It depends on the state. In some it is only the currently incarcerated who are prevented from voting. Owning a firearm is a different story.

As a "felon" I can assure you that you can't vote. However 7 years after the initial conviction you can attempt to get your conviction expunged which costs a SHITLOAD of money and under certain circumstances not even possible.
So you basically you can't vote if you have ANY felony conviction.
