esecuzione, senza ricerca di effetti eccessivi ! Come lo avrai capito, sono anch'io un fan!
