  • "Kermit are you ready for this?" lol

  • word.

  • thank you Sir! now i understand better.

  • Jared, you should put a link annotation at the end of the video to Part 2. It seemed like you alluded to such an annotation, but you never put one up.

  • As always very useful !

    Thanks again :)

  • this guy is so fucking cool

  • i dont know how to do spot metering. Help??

  • @chaseaustinmiller614 press Menu button on your camera, go thru each function, u will find the metering system sooner or later

  • I Just loveeee your videos... I'm still a beginner, and ur videos are really helpful....

    I'm gonna try it.....

  • Hy J was up dude? Jared you are awesome !

  • Why isn't Greg doing any more of these? Have ya'll broken up?

  • why not using flash for fill in? the background still a little OE, i think...

  • For me I using flash with a diffuser and put the flash compensation to lowest. That's for me

  • Say, Jared, what do you make of UV Filters?

  • @JaredPolin I'm new to photography and I thought that you shouldn't shoot into the sun. Are you using any special equipment to protect the camera?

  • @cndoorack9 no, just shooting.

  • @JaredPolin not even an UV filter?

  • @falecomcyber using a UV filter shooting into the sun causes a lot of glare.

  • Jared you should get a 18-55 and shoot with that on the D7000 just for fun and see what you could do with your knowledge and experience, just show you really can do with a simple kit lens that comes with your camera. I don't know about you or others, but I think it would be inspiring.

  • absolutely amazing, something that can never be done on a point and shoot camera.. =)

  • press 9 he sneezes

  • @TheCaptainSiphilas If you switch from Canon to Nikon, you'll have to also buy more lenses on top of buying a new body. If you do decide to go down that road, you can get a Nikon D200 second hand for pretty cheap and the 5 FPS burst rate should do you good. Don't go out and blow all of your money on a body, save it for a lens because that's where you get your image quality.

  • Why dont you make a t-shirt with:

THE POWER OF THE RAW IS WITH YOU

  • Does the sun ruin the lens?

  • Jared, how about using flash to compensate the harsh sunlight? what do you think?

  • do you live with your mom

  • @TheCaptainSiphilas What you can do is... go for a higher level DSLR... whether Canon or Nikon... get a Canon 7D... or 60D if you cant go that far in terms of price... switching from one brand to the other won't help if you will still get an entry level DSLR....

  • Hint, instead of going into manual - save time by using exposure compensation :)

Im forever using spot metering, and can get a pretty good judgement if the cameras going to over/underexpose at the shutter speed its telling me, so I just quickly throw in some compensation, works every time ;)

  • very great and informative video jared - thanks!

  • @TheCaptainSiphilas What do you have atm? Go for the D7000 or D300s then

  • Very very smart. I really learnt something. I never ever learnt from the camera by assessing the aperture priority mode and then get into manual and expose the compensation. Really great.

  • JAREDD PLEASE Do a video of the new AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G PLEASE! i wanan see your review on it!

  • @azngamefreak46 he already has one.. less than a week ago

  • @azngamefreak46 i did that a few days ago, u will see full res shots and all.

  • So, when you go to manual you ignore the meter right? This system works great, but it is a little slow for something like a wedding. And if you have a mid day wedding for example, how do you determine your exposure and how you change them? you change exposure for every shot?

  • Do you cut the grass yourself.

  • @ClankyRochet they would never let me cut it because I would end up cutting shapes and words into it lol.

  • @JaredPolin What would you do?

  • Halfing the shutter speed in manual...glad to know the pros do the same thing I do. Awesome!

  • @EndMLMHeadaches In what scenarios do you do the half shutter thing?

  • @kauxkaux I tend to run in aperture priority, sometimes the camera picks a shutter speed that is too slow and makes the image too bright. I look at the shutter speed it chose and flip to manual mode setting the shutter speed to half the value the camera picked.

  • The power of the raw is with you, love it

  • How does Jared Polin feel about Joe Mcnally?

  • @davidg1024 Also, how does Jared feel about using a hand held light meter?

  • love your videos - greatings from germany.

  • One could also use a reflector to fill the subject.

  • Thanks Jared, nice one!!

  • May the RAW be with you!

  • i would think to shoot with flash to fill in shadows. Ive learned from people that its better to use a flash in the day and not use it as much at night

  • alpa

  • thank you so much! this really helped! Now I can shoot portrait photos without that blazing sun coming through my lens and making everything black! thanks again Jared! :D

  • when the sun is like that it will trick the light meter in the camera right?

  • I used to shoot RAW. My computer got blown up by a lightning strike the other day and my laptop can't handle Lightroom 3 processing, so it's back to JPEG for now. :(

  • Look at the fro glow!

  • I love your video tutorials! Thanks!!!!

  • Great video. One thing I've really noticed is when you film outside, your video is over exposed and over saturated. What do you film it with? If it's another DSLR, I know you can do better than that :P

  • Hey Jared, what is your opinion of using Live view to adjust your exposure and then switching to view finder?

  • @lighto999 im not a fan of live view personally.

  • @lighto999 Use the histogram for exposure checking and use live view to get a nice sharp image and to check your composition.

  • @lighto999 Live view on pretty much any camera at the moment SUCKS for adjusting exposure. The only good thing about is is for adjusting composition on a tripod or at a super low angle. Also a lot of video is done in "Live View" on Nikon's and other cameras.

  • great lesson :DD very useful!

  • I've always liked backlighting subjects. Especially portraits because then you don't have squinty eyes and get less shadows on the face.

  • Good video Jared. However it starts a difficult subject - spot metering. Users should be aware that you have to look at the light reflected off whatever you are spot metering and decide where you want that tone to lie in your exposure. The camera is gonna try and put that as "middle grey" or most of the time so you may have to bias your meter either way. If what you are spot metering is not middle grey your intended exposure may not come out as you would expect.

  • Is this same as silhouet?

  • @YourAdThere no

  • Excellent again Jared, very helpful.

  • does using the lens hood is necessary while doing this?

  • Thanks for the nxt assignment! Love them! :))

  • 600 vids next vid

  • is this your back yard ?

  • @shess0501 you can do that as an option as well just explain your settings so everyone can learn from it.

  • @JaredPolin Agreed. Learn to do it both ways. Now if I could get a digital back from my dad's Spotmatic and relive my early days.....

  • now i know what spot materng is :)

    TY

  • Cool. Going to do the fill flash option too?

  • @sinoperture yes i will at some point do that as well.

  • what I learned from this video: use a fro to block out the sun ;)

  • good.

    -antovega

  • I love shooting into the sun and then using flash....

  • @Spaeckli Same here, I was just about to type that. It works great for me.

  • @Spaeckli strobist

  • @warachito should that be an insult?

  • first to rate? hmmm. jokes. Jared I really appreciate the amount of effort you put in to your videos and edits plus I've learn a lot from them . You convinced me to shoot RAW at all times. Keep up the good job man.

  • 3nd.

  • Shooting into the sun is not a No-no - Its a Fro-no...

    ahhhhhhhh :/

  • FIRST!

  • geat lesson, thank you

  • EEEP in the sun :(

Yes very very nasty if you are stuck in a situation like that. Always good to know what might fix it ;)
