What's unusual about this? You need to visit black families more. I was helping in the kitchen by 8 yrs old, cut my own chicken to fry by 10, doing the laundry by 12. In my family and families like mine you are expected to pull your own weight as soon as possible.
In the U.S., this is considered "child labor" and kinda taboo. Frankly, I'm not even sure when they are officially allowed to do chores, for fear some crazy cat lady will call CPS and have your kids taken away. I have him 4 year old help me carry stuff out to the trash (ie. plastic bottles for recycling) and I teach him every chance I get on the importance of doing things right.
I would be best if kids go to school first, but in a society like Laos, the infrastructure sadly doesn't exist.
@jephboy great example .i tell my daughter ur going to have to wash dishes and mop and sweep and she looks at me like im from outer space . terrible . shes still going to do them! lol some woman dont even know how to fry an egg because there mother was to stuck up to show them ..my daughter is a princess and she wont do any of that mommy will do it for u .dont want u to break a nail i paid for you darlingggg lmao
when i was little , iused to do that, bec. my mom told me that, i have to know all the household chores like cooking, etc so that it can help me when i have my own family.and it does.(btw,im from the philippines.) my kids grew up in the states but they know how to do household chores, i passed it to them what my mom taught me.
Ua nstuag. This is a wonderful example of the resilience of the Hmong spirit. The Hmong have encountered generations of hardship and yet we live. Beautiful.
My mother did this as a child (she was born and raised in Laos) and now I just drop my clothes off at the dry cleaners... put things into perspective!!!
What a lucky little girl to be able to spend time with her mother learning how to use her hands, and earn a useful place in society. In my country the USA, people have lost the use of their hands through years of exposure to so called modern conveniences.
I am using a washing machine for several months now due to a busy schedual in my garden where I grow food for my family as well as for the food bank. I am building a washing station in my yard and will be posting more videos of how my family uses the land. I have just posted several videos of how to dry clothes, how to make wine, how to cook outdoors etc... etc....
etc. Why as Americans we count our blessings by the 'stuff' that we have? In my view it most of it has been a curse. There are people living paycheck to paycheck and by credit cards, stressed to the point of breakdown (check counselor and psychologists offices) just to have the stuff, and with both parents working outside of the home at that! That is not a blessing. This particular little girl looks well fed and well adjusted. Why feel sorry for her?
Americans call this primitive, and 3rd world. But you know what, I would rather be primitive and 3rd world and happy with the people I love and in balance with my world. Then be ignorant, arrogant, superficial and judgmental to my fellow humans. Destroying the planet, and for what?
Yes, it took the western countries 100 years to destroy our beautiful planet that has been evolve for billion of years. Laos was a country covered with green tropical forest roamed by million of elephants is now home to over 80 million unexploded bombs. So sad!!
To the posters who say that american children are lazy, guess what? They learn by example. How many people 'could never imagine' doing their clothes this way or 'just don't have the time'? As far as people thinking that seeing this little girl washing clothes as 'sad', why? We hand wash our clothes and my children 3 and 9 love to stomp the tar out of them. I had a washer and dryer and I will never use them again! They damage the clothes, expensive to repair, run up the electricity bill,
how sad how the hmongs in lao is..... these hmong youth in usa isnt anything compared to these even myself. I hope we can do something and bring the hmongs from laos here in the usa.

Since then we repaired our washer but we have kept the clothes line. I do'nt think having to wash your own clothes is sad. That's very nieve. You can still buy scrub boards & bar soap for laundry here(America)in Farm Supply stores. Its time consuming & rough on your hands but we kept the clothes line & cut our energy bill by $25-$30 a month. While the little girl in the video is very cute;I think it would be sad indeed for her to stink because she thought hand washing was beneath her!

I'm an American. I've been to college. We have 6 children: 4 pregnencies, 1 set of twins and 1 adoption, Ages 2-15. Our washer broke 4 months ago and our dryer broke 3 months ago. We put up a clothes line out in the back yard and HAD to wash our clothes in the Bathtub. We do own a scrub board & My wife did most of the work but the children took turns walking the clothes in the tub too. We just did what we had to do. We didn't have the money to take the clothes to a Laundry or dry cleaner.
If our kids in USA work hard like this girl in the video then our parents should be proud of us, but instead the kids here are so lazy and never listen their parents.
daily life in laos is tough but it's simple living. daily life in america seems nice but it's a little more complicated than u think. u have to earn money for everything. if ur hungry u have to find a job, earn money go to the store and buy food. in laos if ur hungry u can go to the garden, go to the back yard and grab a chicken for dinner. same for a house and land, etc. not to mention temptations in america as someone commented. GANGS! pointless and dangerous but ppl give in.
aww, she's cute! i've been reading these comments and yeah people have it bad there but hmong in america struggle too!!! struggles everywhere. "life perfect ain't perfect if you don't know what the struggle's for"
pros and cons for everything in life even if you live in america.
that sad ...that little girl know how to help her mom washing clothes and i think that very sad..hmong peoples always work hard over there to get what they needs. sweet...
ooh that very sad to me and i know how hmong peoples over thea. they work hard to get foods and money. i wish i can help you peoples if i have alots money...
ugh.. yah... people washed clothes by hands back in the days... yah.... smart. but i feel you. that's why im here in college...working my way there to help them in need. thanks.
see how all these hmong kids born in the US dont do chores like this anymore. Insted they grow up and wanna be gangstas and forget how hard it was back in our homelands. Daym I sound like my DAD now, but our parents were always right and we never beleived them

Most kids in the USA today are to lazy to get some food out of the refrigerator and make something to eat.
Thank you for posting this video Peter!
I agree with your comments on the right.
