A male elephant (or more) would be nice; it would help give the females a sense of family, and possibly mates. But male elephants are rarely seen in zoos and almost never in circuses because they go through periods of high testosterone release called "musth", where they become aggressive and difficult to handle.
Most zoos and all circuses simply cannot provide the room and habitat needed for males. This is another reason why they should not keep elephants, and instead have preserves for them.
Thankyou so much for making us aware of what goes on for these poor elephants my friend. I also have to thank askalice50 for sharing it with me. Keep up your great work. We have a 6 flags by us, but no live animals are there so thats a good thing.
Thanks to you too! It was hard to see, but I hope it helps spread the word about places like this. Wherever you are, maybe you can write to 6 Flags and ask them to stop the insanity.
I have to agree with you that this yard is an absolute abomination to elephants. The living conditions of these elephants is repulsive.
On another note this place should not give people a taste of how all elephants live in zoos. There are some zoos that have excellent elephant habitats and the elephants are extremely content in their exhibits with no health problems
ingezuri: I see we have a zoo fan here! Thanks for your comments. I do have one question for you: how do you know the elephants are "extremely content" in their pens? And could this perchance be the Bronx Zoo you're talking about?
I just visited the Oakland zoo today. The elephant habitat was WAY better than the 6 Flags hellhole, but I still saw a elephant swaying her head-- stereotypic behavior that shows she was bored, stressed, or just plain DIScontent. Any thoughts?
I think the elephant you saw in Oakland was anticipating something. A lot of times they start to sway around the time they know they do a certain activity with one of their keepers. Another thought is she might have picked the swaying up at another zoo before zoos started doing things to improve the lives of their elephants and the behavior just stuck with her.
If you message me I could give you some great links to videos of what many zoos do to give elephants a more natural and enriching life.
I'm so glad you went behind the scenes here. These poor beings. Sharing your video and hoping that anyone who thinks they might like to visit this "zoo" sees this first!

I suppose you could be right, good points.
I'd be interested in those links, thanks.
I'll post the vid of the Oakland zoo elephant habitat now on my page...
