You should put a big elastic or spring to open the valve at a very fast speed, and have like something to pull out on the other side so the valve will just snap open.
It works a lot better if the projectile is inside the barrel. From experience, I would suggest making a thinner projectile with fins that fold flat that will actually fit inside the barrel. Makes it really accurate and opens up a world of possibilities for projectiles.
I helped my retard cousin (edj90j) build a precursor to the cannon he just mentioned. The removable barrel was only three feet long, but we shot an orange golf ball at 100 PSI and it caught backspin. The last time we saw the golf ball it appeared to be headed for orbit. Fun stuff!
Built mine with a 7 ft. barrel about 2 years ago, regularly run over 100 psi, getting over 600 yards consistently. Tip: make threaded, removable barrels. Easier to load, easier to customize for different ammo.
made one very similar but the air tank was ladder shaped to hold more air and all out of 3/4 inch PVC...80-100psi and it fires highlighters like JDAM rockets!!! :-)
first off not a bad design... second i recommend a metal ball valve even tho it cost more it opens easier and faster... third if you use shc 40 which i highly recommend due to it being pursue rated highest you can get at least 100psi in there... i built one of my own and we used all of this and i was able to get water balloons 200 yards and i must say it was ALOT of fun... if you have an questions feel free to ask.
depending on your projectiles it will determine what materials you will use, since they used toilet paper pvc pipe is strong enough, pvc is cheaper, lighter and easier and faster to mould, class D pressure pvc is able to withstand 225 PSI, the only thing i would change is the pvc ballvalve to a metal one with a long lever rather than a butterfly lever,a metal cannon will be stronger but its also heavier and alot more expensive, but if so change the toilet paper projectiles with metal weighted one
just take a propane tank a sauder gun and some copper pipes...it works much better and i can put a bit over 120psi on it just fine. and it is much cheaper aswell and easier to make. :)
i made one with a smaller air tank its about 2 ft long and i have a air compressor and i filled it with 120 psi and i shot a potato about 100 ft its pretty awesome
I just built this but with some changes- instead of having the two side pipes at an angle all 3 are even (but one sticks out by an inch -_-) and I used a metal gas pipe valve so I could turn it A LOT easier.... I went up to 70 PSI and put a smoke bomb firework wrapped in paper towels with duct tape holding the ends together and it went 15 feet and dropped like a stone.... I think I made the air chamber a little smaller but other than that idk what the problem is.... any suggestions?
make pvc rockets so u can put then into the barrel and than wth the weight it will go further and also if u can cut 3 slits into the pvc and make spring fins so as it comes out of the barrel the fins will pop out. so all up it will be more poweerful and go further
Two major problems that you should definitely consider for your next build: The barrel volume should be almost equal to your tank volume. This way, you will use the air in the resovoire much more efficiently. Number two, if you shove things *inside* the barrel you will get an indescribable muzzle velocity increase.
Check out a few of my videos for demonstrations of what I am talking about.
Hmm... I shot a tennis ball about 1,500 feet with only 30psi with my air cannon. Check out my videos. I don't have a video of a range test up as of right now, but I do have one of it being shot thru plywood and cinder blocks and stuff.
i made mine point strait up when i built it and i shoot little solder guys with parachute men they go so hi it takes like 5 secs in til u can evan see them
As others have said, put more psi in it it will hold It unless you did a crappy glue job and the joint will pop. I got mine to like 120 psi and my rocket with no weight flew 4 blocks away and it took me an hour to find it (differant launcher design). Also try putting a LITTLE BIT of curve to the fins and it will be more stable IF you have that problem
Good design, good rocket, great vid!
Kinda like a morter launcher with that launching angle. :)
If u over pressure it will not explode, the plastic will just crack and release the pressure. Crank it up and shove something down the barrel to the very bottom.
You've got 3 or so foot of barrel there so accelerate the projectile and your not using any of it. shuv something down the barrel thats got abit of weight behind it like a golf ball and watch it disspear over those trees in the park lol
Just to warn people also if you go too much psi it will explode. Im not sure whether the valve or the plastic will go first. If the valve goes first then you will get the most psi out of it possible then just replace the valve and you then know the valves max psi range so each time you shoot it after that you will have a limit. But for testing its max psi you should get a muchvlonger pump. As others said please make a tutorial. Thanks!!
The valve is 150 PSI, and the PVC is much higher. Both are graded for pressure as this, so the chances of explosion are slim to none. The most that could happen is the pressure gauge flies off or the pump explodes, but now the cannon itself.
@CALLOFDUTYII Nah, I only have one video on my channel, and it's crappy quality...(damn blackberry...) And you wouldn't even see much if I did make a video with the quality...
you should make the exact same thing only in metal then you will be able to up the psi by alot, more power, more sound and better range. At 55psi that is insane, imagine it a double that psi haha nice job!!
@CALLOFDUTYII the initial kick of the air is what gives the majority of the kick when firing. After a certain point, raising the pressure even by large amounts will only marginally increase performance unless you increase the volume of the air tank.
Lol a ball valve cannon.. I wouldn't call that "super" but w/e floats your boat...
I would rather change it into a sprinker valve or even try making a piston valve cannon :) Anyway I think its good for a first build... suscribe to my channel I have something crazy coming soon...

i just made a simple one of these with the same valve but 40mm and 40 mm pipe
so its just one chamber section with a tyre valve on it and the barrel
i can get it up to 100 psi (limited by my compressor, its not a big one nd i have no hand bike pump)
i can fire golf balls spuds nd stuff at over 300 feet
but i am planning to add a bigger chamber to it
and if mine does blow up just as long as the end cap is not facing towards me ill me fine
