  • love this guy great infulence to us !!!!!

  • Sounds like shit thanks to 240p.

  • Listen. Sonors sound so great. So, why DW's??

  • *After the video ends, looks over at his set of zildjian cymbals* -_- .... *opens window and dumps them out the window* "Where'd I go wrong.. Sigh.."

  • Being a hardcore drummer who i feel deserves a sponsorship, and as hard headed as i am about simplicity and musical construction :D I have to say no matter what genre your into this guy fricken rips.

  • Excellent sound, excellent technique, versatility, taste, dynamics. MrObsidian has it all. One of great musicians of our time. No wonder he is the first call drummer for numerous sessions.

  • Man, Sonor sound !

  • 240p, we meet again..

  • 4:05 - 4:17

The Victorious Reign? Sorta sounds like it...

  • I miss him on Sonor drums. So much more tone than DW.

  • I wish you had better mic's man!

  • Even the greatest of metal drummers have to have a cowbell! XD

  • 4:48 KILLER doubles!

  • i really wish he would put his toms in decending order not random order >_<

  • @MaggotMuncher96 They are not in random order. He likes his setup that way, toms are in that order for purpose.

  • Damn.

  • the snare have a very smooth and calm sound

  • holy snare buzz

  • More cowbell!

  • 240p quality :(... if it was HQ maybe then i could begin to judge the sound of sonor... shame coz great drumming

  • Roddy is way better than I had originally suspected. I mean I knew he could do really fast 32nd notes but this is something different. It's nice to see & hear! Very enjoyable! Jake_144

  • The 5 star German combo, meinl and sonor.

  • @OFFICIALTHREEHALFS totally agree dude! Gotta love cheap cymbals that sound great!

  • the fill at like 47 was really sick its was very complex and awesome great job

  • And meinl same story what line of meinl doesn't beat out zildjians?

  • Maybe but name a paiste line that doesn't exceed zildjian lines. For example zbt or pst5 alpha or zht/zxt. And so on

  • @rmarc11 hahaha duude i chose a pst5 18 inch over a zildian like a custom hahaha. it sounds ssooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good and it was only 100 bucks :)

  • I love zildjian. U are in denial meinl is sooo much better than zildjian! This guys kit sounds amazing

  • @rmarc11 Its all preferation

By the way, no cymbal sound the same, so I don't see how you can even compare lines, much less whole companies.

  • some innovative playing here!

  • i remember watching this video when i started drumming, wow brings back my memories!

    thanks derek :D

    legend!

  • that cymbal @ 1.03 sounds amazing :)

  • He is really really good, but I somehow dont like his style

  • @strgaltdelete I agree. I think he is one of THE most talented drummers ive ever seen. But im not a fan of his style, although i cant explain why.

  • derek roddy just gained my respect :p

  • They"re not zildjians, thats for sure. But they still sound decent.

  • @ilovezildjian zildjian is no where near as good as meinl

  • I LOVE THE SNARE!!!!!!

  • ARHHH HE'S MINI HAT'S IS AWESOME!!:D

  • love the footwork at 6:27

  • @ooo0ooooooo0ooo i like your user name :P

  • your so fast!!!!!!!

you must have prcticed for hours!!!

  • That kit looks too complicated

  • He uses DW now, I think

  • drumgasm 2:10 - 3:00

  • This shows derek roddy is SOOO MUCH MORE then just speed. :D Fuck haters. lmao.

  • @TheOrisApparatus all metal drummers are more than speed, they all started doing simple 4/4''s. The reason why we, they choose to play fast is simply because thats what we like to challange ourselfs in and think is interesting to play. Hell if it wasn't we would play something else. The same goes for other genres. But other genres have a tendencie to complain alot over death metal drummers. And to be honest i have no idea why, don't they see metal as legit form of music?

  • @nonhasthisusername quote from mr. DR: "Everybody's talking about versatility of metal musicians, but what about the other musicians?"

  • @nonhasthisusername However i agree, there are those select few drummers who know nothing but blast. I once did a 6 hour recording session for a black metal band with a drummer that knew nothing other than bass-snare repeating, and didnt know how to do it well. It was the worst six hour of my life, but at least i got paid.

  • He now uses DW collector's series.

  • are you using a gate on your drums, i think i can hear that

  • Wat snare are you using?

  • Sonor and meinl is the best combination since man and woman in bed

  • @AfterlifeBlack but sonor are too expensive.

