  • They came here and had a awesome show I loved them before i herd Kurt liked them.

there style is very unique and cool.

  • Not all that original sounding.

  • Two minutes ago I was confused about why three japanese girls are in a nirvana interview. But now i see why, this just put a massive smile on my face.

  • Lets all dance ! =D

  • I like Naoko's sweater :D

  • The dislikers have never found anything new.

They've never had something different in their life.

Also, their opinion is discredited immensely by the fact that they disrespect an insanely cute Japanese girl rocking out like a maniac on the guitar.

  • WOW!!!

  • Cute Asian girls on guitars, bloody awesome! No wonder Kurt liked them.

They're made even cooler by the fact that they planted their own seed and strayed from the norm of their severely pop based culture.

I've only started really listening to them very recently, but already my fascination with that guitarist is bordering on obsession. :o]P

  • @Bendrix27 Her name is Naoko Yamano, the only remaining original member of the current band

  • any one know where i can down load this song? i got 2 of their cds but theyr hard to find. this is my fave song from them and cant find it. it makes me a sad panda.

  • @muaythaijunky Yeah, "Sad Panda", what channels do I follow to find such music? My collection is all basically popular American radio hits... Where do I locate the rarities like this?

  • @chivalryalive The only place I know of to get this song is on the SK compilation CD Millennium Edition Although, this very video can also be found on the old SK concert video Blast Off; if you can find it. (I have seen it and ME on Ebay now and then)

  • These guys did the Powerpuff Girls Groovie on old Cartoon Network.

  • William Gibson introduced me to this band. I have been forever thankful.

  • This reminds me of the 90s.

  • Wtf?!

  • This is the most inspiring thing I have ever witnessed.

  • Knew them cause of Cobain.

  • @waiting4smtin

Same here, was looking at an album of rare pics of nirvana(mostly of Kurt) and one of them was wearing a shirt of these guys.

  • what even

  • If you enjoyed this have a listen to Stheno & Euryale - Valentine

  • oops somehow I forgot to type that the song came out in Japan, in 1997

  • ...am i high?

  • from when exactly is this song? i thought the drummer was dead.

  • @ashitanokioku1 The song came out in Japan on the mini Album "It's a New Find", but, wasn't released to North America until 2000 , on the "Millenium Edition" compilation album.

As for the drummer, Atsuko, she is still very much alive, the dead drummer was Mana "China" Nishiura who played drums for SK on a couple of tours in the early 2000s after Atsuko replaced Michie on the Bass. In 2005, Mana was touring the USA when the tour van rolled and she was killed at the scene.

  • @Shoknifeman You know your Shonen Knife!

  • @mrsolofeo I wouldn't call myself an expert, but, I probably know more about them than the average person...They are my very fave band and I even run a Shonen Knife forum #^_^#

  • I love Japan :)

  • yeah!! it's a new find! be yourself ^^ \m/

  • Quite inspired by Cheap Trick's "He's a A Whore" -- as far as the catchy riffs go. Love the band though.

  • from which album did this song came from? I can't find em on WIki

  • @665885 The English version was only released on the compilation album, "Millenium Edition"

  • It's like the Japanese Cub!

    At least to me...

  • @pianoman930 cub was better than these retards.

  • @TADGELL I wouldn't call 'em retards, but I agree Cub was better.

  • I feel........... SO FREAK'IN HAPPY!!.......

  • the world is full of odd music...

  • LMAO

  • 1 thing I rmember loving about the 90's was the bright colors, sounds stupid but I did.

  • damn, I remember seeing Shonen Knife gig posters when I lived on the west ocast, and one was so cool my friend named his dog Shonen....I never imagined this band would be this cool jajajajaj....that's almost as bad as when Foo Fighters did a show at Harpos for 5$ on a sunday night in Victoria just to blow up the band and hit the locals with the real thing....and I passed jajajaja

  • Kurt Cobain LOVED this band and I'm not kidding

  • @TheDunkaccino so he loved them there a good band and if you don't like them who cared there burning farm album is good

  • @TheDunkaccino Yea because there a GREAT pop/punk GIRL band and thats rare in japan and there old stuff is great all there stuff is.

  • yhank you girsl

  • wait...the bassist is now the drummer? i saw them live and i totally wanted screw the bass player so thats definitely her.

