Hey, I don't even know why people are getting so up tight about this. Its saying that Metallica is an icon, and all of those other bands are there because they love Metallica, and they are playing their songs. It's a tribute to them and, hell, Metallica even showed up and looked like they had a great fucking time. Sure, I don't particularly care for MTV as a whole, but I thought this was great. If you didn't like this, then you either don't truly love Metallica. I say Metallica Forever! ^,,^ \m/

They were obliged to do a performance themselves and wanted to do it with the man who was going to be their bassist from then on, and not some "test-dummy", "only-the-instrument-is-there" guy. It's all shown in "Some Kind of Monster", the documentary made about this 2-year period of the band.
