awesome vid. have you thought about adding drilled holes to the pipe for some air to the soil? Also how about adding a couple wicks through some of those drainage holes?
@Albone3000 I don't use the pipe anymore. Good idea on adding more wicks through the drainage holes. Could very well work, but don't want too many as want to allow the soil to be able to drain.
@CanarsieBK Yeah looks like a cool idea, they're called Olla self watering pots, the aztecs used to use them, bury them, fill with water and put a stone ontop to minimise evaporation, theres a few youtube videos, I just cant find anyone who makes them in Australia.
I'm rethinking the double bucket idea and may use just one with the center of the lid cut out as the platform, sitting on top of 1/2 a large plastic coffee can. Someone else is using this idea with the remaining lid's outer part snapping back down over black plastic to keep the soil from drying out. When I'm at the hardware I'm still going to look into some 45* pvc angles that would just press tightly into the larger side hole to make it easier to fill the reservoir from outside the bucket.
I had seen your 'tile' video and many questioned whether or not it was sturdy enough to hold the weight of 4+ gallons of damp soil. I used single buckets last year on my patio with great success and this year am making self watering buckets (see my video and 2010 harvest results)
I also saw your latest one where you are NOT using any pipes, instead drilling an oversize 'side' hole in the outer bucket to fill the reservoir. That will cut down on available water too much.
@VirtualTourShop Thanks for the comment. The oversized hole has yet to pose a problem with the amount of available water as it's only about 1" diameter, which is what's needed for space between the water and the planting container. Actually works out perfectly.
Great series of vids! Question.....I am worried that the weight of the top bucket with all the dirt in it will crush the wicking basket. Is this really a concern?
@bgaviator No . If the containers are the same size, the planting container will rest about 1/8" or less above the wicking basket so it doesn't even touch it.
This is exactly what I have been looking for...I thank you for show us, in all your stages, how to use the two bucket method--I just couldn't "see" how to do it =) I love that a city guy is showing how to balcony garden...right on!
for olla irrigation with buckets look up globalbuckets on internet and look at their olla section

You might grease the two buckeets where they meet, so they don't get stuck. For some reason buckets ten to stick sometimes.
Thanks for this idea.
check out " 3-D Vertical Barrel Gardening " on youtube for another aspect.

looks like a waste of a second bucket check out my vid its much easier and does the exact same thing
dahduke 9 months ago
@dahduke Can certainly make it that way as well, but breaking them down becomes difficult. I've done both ways and like the two bucket method better.
