  • Well it was better when it first opened compared to when this was filmed but.... 1) I remember dancers in Va Vas and Beachcomber being much better especially the spinners 2)Don't recognise anyone from this film I went from 73-76ish couple of comebacks

Used to go to the Mecca first then on to Wigan wasn't much of a dancer if you get

my drift James Brown just came on what!!!

Its a shame that no true record of Wigan exists except in my head and heart

This isnt a dig at who was in the video

  • The man in the loose white shirt spinning at the start then in the black vest at the end of the video was my dad; James Peter Connolly. From Nottingham. He died last sunday.

  • though i deeply respect the comments about the cameras intruding back then, im so glad they were there..i would have never known the energy and feeling otherwise..

really great share, would do anything to go back and move with them!

  • northen soulies i love you...went too soo many allnighters in the 70's still love the music and hehehe clothes

  • Great music! Who does that mashed potato song?

  • @asimak this one is by Gene Chandler but the original is by James Brown.

  • Danny White is a killer tune all day long

  • This takes me back!! My wife and I were keen Northern Soulers way back in the 70's. At her office Christmas party last year she wore her long black circle skirt with a very flared long white slip under. She really burnt up the dancefloor....plenty of spins and loud claps!!

  • bet she looked proper dodgy

  • These cats were on show for the cameras! Fair enough! Many, many real groovers stayed away from this 'all nighter' in lights. Get it, sight of 'the man' spelled an 'ohh no, no'! This scene was ours, underground and held so then. This was no enlightenment; it was an imposition and invasion. 'We' had no need of publicity, regrettably greedy others did!

  • Exactly Mikris50...most of these just wanted to pose for the cameras...that night was a real No-No.for the majority of Casino lovers...KTF

  • Back in the late `60's me and the T-Bowl boys use to tear up the dance floor when the DJ burnt "There Was A Time" by James Brown!

  • loved the clip in an episode of the sopranos where big tony bottle of bourbon in hand bursts into,AND WE ALL GET TOGETHER ANY KIND O WEATHER, priceless

  • Didnt even know these outtakes existed! I was there that night, but think i'm in the shadows speeding, paranoid of them bright TV lights!

Thanks and keep the faith. Craig.

  • Some of the dancing is superb...i was too young for this...my youth wasspent at the Hacienda Manchester late eighties... different era altogether...but i still feel soulful music when i hear it....good job

  • Sue from Jersey, this is the clip I was talking about. I was there with John Collet (dancing) our mutual ex, and Ted from Grimsby sulking because I was sober. I wanted to join my mates from Halifax and Sue from Bury. I believe this may have been one of the last times I went to Wigan. I left before it finished me off. But eh, it was so good. Hope you are coming to Doncaster for the Septebler night. Take care and miss you. Coral

  • when i think of nothern soul i think of black ppl dancin haha this is funny..and i didnt know dude wore elephant pants, them spins are crazy

  • Can someone please tell me the name of the tracks and artists in this great vid?

  • The tunes (in order of appearance) are:

Cracked up over you - Danny White (Decca)

They'll never know why - Freddie Chavez (Look)

There was a time - Gene Chandler (Brunswick)

(Just say) You're wanted and needed - Gwen Owens (Velgo)

  • this is just THE best video on youtube for this!! thank you so much for this upload! please check out my northern soul on my channel that accompanies my videos and let me know what you think.:0)

  • because its northern soul...........

  • as an rocker u should havebeen to the casion to have seen it and lived it as i did keep the faith

  • Safeway56 ..... its because the music was added afterwards. Who knows what they were dancing to. I often see Northern Dance clips that bear no resemblance to the rhythm. Don't know why they don't synchronise the clips. A lot of slowmo in this though. But I can say for sure that in real life the timing was BANG ON! That is why it looked so good from afar. Everyone (well nearly everyone:-/) was in perfect time. Being on the beat was critical otherwise you looked sloppy.

  • Spot on Rit! ~ Ya hafta be on the beat

  • Does anyone kn ow the Halifax gang, or Sue from Bolton and Bernie Mcmahon from Ashton in Makerfield. Woould love them to get in touch. Coral McDermott

  • wow,must've been a big place?

  • hi anyone know the name of the 3 record .dan

  • there was a time-gene chandler

  • the james brown version is far better

  • i didnt realise they had video cameras in them days

  • them days its the 1970s not the 1670s. its a television crew yes they had cameras, and this was the begining of the end, for northern soul, never should have let them in.

  • i was only jokin

but watchin the dancin im surprised they didnt go home with bruises all over em, all them leg kicks in such a small space

it looks quite funny but would have liked to have been old enough when wigan casino was open my mum has all the cds n i love em. fave song long after tonight, got that on in the car all the time
