yeah , man..,.. that was the good ole' days huh?.....LOVE THIS ALBUM..!......I also love those Thai Stricks...!...hehehe..along with all other decent dope..!...yes, how cheap.. it used to be... then....there's the WoodStock days....Peace,.. love...... & No War ....or harm to anyone....along with such music wonders....as Janis Joplin....etc.,
it blows my mind how versatile a musician Dan Hartman was. He could do heavy rock like this, classic disco like "Relight My Fire", country or pop, soul like the music he produced for James Brown and Little Richard, he could do it all. I miss him and his music a LOT.
According to the liner notes in the cd and the vinyl, Dan Hartman wrote the song, sang the lead vocals, and played all the guitars. Edgar Winter played ARP ('70s synth) bass and Chuck Ruff played drums. Rick Derringer, while he did play on the album, did not play on this song.
I have a promo copy (for radio stations) of this LP with DJ notes: "Sounds almost exactly like Led Zeppelin." Have worn through the vinyl to the mat on every album by both artists, I have to say I don't strongly agree except it's heavy metal rock, which LedZep perfected. This song doesn't slow down at all as many Zep tunes do. No specific Zep song is being modeled, and that drumming (the only thing on the song not done by Dan Hartman) sounds not like Bonham at all IMHO. This is Dan at his best
Although I agree with your premise that no specific Zep song is being modeled, There are many spots where there is a fleeting feel of Zep on this tune. In all of the instruments individually, the vocals and in certain combinations you find yourself thinking Led Zeppelin and then the moment has passed. It's definitely there or so many people wouldn't say so.
I was working at recordplant in 74 when they were recording this album,Shelly Yakus
at the console and produced by Rick Derringer. These guy's came into the studio
dressed like they were going to play the garden,They were what the music biz and
the word Rock Star mean,Dressed it and lived it and Edgar{a showman in everyday life] Dan hartman a boy wonder,When I heard him play guit I was floored.
it's REALLY hard to believe that the man who wrote and sang this heavy metal stomper also wrote and sang the disco classics "Instant Replay" and "Relight My Fire" and the rap/soul "Krush Groove". But that's how versatile a performer Hartman was. Bet he would have become one of the most successful writers and producers in history if he'd stuck around.
Contrary to the information Box ~ Not only did Dan Harman write this song, but he sang lead on it, played lead guitars on it, Bass guitars on it, And I think He EVEN did the drumming on it.
@rickyon Well, I'd heard that Dan was making demo tapes all the time and submitting them to record companies. Rick Derringer said Dan was one of the most talented guy he'd ever met. He said "Free Ride" was just like the demo that Dan had made of it, and that Dan played everything on the demo. Dan was a super talent, so sad he's gone...Thankfully I got to see him live a few times with the EWG with RD.
Chuck Ruff played the drums and Edgar Winter played the bass. The info box was a list from the album info on Wiki. My current info comes from the liner notes of the CD and Vinyl.
It was '74 or '75 - Edgar and Johnny Winter along with Dan Hartman doin' it live for almost 3 hours. Free Ride, Frankenstein, R&R Hootchie Koo and this one. Ticket $4, Thai Stick $10, Mesc $3, bus ticket $1 - the evening was priceless. I saw Uriah Heep and Santana the same month. All for less than the price of parking today !
I remember those days as well. Except I didn't purchase a bus ticket, and I didn't see Santana though. Those were the days, Cheap Thrills. Uriah Heep with Mesc, was a treat, so was Johnny Winter.
Nothing to do with Led Zeppelin. I have this vinyl and there are great musics like " Miracle of Love " and "Easy Street". Shock Treatment is a good album ...

You aren't listening close enough if you don't hear a little Zeppelin throughout this whole song!

@rickyon I thought 'Zeppelin' the first time I heard this song and I STILL think it sounds like 'em