  • @fosponomot No dude they have a new bassist and drummer now

  • The Lead Guitarist and Singer is called Naoko not Atsuko. The drummer, Atsuko is now married and lives in L.A but still performs with them when they play there... The bassist Michie has almost vanished into obscurity which is a huge pity because I want to marry her !!!!

  • @sashimifan Ooops, you're right, of course; I never even noticed that I typed Atsuko instead of Naoko... I guess it's cause I always prefered the younger Yamano sister! haha (I can't believe I made that mistake!)

  • I'm suddenly that happiest person alive.

  • This must be one of the happiest things in existence, past, present or future <3

  • they're old now.

  • @heroiniskindacool Well, the leader Atsuko is 50, but, the other 2 girls (Not the same ones you see here) are pretty young (The drummer turned 21 on the tour last fall!)

  • @Shoknifeman- AKKKKKK!!! I meant Naoko, of course.... I must have been half asleep when I typed that!!!! o.0

  • they rock

  • sashay down the street in platform shoes <3

  • клип ацтой

  • What album is this song on?

  • Comment removed

  • @bambismash It's only on The Millenium collection, in North America.... it was a single, in Japan (When I said Happy Hour, I was thinking of Banana Chips, the song I was listening to a few mins ago #^_^#)

  • @Zatzzo You trying to say this is awesome? kurt was the man

  • @SALTEDHAMSUPERSHOW Go salt your hams and leave us Knife Collectors alone!

  • ^_^ i love this

  • What a shame for those that can't recognize the Honesty of this band. They always make me happy...

  • cute ^_^

  • @Arglactable Don't need talent to be in a punk band. Also, some of us actually like "simple" music and none of the high auto-tuned crap that gets turned out for the mass conformists. If you don't like the song, don't watch it.

  • @Ranaiaen I love how whenever people get defensive it's either their music or auto-tuned crap. Though, FYI, it's possible to make very simplistic music and make it interesting at the same time, amateurishly simplistic, and just generally annoying.

  • They make me happy!

  • They have never been grunge. They sing songs about barbie dolls and their fear of frogs. I think Kurt Cobain liked how they became a success by working hard at achieving their dreams. Plus they're really catchy. They never caught on in Japan because they were deemed too Butch for J-Pop, and are seen as kind of quirky here because they're too perky and sweet for punk and alternative rock.

  • Greatest and cutest band ever!

  • I've been had

  • i hope they are ok in these days best wishes!!!

  • @beachnut82 Yes they are all fine in Osaka, but, had to cancel a scheduled spring tour

  • @ Shoknifeman Kurt Cobain, singer and guitarist of Nirvana

  • @Tataru5117 I know but, I wish people would stop mentioning him on SK vids

  • @Shoknifeman but he still owns big part of SK recognition.not many were aware of this band and with his advertisary a lot of people got in to SK

  • Japanese punk rock chicks rule.

  • like this if you know about shonen knife any other than Kurt Cobain

  • @DarkNeonAngel13 Kurt whoooo??? ^_~

  • @DarkNeonAngel13

    Kurt who?

  • @DarkNeonAngel13 Redd Kross told me who they were.

  • @DarkNeonAngel13 Who cares what got you here whats inportant is that ITS A NEW FIND

  • @DarkNeonAngel13 What if you knew em when you were young then years later you rediscovered em because of Kurt Cobain?

  • Perfection!

  • .__.

  • I can never get over how beautiful Michie looks in this video

  • やっぱ初期がいいよね

  • Shonen Knife, clinically proven to be more effective than Prozac.

  • This band is good. I thank Kurt Cobain for getting me into Shonen Knife, & The Boredoms. That man, really had good taste in music.

  • @Methstories Ah! If you like Boredoms you should listen to Deerhoof or OOIOO.

  • @Methstories lol, i wouldnt even know about thi band if it wasnt for a video with cobain and them

  • I recently discovered Shonen Knife a few days ago and I already love them! I don't know how I didn't know about them... I like Japanese Music and I like Kurt Cobain so how could this have happened?!

  • Greatfull!

  • 26 people apparently have no souls

  • @toejam55 its probably 26 escapees from the nearest insane asylum ;)

  • 29 people know what crappy punk rock sounds like

  • the new find is an old song by the ramones...

  • Sounds pretty much like The KKK took my baby away.

  • check on Youtube a band Afrirampo also japanese girls and they FUCKIN ROCK!!!!

