David james is one of the scariest individuals in the martial arts. Awesome teacher awesome school and REAL world martial arts techniques that WORK. The man is the real deal.
Yea I concure, I trained at his gym before 9/11 for a few classes. Above the boxing gym. after 9/11 the whole area suffered as well as the dojo. It was sad for a gem of a place.
There is a school like this here in L.A. But it's not jiu jitsu. It's kempo taught by Ron Chapel. He does what David James does; concentrate on the simplistic, body movements of the defender. Chapel doesn't do tourneys cause he wants to maintain integrity throughout training. If I had the cash I'd go tomorrow and sign up fast and in a hurry! Chapel or James, either one. . .
Reverse punching isn't realistic in today's day and age for "self defense", but somehow grabbing my wrist so I can throw 10 unanswered strikes to you compliantly....is? *shrugs*
i go the the school myself its a great place 2 be at... and its a great system... if i didnt have school and other responsibilities ill be there every day... but u get wat u can
@blackshadow8008 I was just saying above, I can't afford to go at all. At least not now. But when things do change for me, I'm making a beeline to that university!!
He was named one of the toughest men on the planet in Blackbelt Magazine. His 123 HIT dvd's are rated #1 on martial arts video reviews, & I personally used a technique from him that I learned here on youtube dealing with two handed grabs & IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM! People don't realize that learning self defense doesn't take years, it takes days(depending also on your instructor).Learning a combat sport is totally diff't which takes a lot of time especially if you want to fight pro.
I've trained in various martial arts since the late 80's, including American Kenpo, Wing Chun, Hung Gar and Jiu Jitsu. I have to say that Vee Arnis looks like the most practical, no BS, street worthy art that I have ever seen. I wish I could train with Master James but I'm on the west coast. I still plan to get these dvds though. Outstanding stuff.
And I'm not affiliated with ESPY TV video, but for those thinking of ordering from them, they have great customer service!
Yeah in FMA or Filipino Martial Arts which Arnis is a Filipino Martial Art. You learn weapons first and then you use empty hand. because the movements in FMA are based of the movement of if you had a stick or a knife its very affective stuff.
This is true practical self defence.. Thank you prof James... I have been studing for 9years daito ryu, sanuces , and I have found that this art is a system of system forreal.. No disrespect to any other art. This is the real deal. Don't believe come down anytime and train!!!!
The economy of downtown Manhattan was ruined by 9/11 for a few years. Besides the chaos, many firms moved out of the neighborhood and went to Jersey City across the river or further depriving the school of many students who would come after work. That's enough to cause any school to close.
I'm going to my first Vee Arnis class next Friday.Looking forward to it,looks very effective :)

Really nice to see progressive thinking and realistic training even before the 1st UFC and the advent of BJJ and MMA.
"We don't hold back knowledge"
"First of all[...] we teach you falling and basic Judo"
"[...]So you understand the basics of how to hit the ground and how to stop someone from hurting you when they take you to the ground"
Kudos.

Yeah, he's right! Most systems make you wait for weapons training. The only other system that introduces weapons right away is Jeet Kune Do.

Also, the area was locked down for a while, so he had no access to his place of business.

Yes, forgot about that. We were on the other side of Houston St. a mile north and the blockade there only lasted a week.
