  • Personally I am not surprised to learn that he was not awarded the 1st prize int the Chopin Warsaw Competition. His playing is certainly technically awesome but it lacks a great amount of poetic rubato so needed in Chopin. This ballade is a great example............. the opening bars just notes............... and the rest is pretty much note perfect but really does not sing musically ................. I find the same to be true with the recording of the Sherzo................

  • Wonderful.

  • am i the only one who was like SHUT UP LADY at the beginning ???

  • LASTIMA QUE LA INTERPRETACION DEL SEGUNDO CONCIERTO PARA PIANO Y ORQUESTA QUE HIZO SULTANOV EN EL CONCURSO CHOPIN FUERA QUITADA DE YOUTUBE

  • there are some little things in his interpretation which are curious and not in the chopin tradition. Sometimes a little cold overvew of whats happening in this piece, the heart seems to be missing in that moments. But nevertheless this pianist keeps our attention. He was too intelligent to be ignored. He can be compared with Horowitz and Cziffra. Its the same level and struggle for success.

  • god shut up woman

  • The jury failed Alexei in 1995 just as it failed Ivo Pogorelich in 1980 (eliminated in the 3rd round, with Martha Argerich resigning in protest)

  • Гениально!!! Гений фортепиано!!!!

  • Sultanov...

    R.I.P.

  • one of the few modern day pianists that understood that some melodies can be hummed rather than sung on the piano. A beautifully structered performance , truly poetic. So sad that one speaks of this youngster in the past tense . The jury that did not award A.S the first price made itself ridiculous and will be remembered as such as long as true talent is cherished.

  • very mediocre performance

  • It is a matter of taste. He did rush a bit.

  • The thing that really annoys me about youtube is that any hint of negative the comment automatically receives a million stars down. This guy's a good player, but far too arrogant sounding. This showed when he refused to accept 2nd place for this competition. What an ass.

  • How can you make a judgement on that dude if he died? There's a littke thing called ethics or ethiquette. He has payed his price for his mistakes. For example in Kazakhstan it is reprehencible to criticise dead in any sort. So think about. He is not a dweller of this sinfull earth no more.

  • It's very easy. I don't mock them because they're dead, that's stupid. But I don't believe being dead relieves yo uof all your imperfections. Everyone always criticises Horowitz and sometimes Richter, two supposedly great pianists, and they're also dead. Anyway, why should we feel sorry for him if he no longer has to suffer this "sinful earth"??

  • Well, its about ethics which you seem to have none. And you defenetly should have respect for dead people and you should not call Alexis "an ass'', for he surpassed you in talent and was a better human being than you. He was remarkable player and can you firmly state that you had any terribly significant achievements in your life? In any field? I do doubt it. He's physical form is gone but the spirit never ever dies. Therefore have a little respect for his immortal spirit.

  • Critisising is one thang but mocking a dead is wrong. For instance I do regard Horowitz as non genius and Richter also. But I still have respect for them and dont say that them asses. I do feel compassion for what has happened to him and I dont mourn his death. It will take a long time to teach a moron like yourself such high matter as ethics. Aprori it would be easier for a monkey to study chemistry that for you to understand my words.

  • Apriori it would be easier to teach a monkey to solve an equation than for you to understand a deapth of my worthy cogitations. Besides Alexis was a better player than Richter or Horowitz. But I still pay hommage to them and regard them as extraordary pianists.

  • what does Kazakhstan's custom has to do with people from different nations having different ideals, moral understandings? If they don't want to criticize people just because they're dead in Kazakhstan, good for them.

  • Are you saying we don't have the right to criticize, say, Hitler?

  • Of course we sympathize with this gone young man.

We don't talk about his death, which many people are not aware of. We only make criticisms of his piano performance wheter good or bad. How he died is not of concerned to people worlds away. We make comments on deceased people of all types all the time, not only of pianists. It doesn't show disrespect if we make comments on his music making. We listened to him wrote opinions and that is a compliment enough.

  • He did die in a terrible torment.

  • I'm very impressed by the Japan concert I listened to tonight: Scriabin 5th, Rach 2nd sonata, Chopin Nocturne op 48. Clear, fresh crisp, unbelievable new angles, attacks and voices you never heard. Is it ever a drag deep down into common mire to hear of the splendid talent stupidly cut short by a stupid blood vessel doing what it dumbly had HAD to do. "Let's give him a stroke and kill him so Sorabji players could live.

  • Incredible polyphony

  • you will never play at his level no matter how much you practice. Let me know when you've posted your own video of this piece. In the mean time, stfu and enjoy this artist's subtlety-his control and choice of voicing throughout this performance are among the best I've heard.

  • you dont know what are you talking about

  • Argerich, master of rushing

  • Desmonddd2002,

Ok, that's your opinion. It is acceptable. You should have said "sucked" instead of "sucks". He is a little dead.

  • id put him next to william kapell as the two greatest losses to concert pianism.

  • im going to poland this week with this ballade

    WISH ME GOOD LUCK :D:D:D:D

  • This is my favourite work of Chopin's. I have been having a love affair with it all my life. I would say every aspect of technique addressed in his etudes can be found here and to all that is added his art of counterpoint so closely aligned to that of Bach. What a wonder! Sultanov's poetry and passion is well suited. It has about it the fragrance of gardenias and the veneer of villas centuries past. I feel like I'm eaves-dropping under Chopin's window at Nohant!

  • I can't believe that announcer talked right over the beginning of the piece! That's the rudest thing I've ever heard...

  • @slobone screws up a recording...

  • Great Job

  • He is my favorite.

  • this is such a cool interpretation!!

  • He is so dark.

  • лучшего исполнения этой баллады я не слышал ни у кого.

  • favorite song by chopin and he plays it just the way chopin dreamed it :D

  • He was brilliant at giving new ideas of old played too often the same way music.Sexiest russian pianist now dead. His career should have kept rising.Always individual and powerful a smaller Richter perhaps.

  • wow.

    wow......

  • he is so poetic
