Went there as part of a tour in 98'. The Reds were hosting the Cubs. While it's true alot of history took place there, there was nothing special about it.
I think that they're less cheering at the destruction, and more cheering at the fact that the engineers who designed the demolition did it right, and that the building actually collapsed as designed instead of doing something wonky like standing half-up.
I agree why do people cheer ? This was a ballpark that saw the Reds win 5 Pennats
and Three WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. Two All-Star Games, Aaron's 714 th home run,Perfect Games,No-Hitters,Rose's 4192 Historic Hit and countless other Major League Baseball's historic cornerstone events.
HEY I was on that riverboat! Though I was only about 10 at the time so I don't really remember the demolition but I sure as hell remember the stadium. I always thought it was funny that rarely ever did you see anyone in the red seats on the top level. Plus you couldnt hi them out of the park, but now at the great American ball park you can.
i remember as a kid we would travel from ft. wayne to riverfront see the big red machine back in the mid 70's. one time a guy barfed from the edge of the upper deck onto the folks below. good times.
i think the guy cheering the loudest had a mullet, handlebar mustache, a budweiser sleeveless shirt, and was also raising a can of bud the entire time
When Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was demolished, nobody cheered. The Braves had a lot of memories from that stadium including but not limited to Hank Aaron's record breaking homer, 1995 world series game, etc. I almost got a chance to see a game there in 1993 just before I turned 5 but the tickets were sold out I think so we went to Six Flags instead.
I'm sure the Reds have a lot of memories because they have had great teams in the past. No need to cheer.
Funny, but watching this I don't feel like cheering. Old Riverfront Stadium was a special place. It seems wrong to listen to people cheer it's destruction.
This was clearly a terrorist attack, which makes me very suspicious as to why the people there were counting down and cheering. They should have been detained for questioning.
dude y would you cheer i would be kinda said i mean that was were the Immaculate Reception happened this is the 2002 game vs Cleavland when Tommie Maddox took us on that game winning drive to win i mean there were great memories here so why would you cheer?
i don't know. maybe i'm just old school, but it stinks to see some of these old stadiums torn down. riverfront, bush, comiskey. blah. something about it just doesn't seem right.
Well the Great American ball park is a nice park, but River front was a classic, so I am a bit surprised people were cheering. Where do the Bengals play?
I miss Riverfront, the new stadiums are boring and lack character, as bad as Riverfront was aesthetically, you can't take away all of the incredible moments that took place there for 30 years. It's a unifying place Cincinnatians miss.
why would people cheer? i always feel a little sad watching a stadium implode. there are always great memories from those places and the reds had some great teams play there.
@davidbfitz I think they cheer because implosions are so cool to watch! I think the big reason why Cincinnatti wanted those new stadiums for the Reds and Bengals was because River Front was not only out of date, but to everyone else it's the most boring looking stadium ever made! Even the Oldest football fields and Baseball parks still had a nice design, but look at this! It's so bland you would have no idea what played there!
@davidbfitz Because people live in the moment and enjoy life. Listen to that man. he sounds like he's havin a fucking blast. Memories die, and fade away. Life in the moment. The only reason this will be remembered in. say, 50 years is because it was caught on film
The people are cherring because it is basically like watching a live bengals game and to meet some of the players just go to the Cincinnati state penitentiary
I still don't understand people cheering the demolition of a building where they shared so many memories.
I understand progress but if I were there I'd be sad - it would be like watching a funeral or something. To hear jerks cheering would really piss me off.
Thank you! The Big Red Machine, the days of the consecutive World Series Championships were wonderful memories. A VERY expensive stadium was built for a team who now can't hit the broad side of a barn with a cow chip! This IS sad!
The 30 year old Riverfront Stadium needed to be replaced. It was not up to any MLB standard. It was not a ballpark, it was a stadium, made for football and baseball. The place smelled, it was dirty, and outdated. At the time, everyone in Cincy thought it was crazy to build two stadiums. But in hindsight, the right decision for the Reds, Bengals, and really the region.
i was in the front row watching that. very sad.thats the reds best years getting blown into the history books. were i was though most people were crying.
actually, this stadium was finished in 1970, and tore down in 2003... the reason they tore it down is they let the condition go to crap.. we ended up getting two new high tech fields out of it.. and this is shot from the kentucky side, so that explains the clapping... (rednecks love this stuff)... lol
Northern Kentucky is much like cincinnati. This was filmed from covington. I saw the whole thing behind the crowd. This stadium is where I first viewed the amazing sport of BaseBall.