  • @AfterlifeBlack Both German! :D Well from the third thing, I don't know from where it is! xD

  • @AfterlifeBlack

yep and both are expensive as hell haha :D

  • @ThePretender94 true lol but they are both the best in the world if you ask me.

  • @AfterlifeBlack if you add vic firth and Nerve!!...

  • @AfterlifeBlack i guess derek dissagrees since he switched to dw lol

  • @Killenmachine05 so did my favorite drummer Thomas Lang, they only do because DW is a better sponser and a bigger

  • @AfterlifeBlack or a women and a women then a man, cause you can forget roddy

  • @AfterlifeBlack try tama and sabian

  • @InsaneDrumer18 I like Tama, but the only thing I like form Sabian is XS20's and the Radia cup chime.

  • sounds awesome! specially that left bass used for effects

  • this set sounds bad..

  • And my god I love the sound of that bass drum.

  • @Claggy ive heard way better, its alright, not good for my taste tho

  • Comparing Derek Roddy with Travis Barker is like comparing a death metal vocalist with Britney Spears. Doesn't make any sense.

  • OMG! you got 3 hi hat's 4 pedals and a horsetail!

  • how does he not get lost in all those pedals?? :O

  • what kind of bass drum head do you use?

  • @rawking7732 derek roddy uses a clear pinstripe usually. He also uses Powerstroke 3's, the head in this video may be a stock sonor head similar to a powerstroke 3

  • @quackbeef he triggers anyways so it doesent matter lol?

  • @TheDeniedhopedrummer he's not triggering in this video though.

  • @winner0loser Yeah i play sonor too and the stock UX remo heads suck ass

  • can someone tell me what that cymbal is (i think a stacker) next to his 3rd tom and above his x-hat?

  • isnt he supose to b wif dw now

    sum one tell me!!!

  • @88MapeX88 yes he is, but the video is allmost 3 years old my friend!

  • holy snare buzz

  • Nice snare buzzzzzzzzzz

  • looks like a snake striking when he does his fast shit - and yes he has feel and everything else too

  • you put the floor tom way to far to the right monitor.

  • snare has such a nice sound

  • 3:25. Wow I've never heard Derek Roddy play anything with any kind of feeling in it at all. I have a much higher appreciation for him now. I thought he was all about speed and power. I find nothing wrong with metal drummers, I just hate when drummers ONLY work on double bass space speed, hand speed, and blasting.

  • ok where is that cowbell i am hearing

  • @allmetaliswelcome in front of the snare at the right side

it's hard to see, but it's there =)

  • @allmetaliswelcome upper right side of the snare.

  • why is he making this a tom orientated video especially at the start? isnt a cymbal demo?

  • @themostdirty It's a drum and cymbal demo as the title says.

  • @PhantomSocke my mistake

  • That Snare sounds amazing what is it?

  • 6:28 onwards is simply the end of all drummers, god damn

  • @tamadrummer listen to Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. Or Dave Weckl. THEY are the end of all drummers xD

  • Derek: Please do u vid of a sick ass beat !

  • so let me get this straight, if a really good drummer had the "worst" pedals. and did exactly the same, that is by some ridiculous technicality, makes him a better drummer?...... you guys are dipshits...

  • I personally think its impossible to compare drummer to drummer. Danny Carey has amazing chops and imagination as does Derek Roddy. I think we get to caught up in who is the best. Lets just sit back and enjoy, both guys are amazing.

  • this isn't danny carey dumb fuck ha it's derek roddy

  • I've never seen Danny Carry play a mix this well, not taking anything from him but anyone that puts this down is speaking out of pure jealousy.

  • These drums sound amazing. Sonor sure makes a quality product.

  • that snare sounds niiiiice

  • this video got me into derek roddy, but theres probably nothing here that danny carry cant play, except the third mounted tom. These two are kings of craft.

  • @dsleeperhold derek doesnt posses any skill that anyone anyone could work up to. meaning that anyone could be this good if they practice enough. I personally dont like danny just because i dont think he is as good as people say he is.

but again with derek, drummers all over the world could be as good or better than him with enough practice.

  • @TheStockzzz So what? Anyone can play anyone's material. YOu tube is chock full of people covering carbon copy's of everything...That's not the point, what he's playing here he WROTE, and that's why good musicians get the credit they deserve...

  • wow! what a waist of time.

  • wow! great vids but how many hi-hats and x-hats does he need lol but great sounding kits and cymbals. i'd like to know where the cowbell sound is coming from part way through

  • @SadeofDarkness He's got a clave and a wierd noise maker thing down on the left side on pedals I think.