  • this song got me so happy, lol it just made my day

  • hopey loves shonen knife

  • like this if you're here because of kurt cobain

  • @FenderJag95

    Kurt WHO?

  • @Shoknifeman Kurt was the guy who's band's job was to settle down the crowd after Shonen Knife played.

  • @ShonenAltec HAHAHAAHAHA great answer! ;) :D

  • @Shoknifeman how the hell yo not know who cobain is..?

  • @narutofan4l I know who he is...I was sarcastically pointing out that I don't CARE who he is, SK is a great band and I really get tired of hearing about KC on every Shonen Knife post; love the Knife on their OWN merits!

  • @Shoknifeman lol, i see your point XD but Cobain did like them lol.

  • Oh does anyone get any resemblance of Jet's She's A Genius in their guitar rhythms??? I swear it sounds very familiar.

  • A band that helped Nirvana. Underrated :)

  • Fun!

  • @NickComments the name of the song is called (a day of the factory) that's my favorite song by them

  • All I know is Mana was killed in 2005 in a van crash. It hurt me so bad but I'm glad they are still a touring band. I miss her very much. I'm surprised you didn't know this....I love this video and I assume this is not Mana, sorry for the confusion. I should have checked the dates. My bad, I actually thought the band broke up after her demise. I'm glad they didn't!

  • @wolfgangzrx Mana was never a full-time member of the Knife, she was hired to play drums for live concerts only, after Michie left the band in 1999 , when Atsuko (the drummer seen here) took over on bass (On the albums , Atsuko continued playing drums and overdubbing the bass). Mana continued as "support drummer" until 2003 when she quit Shonen Knife to join DMBQ as permanent drummer; on Nov 4, 2005; the band's van was in a rollover accident and Mana was killed.

  • @wolfgangzrx Today the band consists of Naoko Yamano (lead singer, guitar), the only original member, Ritsuko Taneda who took over bass 2 years ago when Atsuko Yamano got married and moved to LA and Emi Morimoto, who took over the drums this spring when drummer Etsuko Nakanishi was "let go" ; they are still touring and making albums, their latest being "Free Time" and the band is as great as EVER!

  • This is one of the all time great Asian girl bands. SK's attitudes, bright colors and styles are second to none. I love these girls and I'm so sad they are gone. The drummer was killed in a van crash in the states while touring here. So very very sad. She is greatly missed by all. God bless her soul RIP.

  • @wolfgangzrx - WTF are you talking about? Atsuko Yamano is alive and well, and still tours with her sister from time to time.

  • @jeliusbeanus

He was taking about another drummer, named Mana.

  • This is one of the all time great asian girl bands. SK's attitudes, bright colors and styles are second to none. I love these girls and I'm so sad they are gone. • This is the cutest thing ever.

Inspiration for Deerhoof? I think so!

  • @vaguelyhumanoid probably, SK has inspired several J-girl bands :)

  • I love Japanese girls, all other girls are poor in comparison :)

  • These guys... (girls) where in the album "Sub Pop 100" but i cant find the track ANYWHERE, it's called "One Day of the Factory". Can someone help?

  • @NicksComments "A Day of the Factory" is from the album "Burning Farm" originally released in 1983 and re-released in 2005 by Oglio Records (You may still be able to find the rerelease in one of the bigger record stores)

  • @Shoknifeman thnx :D

  • @NicksComments You're very welcome :)

  • what album is this on??

  • @rocketshiptothemoon

It's from Shonen Knife "Millennium Edition" album released in 2000. Not sure if it's on any other record or not.

  • i dunno... tbh i'm not a fan. K-pop has better looking girls and more catchy songs IMO. watch?v=m6UfrV-hAiU&feature=player_embedded - like that.

must admit this song is quite lighthearted though.

  • These folks are so much fun - you can't help smilling

  • This is group sounds like Donny Osmond had sex with the Asian guy from smashing pumpkins.

  • Well well this looks familiar

  • um, yeah. i don't get it.

  • i don't get it. people like the band for the girls? i liked them but kinda like the way some people tend to like old movies or records better... they just seem like i guess one of those bands.

  • the guitar riff remembering me to KKK By Ramones hehehehe

  • @telassso yeah, i agree

  • blackscarlet512 listen to the burning farm album and if you cant hear why kurt loved them then your its lose

  • Y'know what's funny is, the first time I ever heard about them, was while reading Ghastly's Ghastly Comic.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then please wait until you're at least 18 years old, or ignore the warning entirely.

