@griffinde well I'm not an expert or anything, but there are different accents for different parts of England. Sean Bean HAS a northern accent (he's from Yorkshire) but usually when I see him in movies he uses a southern English accent. But since Ned is from the north and they make such a big deal about that in the book, I'll bet he was excited to use his real accent. This is all pure conjecture.

@LeaveItToPsmith English accents are incredibly diverse and varied. A few miles can make an immense difference but the Yorkshire accent is deemed rather base and rough because we drop many letters in our words. "Go to the house" would be more like Go T 'ouse. I agree with griffinde that to use the coarse language of the north is most fitting, and suits Sean far more than his poncy put on accents

I get the feeling the voice saying "winter is coming" is supposed to be more a narrator's voice, and you're not really supposed to think of it as Ned speaking, even though he is. More like the evil omniscient voice that knows evil is coming in the winter and they're all going to suffer.

Characters' conflictions, desires, etc., are conveyed in the books easily because we're directly told what the characters are thinking and how they feel about things. On a screen, some thoughts and feelings can be hinted at through mannerisms and interactions with others, but I doubt the viewers will completely grasp the internal struggles of original depthly characters like Tyrion. Even if they do a fantastic job, we who have read the book are bound to be a bit dissappointed.