  • I wonder what a tool record would sound like if Danny Carey switched to a DW kit... AMAZING!

  • a great video that really showcases his diversity, been a huge fan of roddy since nile

  • Can someone explain what he is doing with the bass at 4:50? Is it going consistently? It sounds strange.

  • Double strokes.

  • this man is a beast!!!

  • my dick just melted off.

  • guys guys each to their own, some people like dw some people like sonor. and if it must be said alot of people have issues with the sound of dw kits. more so than professional sonors. and sonor's top end kits the SQ2 is alot more sought after than dw kits. also with concern to drummers why are you bringing up dave grohl and the rev t ocompare to derek roddy? dont kid yourselves. dave grohl is a standard rock drummer just like travis barker or whatever. the rev was ok but nothing on roddy

  • nobody should ever have to knock a video. really, all they're doing is knocking themselves.

  • the second snare sounds great

  • Beautiful foot work.

  • @dwdrummer1991 You are fucking retarded

  • Why? Because I have good taste in drums? I'm glad D.R. decided to leave Sonor, he made an excellent choice :)

  • @dwdrummer1991 He left Sonor because of difficulties with availability, not the quality of drums. I will discuss this no further, your stupidity was alredy proven on the PDF.

  • what does he use now?

  • Wow you're dumb. Also, there is no 'AA' in Meinl. That is the stylised 'M' logo.

  • zildjian? zildjian? that has to be the most generic response to any other cymbal company being mentioned at the time... more like try PAISTE. masters of many alloys and sounds. not just A and K

  • Yes, the drums were EQ'ed. Oddly enough, Roddy regularly performs with EQ'ed and altered drum sounds. Would you demo an electric guitar without plugging it into an amp?

Sure, you can say you don't like Sonor drums, but suggesting that they "suck" just destroys any credibility to your statement. If anything, people are less likely to buy DW now because of your shitty comment :D.

  • Bullshit, everyone knows DW makes great quality drums and have reason to cost $3-4K a kit. Sonor just likes to try and rip people off with their beginner quality drums that are only slightly better than that Pearl Export garbage, if at all.

  • coming from someone with DW in their name...

  • Is it a crime that I believe in the product that I play?

  • no but everyones sick of ur lil bullshit of how (in your view) DW is soo much better than Sonor. Why would u start a fight in the first place saying stupid things like "Ya sonor is beg-quality while dw pwns" obviously if ur brain isnt the size of a walnut u'd kno someone would go "hey not really". So stop critizing other drum companys just cus u think DW is the best

  • ok well asshole DW is wayyy better than Sonor and that is a FACT not just my opinion. Name some high profile drummers that play Sonor? I'm guessing they don't even compare to the likes of Neil Peart, The Rev (R.I.P.), Dave Grohl or Tommy Lee to name a few. If you think Sonor is so much better that's your personal preference but don't blame me when your skill, if any, is masked by your shitty ass beginner-sounding set.

  • rofl...just cus great players (Neil Peart and Dave Ghorl the other two are B) play it doesnt mean that its a good drum making company. and nah my skills are fine at drums not beg, why dont u post a vid of urself drumming if ur gona diss other people hmm?

  • i didn't say you were a bad drummer i just said that you were gonna sound like a bad drummer with a cheap ass beginner's set priced at $9,000. and I have plenty of videos, if you would actually click the link on my name, you would know that.

  • Oh uhm Thomas Lang, Danny Carey, Steve Smith and Phil Rudd (even tho he isnt really a great drummer still he's just one of my favs cus his style and how he is a rythm machine)

  • well of course Derek plays Sonor, which alone sets the bar pretty high...

    Then we have

Gavin Harrison, not the worst drummer either.

    Tomas Haake..

But I agree DW has better sound...

  • Danny Carey, this guy (Derek Roddy), steve smith plays sonor, now go eat your shit, Danny carey is the best.

  • @Meatlooaf Actually, it was announced on Derek Roddy's forum itself that D.R. has decided to swtich to.. (drumroll please) DW. Better quality drums, better artist relations department, and he will be joining one of the more revered drum rosters in the company, where he belongs. Thomas Lang is another great drummer who decided to ditch his beginner kit for the real thing (DW) :)

  • @dwdrummer1991

    From Dereks site:

"Reason....plain and simple....very limited dealer base here in the states. That means... less chance of me being in a local store near you.

