To Balen3 - AWESOME to have numbers behind your name - and really - are you any different in your own self than when these great songs were first in the air? My body (and maybe yours too!) begins to disappoint the expectations, but my mind, heart and soul are able to appreciate the good things in life --- like Ella :)
Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole rule this song! No one can compare and it is one of those rare occasions where I really like the song sung by two different, though fine singers.
@YusufAlaseeri be assured you are not. :) I turn 21 in less than a month, but have loved Ella Fitzgerald, Frank SInatra, etc, etc, etc for years and years - ever since I was a little girl, thanks to my parents. I also have friends my age who love their music, too. However, I will agree with you that more young people should listen to and love these true musicians. This is music and artistry, not the rubbish one usually finds on the radio.
Oh how right everyone is to say that Ella together with Nelson Riddle Where the GREATS, How lucky we were to have been born when we were, to have enjoyed MUSIC I feel for the young now, as all they have is Noise for music. We had all the Greats. I am 81 years old, and now use You Tube on while doing other things.
@balen3 I wish I could've enjoyed the music from this era and been born during that time...but I'm glad that the music is still around. I listen to ella everyday..her voice is so soothing
@balen3 right on! i'm 20 and i grew up with my grandparents and my parents - a father who was a music major. i was quite lucky to be exposed to my grandparents music and my dad's expansive music knowledge. i was the girl growing up on everything from Mozart to glen miller to the chubby checker and Elvis. it's true - most music today lacks style and class. my college roommate has a lil wayne poster. i don't know if we're going to see eye to eye on music.
Sarah V, and Ella F, they have to be the all time best female vocalist! (in jazz) Opera is another story! Billy H, was ok for Sensation, but i couldnt listen to her all day!
Ella is the gold standard against which all other female singers are compared. Her interpretations are perfect, and her voice is pure smooth silk....I have yet to hear another like her. We are so fortunate that Ella's golden age coincided with the golden age of jazz musicians and the invention of those wonderful condenser microphones that made the sea change of difference in the sound of recordings in the late 1940s.
hehehehe, I am laughing at the comment of someone saying that he or she was surprised of Ella's cool. I am a young man, and I think Ella can show cool to a lot of people. Ella es to the cubans like sugar, coffee and Rum. What a voice, It is very hard to describe, however I will try. Ella is like the air, you don't see it but you feel it.
Thank you so much for posting this! I'm singing this to my fiance at our wedding reception in September. It is the first song he saw me preform in competition back when we were teenagers and had just started dating. I wanted to add some Ella flare to it this time. She's my idol! There simply never has and never will be anyone with her talent!
What a joy to listen to! The late great Ella is my favorite female singer of all time. And this is one of my favorite Gershwin numbers. A match made in music heaven! THANK YOU VERY MUCH for sharing it with us! You've made my day & my week! :)
From 1959, what a gem! (Ella and the song). I have a playlist for every year of pop music back to 1900. These 110 playlists let you travel back in time to the music of any year you choose, as if you're back at that very time . . . . . . . . . . . . .
@shinybear I love Ella, and Love everything Verve puts out, I have SOME Verve albums including albums with Ella on them, but i have none of the ones pictured in the video! ;-(
This is the best of the best, no one today can compare to the voice. The style is unbelievable, that is why it is so good. She is in a class by herself, no one can compare to the reliable Miss Ella.
glomur, you are soooo right. Most can't come close to such perfect pitch like Ella. The only exception was Sarah Vaughn...and even she didn't sing this one like Ella. Ella made it all her own.
What a wonderful arrangement, I love this song but I've never heard this version before, Nelson was a huge part of this era and without him Frank, Ella and so many others would have missed out on some golden moments he brought to their careers, thanks for posting, is there a live video version of Ella doing this arrangement does anyone know?
There was Nelson Riddle then there was everyone else. He forever changed the popular vocal arrangement/orchestration to a new, modern standard. The word that always comes to mind when I hear a new Riddle chart is taste--such outstanding taste in every facet of his work. I have heard 3,4, and 5 versions of the same song with different singers and each time Nelson brought something fresh to the arrangement. I wished he had lived to see the acclaim his work so deserved.
Can I just say that I first heard you grandfather in the early fifties with an orchestral arrangement of the French nursery rhyme, Freres Jacques, which was called Brother John and I was hooked.
Then came Songs for Swinging Lovers, A Swinging Affair and a host of others which were to form a magical partnership with Old Blue Eyes. A great talent indeed
Ella was at her very best when singing w/Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra.
Check out the 6 albums they did together. My fav is "Ella and Nelson Swing Brightly". Note: Nelson was my grandfather. He passed in 1985. His music stands the test of time!!!
Thanks so much for your comments. Nelson Riddle is my all time favourite orchestrator, Ella my favourite singer. They certainly were a great combination and very good friends, too. I remember that Ella attended your grandfather's funeral in 1985. Thanks again. YOu must be so proud to have had Mr Riddle as your grandfather. A truly great talent.
Your grandfather and Ella made magic together. And he proved he still had not lost his touch later on when he collaborated with Linda Rondstadt. Nelson Riddle was a genius, whether he arranged for Ella, Sinatra, or Rondstadt.
@riddleswings WOW! Nelson Riddle is your grandfather! I absolutely adore his music: with Ella, with Frank , Rosemary...he's the best. I was just thinking this morning about how i love the way he often composes a different but complementing melody as an intro or that would run through an arrangement-brilliant! If anyone lives on and forEver, HE DOES. I so appreciate ypur sharing the music. Thank YOU.
I wondered if you could help I heard a song years ago and never found out who it was by but I believe it could be by Gershwin? I think its called supper time??
As someone has stated Suppertime is by Irving Berlin. But there is SummerTime that is by the Gershwins. I didn't know if you just got the names mixed up.
Por mais efêmero que possa ter parecido, veio para ficar, e esperar. Talvez não justamente aqui, mas em algum outro lugar.