  • simple easy listening rock song (remembering with band such Ramones)

    Banzai, salam dari Indonesia

  • 0:45 the drummer is beating them with a stick. A few beers helps to bring this subtle illusion to its true form: drummer is sadistic. Learn from the alcohol, don't fight it. Its a herb, a spice from mother earth.

  • They supported Nirvana in Edinburgh,late 1991...

  • I love this video, I lost track of how many times I've watched it. Its refreshing to see a band sing about the positive things in life and still have fun. Unlike bands in the United States that only focus on bad relationships.

  • Way too cute. Naoko's such a hottie!

  • @robibm2003 Amazingly, shes much hotter looking now, 15 years after this video came out!

  • now this is music!

  • @nymphetaminexx1 Yeah! Bad music.

  • @garretguidry1 burn in hell hater. go watch glee or some gay shits that i know you enjoy watching while jerking off

  • @garretguidry1 fuck you and your gay music taste

  • Very good!

  • Love this!

  • Hah the song is crap but they make it up by being so funny!

  • To Everyone complaining about their sound:

    They were heavily influenced by the The BEACH BOYS(yes, you heard right) and the Ramones ; ~ ;

And not a lot of people like the Ramones, I get it.

But anyways. They've done well to survive so long. you have to be LOVED by your audience or have some tough-as-hell bonds with your bandmates to stay together so long.

  • @MinamiUotani I like the Ramones, I just don't like these idiots. And as far as how long they have been together, maybe it's all they have. A one trick pony can't do anything else.

  • this song is pretty bad, but they're so cut and endearing you can't help but love them

  • @KurdtKobain09 apparently Kurt Cobain loved this band so you probably shouldn't be complaining about how they aren't punk enough. Besides in the early 90s they were way grungier

  • @djazr

Nirvana wasn't punk. But Kurt liked himself some good music! Shonen Knife on the other hand IS punk! really good pop punk-they sound like a fuckin' Japanese chick version on Screeching Weasel for christs sake! especially with that poppy solo!

  • i just heard of this band today and i was kinda sad to find out that it wasnt very good. they could work on their beat....it's not really catchy or something that you would be humming to :(

  • @lorali333 I dissagree with you on all those points, just because they don't sound like everyone else doesn't make them bad, it is what makes them GREAT!

  • @lorali333 I think most of thier fans are men that can't get a girlfriend and for some reason ( known only to them ) think that they would have a better chance with an Asian woman. Pretty sad.

  • @lorali333 Yeah! They suck. And all of these guys that can't get a girlfriend and love this band so much, pretty sad! This band know's they are playing to a bunch of loser's. They are laughing at you!

  • @garretguidry1 Why do you listen to it?

  • wow for punk these guys aren't very...energetic. I'm not saying they're bad, they're ok, but to me punk isn't just music like these guys make it, punk is supposed to be fast, loud and energetic. Like drugs in the form of music. Instead of inserting them into ur blood system, u insert them into your ears :)

  • @KurdtKobain09 They are as much punk rock as Ramones are, in fact they sound very similar. I'm sorry that you won't be able look like a tough guy if you have Shonen Knife in your myspace "bands I like" list , but you can still wear your Ramones T-shirt. coz that's cool.

  • test

  • I put thier songs on a CD and I go around town playing them as loud as it goes, Everyone starts yelling at me, "TURN THAT FU***** SH** OFF!!!!" Thumbs up if you've heard me!

  • @TheRealLarcondos If I had, I'd have been singing right along with them ;)

  • This video shows Michie at the thinnest that I've ever seen her (Her weight fluctuated a lot over the years, but, even she was heavier, she was still adorable)

  • These lyrics are so hilarious! I love their energy. They kinda sound like The Runaways, meet the Stooges, meet Veruca Salt. Badass sound,.

  • Japanese girls, punk rock, jumping around......There is a God!

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone who has not seen this band, It's worth making an effort to go to their shows. They are humble honest people that respect their fans, and always play at 100% with genuine happiness. Naoko has never been better, no matter how old, she just glows in front of an audience. Timeless. Long Live Shonen Knife!

  • Has ANYONE got ANY info on what Michie is doing these days???

  • These girls were sooo affraid when they met Kurt !

    But Kirt loved them !

  • Wow, Naoko looked different in those days.

  • @kittyprydekissme Well, it WAS 15 years ago, after all

  • something like ramones...
