The comparision between the past and the present is almost too painful to witness. From us Finns the Russians stole the city of Viipuri. Kaliningrad is the most fast growing city in russia after Moscow because it is russian western border with europe and most of the import and export goes throoh Kaliningrad. for 50 years of it's history it has grown so rapidly and the center of the city looks very very nice now. we need it back, the city has deep german roots, many german philosphers and writers are borned in the city, and the city date all the way to year 1250, when the germans maked the city, a whole city, before ever eastprussia and all that came, germans maked the city, it has german roots, and was almost 700 years german. Gorbatjow, gave us an offer, to buy the city back in 1989/90, then we had to deal with the former DDR first. We first had to rebuild DDR. DDR was like russia today. Not a very rich state. And i know that 60-80 billons could to much good in russia. But the offer that Gorbatjow gave us, is not forgotton, it is still there. we also must have enough money to rebuild Königsberg, and give the russians that live there proper houses and conditions and that, like we did to the former east germans.
That's not quite right, although this land had a degree of autonomy, after the Teutonic order lost the battle of Grunwald (Tannenburg) in 1410 those lands were under the suzerainty of the Polish Crown, the electors had to pay homage to Polish kings until the time of Frederic The Great and the first Polish partion in 1772. Only then was this land to become become oficially Prussian.

So the buildings that you see today are for all intents and purposes Polish.

I can assure that all these buildings were rebuilt long before Poland even joined the EU, in most cases 10 years after the war. That is not theft, its a just price for Germany losing the war, I 'am astounded at the moderation of the Poles. If they had been adequately compensated for the lands that they lost in the east with land in the west, than today land as far as Berlin and possibly further would be a part of Poland. Poland is 20% smaller that in was before the war.

It's so sad and shameful what RAF terror bomb attack and Russian barbarians did to this city, once a true pearl of the Baltic Sea. The comparision between the past and the present is almost too painful to witness. From us Finns the Russians stole the city of Viipuri. It suffers of lack of taking care, but was not systematically destroyed like Königsberg during and long after the war.

Kaliningrad is the most fast growing city in russia after Moscow because it is russian western border with europe and most of the import and export goes throoh Kaliningrad. for 50 years of it's history it has grown so rapidly and the center of the city looks very very nice now. Offcourse its nothing close to what it used to be before but that is the price you pay for WW2.

It was never, EVER Slavic land. The Teutonic Knights were granted it from the Polish king in the 1400's, provided they wiped out the non-Slavic Baltic natives. From then on we Germans have always had it, even after the First World War. It only became Slavic in 1945 when Russia annexed it and killed or expelled the native German population.

Gorbatjow, gave us an offer, to buy the city back in 1989/90, then we had to deal with the former DDR first. We first had to rebuild DDR. DDR was like russia today. Not a very rich state. And i know that 60-80 billons could to much good in russia. But the offer that Gorbatjow gave us, is not forgotton, it is still there. we also must have enough money to rebuild Königsberg, and give the russians that live there proper houses and conditions and that, like we did to the former east germans.

That's not quite right, although this land had a degree of autonomy, after the Teutonic order lost the battle of Grunwald (Tannenburg) in 1410 those lands were under the suzerainty of the Polish Crown, the electors had to pay homage to Polish kings until the time of Frederic The Great and the first Polish partion in 1772. Only then was this land to become become oficially Prussian.

Once again, your knowledge of history leaves a little to be desired. You will find that although the overwhelming part of the architecture is German, there are middle age polish influences on Gdansk at least. And although most of the buildings were originally built by Germans, they were also destroyed by Germans and Russians, and exclusively rebuilt by the Poles. So the buildings that you see today are for all intents and purposes Polish.

I can assure that all these buildings were rebuilt long before Poland even joined the EU, in most cases 10 years after the war. That is not theft, its a just price for Germany losing the war, I 'am astounded at the moderation of the Poles. If they had been adequately compensated for the lands that they lost in the east with land in the west, than today land as far as Berlin and possibly further would be a part of Poland. Poland is 20% smaller that in was before the war.

I can assure you they were not, as I was in Breslau, Danzig, Marienburg, and Warsaw (the one historical Polish city) in 1998, and they were not then. Koenigsberg itself was completely untouched until the late 60s, and the remaining historical structures largely restored with German money in 1994.

This is the fault of the Russians, not the Germans. The Polish occupation of German cities, sanctioned by the French and British, was a large cause of WWII. I was also in Minsk, where the Russians had destroyed all of the historical Polish castles in the 1930s. I like the Poles and sympathize with their plight, but one must be able to point to the actual cause of the occupation problem.

There was a referendum held by the League of Nations to determine whether people wanted to be a part of Poland or to Germany, those who chose to belong to Poland were allocated to Poland. Most of these lands were stolen by Frederic in any case.

@zbyyyg ..In den Jahren 1918/19 gründet Polen auch seine ersten "Konzentrationslager" zur Internierung deutscher Vertriebener in Stralkowo und Szczypiorno, das Eigentum vieler Deutscher wird eingezogen.
Besonders unverständlich ist dieses Verhalten auch für damalige Beobachter, weil der polnische Staat seine Unabhängigkeit von Russland dem Deutschen Reich zu verdanken hat.
