The Hamas leadership has specifically stated that the rockets are intended to kill civilians. Why else would you fire off an unguided rocket. Hamas fighters and suicide bombers have repeatedly targeted Israeli civilians in cross border attacks.

The blockade was a response to Hamas firing rockets into Israel and other deplorable behavior. Egypt has also blockaded Hamas, but you failed to mention that.
Hamas hasn't used cluster bombs or white phosphorus, but they have used suicide bombers to attack horrible places like bakeries and its fighters have massacred Israeli civilians, including schoolchildren.

Is it worse to intend to kill people with unarmed, unguided rockets that fail over 99% of the time -- or to in fact kill 1,400 people with advance military armaments?
The blockade was immediatley put in place when Hamas was elected. The significant rocket fire did not begin until the blockade -- and was stopped during the 2008 ceasefire despite the fact Israel failed to live up to their agreement and ease the blocakde.
There are NO significant open spaces in gaza and Gaza has NO military

The blockade by Israel AND Egypt (which has been hit by 0 rockets) was in response to Hamas's violent take over of Gaza. And if the rockets are a response to the blockade, then why hasn't Egypt been targeted?
And the blockade was not total. Israel did let in food and aid convoys.

The Israeli's if push comes to shove can escalate warfare to its most unimaginal level versus any advisary and deliver them a devistating blow. Pretty easy to explain. Hamas fires rockets into Israel for years until Israel finally acts to protect it's bombarded civilians. Hamas fire from densely populated areas, hides their ammunition etc in schools, hospitals, whatever and when Israel roots out the vermin Hamas' meat shield takes part of the brunt of the attack too so Hamas can leverage the situation in the media and sucker idiots into blaming Israel.