I love the Sonor company, the people, the vibe. I will always believe in their product. It has been the most difficult business decision I've had to make to date."

I'm sure there are more Pearl endorsed drummers out there than DW, does that make their drums any better?

Derek Roddy is an awesome drummer, on any kit!

  • Well danny carey is still the king of drumming

  • not even. Neil Peart could kick his ass any day.

  • Not really, peart is good, but carrey would slay his canadian ass any day!

  • Neil is one of the best drummers on earth, with one of the greatest minds on the drum set, not to say this guy is not good, but you can't really compare neil's style to his.

  • well hes overrated tbh, i think carrey has a groove engine inside always on when hes playing

  • @Meatlooaf Dude get off Danny's nuts. He's incredible and I love him, but there's a lot in this video he couldn't do....

  • you obviously have never seen VOLTO! live.

  • @EarlMcCrackin well im entitled to my oppionion, danny is king

  • @Meatlooaf why cant u just say ass? is it necassary? no. I actually am american but still...just stop being a prick

  • @ dwdrummer1991

haha Dude, you're taking shit way too seriously. Did you really think you wouldn't find any differing opinions?

When I bought a high end kit, I chose a Sonor Delite over a DW. The DW was just a little more expensive, but I preferred the Sonor's sound. If you're talking about their Force series, yeah, that's mid-level. But trying to shit on their high end series when lots of world-class drummers choose their product? You're fuckin nutty, man. DW is good. So is Sonor.

  • i think u should tighten the snare :)

  • Comment removed

  • The double pedal for his main kick to get the double bass sounds even i guess. And I guess he uses his second kick as a "side"kick for different sounds and grooves. I think he likes to play open with like a two-in-one kit configuration.

  • left 18" right 22"

  • stupid question. go die.

  • Sonor makes the best factory heads. Snare sounds great to me.

  • he made it seem like he was going into a poly-rhythm in the beginning.

  • Comment removed

  • great druming . .but that snare sounds horrible !

  • sonor and meinl.. drool

  • If i were Derek I would have swapped the two bass drums around and put a left footed axis double pedal on the left and the sonor pedal on the right, so you can use your right foot on both drums.

But Derek's smarter and builds up foot independance.

  • love the jazzy sound in his left bassdrum

  • wat kind of drumheads are those?

  • @Genecidedrummer

    i totally agree.

even shannon lucas frum the black dahlia murder. even though thats my favorite band of all time. roddy is just absolutely retarded at the drums man. hes a beast!

  • RODDY is one of my fav metal drummers and he has groove like no other metal drummer has.

  • i would absolutely love to see those fags that worship drummers like travis barker faces after seeing this, or perhaps their faces after a good ol' duel of thunder between roddy and barker. Im pretty sure if derek went first travis would probably leave within the first 10 seconds. BTW i am fully aware these two drummers are not even comparable. Just saying.

  • @Genecidedrummer Yea, that's kind of like saying those who worship the ramones should be insulted by dragonforces guitar riffs, haha. It's just a matter of personal taste, but yes, I get kind of annoyed when I see people crazy over Barkers drumming; that's just his style though, this isn't. I like this video though. I wanted to hear this set so I can get it for my studio. I bought a Sonor 2003, but I'm looking for an upgrade. This would be a huge one I think. Pearl Reference Series seems good 2.

  • @Genecidedrummer do you really believe that travis deserves a duel against derek?

i mean he sure sucks but, it's not good enough to see derek make a little effort against that crap

  • @Genecidedrummer Why do you have to compare Travis Barker to Derek? There styles are both completely different. However I do acknowledge the fact that Derek is better than Travis, but they are still not compareable at all. Travis' playing style is much more franetic while Dereks is more orchestrated

  • @Genecidedrummer fuckin travis barker fans.. gotta hate em..

  • They sound utterly beautiful, helps that theres an absolute genius playing them too

  • insane

  • what a beast

  • @Longtom33

Not for pattern drumming it doesn't, and besides, Derek is so fast he can jump toms up and down when playing standard rolls, the only reason for having his toms like that is so you can play certain cymbals with high and low toms alike.

Otherwise he would have to buy some more cymbals.

  • Actually the reason he has his toms that certain way is so he can work on his left side coordination quite a bit more, and also because of space problems like he said in his dvd.

  • @Blasting712

Yea he did say that yes xD

But still, it makes certain patterns much easier to play if you can go back and forth like that.
