Tony...this was so gorgeous. You certainly pass on your passion for playing and love for the music. A complete joy to watch and listen to you. :-) Thank you for sharing. ~Janie
I love Jobim's stuff! I think these guys would all be very very pleased with this video. Once again, beautiful playing! I'm taking classical guitar lessons this year at school. Hopefully I will be playing stuff like this someday!
Pure Art and beauty, I love these harmonies, adventurous, fantastic composition, Brazil sure has so much to offer in terms of musical pureness and inspiration and you're picking out the Gems Tony, great work, listened with great pleasure,Vic.
There is an amazing solo guitar arrangement of "Amparo" by Carlos Barbosa Lima. The Jobim arrangements from his Jobim and Gershwin CD were transcribed into a book which I think is still available. They are all incredibly beautiful but also incredibly difficult to play. Thank you so much for all the music you have shared on youtube.
Yes, CBL's version is nearly impossible for us mortals. I could have sworn at first that it was an overdub duo arrangement. But no, that's one incredible musician. He alters the piano arpeggio rhythm just enough to play the full melody legato. I only try to give an overall impression of the piece especially the melody (and i'm not knocking it, i think i did it pretty well). But with Carlos, we're talking a whole nuther league! Thanks.
These are the interesting things happening on the Tube, fantastic piece, Jobim, you can't go wrong, the maestro of great theme's and harmony. Fantastic playing and very creative chord voicing, among your best work Tony, that's for sure, please check out my little theme called "Orleans Funk" (with some nice outside lines) tell me what you think Tony,Vic.
I just started watching your videos but I appreciate the fact that you into music as much as you are, its a hobby but more than a hobby at the same time
Another stunning interpretation... I'm always amazed with your renditions!
I was wondering the other day if you've ever heard of Cartola? He's considered the king of samba, and has a very inspiring story. His lyrics are beautiful, and his harmonies too. I recommend O Mundo é um Moinho, Aconteceu and Peito Vazio. They're my three favorite songs by Cartola.
HI, Yes, Cartola was one of the great and under appreciated (at least in foreign parts). I read his biography, in fact, back when I was studying portuguese. "...Moinho" is one of my favorite songs of his. (see chamacojesus doing his version on yt) I have 2 or 3 cd's of Cartola but it's been a while since i listened. On one, it's just him and a guitar and he's telling stories in between each song. It's called "Documento Inédito". Check it out, if you don't have it already.
I'll check chamacojesus's version! Yes, I've heard it, it's beautiful. I really recommend his 4 albums: Cartola (1974), Cartola (1976), Verde Que Te Quero Rosa, and Cartola 70 Anos. They're four of my favorite albums. Of the three songs I recommended, Aconteceu isn't one of them, I got confused with Acontece, from his first album! Hahahahaha. To me, he is among the greatest composers of all times, without a doubt. A true poet and genius.
Muito gostoso fechar os olhos e ficar te escutando Tony...

It's a chilly day in Seattle, I've got the fire going and I'm listening to your interpretation of Jobim's 'amparo' thinking "Que delicia de arranjo...Que bonito!"
Mônica Salmaso (and Grupo Pau Brasil) recorded a cd whose all songs are composed by Chico Buarque. There is a version of "Olha Maria" and I adore Nelso Ayres and Paulo Belinatti work on that song - so well played, such a beautiful arrangement.
I've never heard this one before, thanks for introducing it to me. I listened to the links on your blog, and this arrangement seems about as close as you could get with a solo arrangement, good job. You should get it published.
In my first comment I didn't say anything about your version because it's obvious, but...: you did a great work.I'm listening to this over and over since you posted. :)
I respect you so much Tony. This is so beautiful and hard to do well but you pulled it of perfectly. I am not so familiar with the piece that I can say anything about other (better) versions, but yours made me go listening for other recordings of this piece. Very intense!
Thanks, Peo. I blogged about it a bit. tonyrclef dot blogspot dot com Definitely check out Milton's live version with Tom at the piano and the original Chico Buarque studio version. I hear now that Barbosa-Lima arranged it (and presumably recorded it) a long time ago and now that recording will be my new Holy Grail! :D cheers.
I always admire your memory. So complicated arrangement and you remember it without any problem. Jobim is a great composer and I'm happy that you arrange his compositions!
Great performance of this truly beautiful song. I can only imagine all the work that went into arranging this piece. FYI, we must not forget another 1982 arrangement of this song by the great Carlos Barbosa Lima.
ah, you see, i didn't know about that. now i hope i can find it. a lot of his back catalog is lost in back closets of international licensing agreements. i saw him once and have several of cds and even some LP's. I can only imagine what he is able to do with this song. Hit it right out of the park, I'm sure. thanks for the info.
actually it wasn't as hard to find as i thought if you're speaking of the version of "amparo" released in the US on "Plays The Music Of Antonio Carlos Jobim And George Gershwin". I know he's a miracle worker but i'm almost certain that's a "self duet" overdub recording. I only heard the little 30-second sample. I'll find a purchasable version somewhere and listen closer. thanks
troubleclef:Your ten thousand plus hours of heartfelt practice and dedication are clearly apparent.Given the billion plus aspiring guitarists world wide, your talent and skillful interpretations are exceptional. Thanks for your continued generosity.
interesting, Daniel Levitin estimates in his book "your brain on music" that it does take 10,000 hours to master an instrument. so i'm definitely not there yet, but then age is starting to interfere as well.
So compelling, gentle, delicate and emotion filled. I adore Bossa Nova and Samba, but this is so much more. Brazilian tinged, classical art of the highest degree. Thank you for taking this on and performing it so wonderfully.
Nah, as far as I know it's still for sale. No nibbles yet, either. I had a couple of really good options for Halloween tunes both of which aren't ready yet...so they'lll have to be spooky thanksgiving numbers! :D thanks! I like the Bach/Gounod "Ave Maria" though I'd say it's maybe better represented in so many places that i'd be hesitant.
Once again you come out with something awesome. Attention to timing, let it ride rather than lock it in, was one of the features I really liked. Cool Trouble!
thanks. it felt right anyhow. then when i watch Tom and Milton live doing it, they take liberties as well so, why can't i?.....(but of course if you're the composer (Tom) you can take as many liberties as you like, right?)
@troubleclef. It's like this: A lot of people can't stand Frank Sinatra's singing. But when I hear him do the standards like "Fly me to the Moon," I appreciate the phrasing, the tempo, the way he can cut a note or draw it out and still be in synch with the orchestra. All the greats can do this on their chosen instruments from voice to guitar etc. If everybody played music according to a strict time signature, It might as well have been played by a robot. Love what you are doing.
Clasical guitar makers should pay you .. You inspire people to want one to play like you do. If I lived near you I would be begging you everyday to give me a few tips. But in a way you already are giving us all these tips. Your videos unlike others show clearly what you are doing. I can't watch the one note at a time with tab videos .. I get very little from them .. I have ears and eyes .. just play if and let me see both hands and i'm fine .. Many many thanks to you.
