Sal wrote this song on a Thursday about a traumatic Thursday in his life. Jim Croce recorded it on a Thursday; he also died on a Thursday. My friend Sal passed away yesterday... on Thursday. God bless and keep you, old friend. We love you.
Ther is a beuatiful story on the internet (I believe on Sal's website?) about how and why he wrote this song and that, a week before he died, Jim recorded it as a surprise if I remember correctly. A very moving story from one friend about another friend, very touching.
just kinda goes to show how we have evoled over the years, now when people mean "lets get together" they mean lets sit around the T.V and get wasted, just looking on what that definition of "lets get together" is mind boogling of how quick things can change in a matter of a few years
Beautiful song it seems though I don't understand everything, still... I can feel the music is great. I enjoy it a bit more every time I watch it. And I feel small and insignificant when I watch "Google Joseph Salviuolo ..", however, I like going back to it from time to time. I did not know this singer; thanks Redkruzer.
This took place in a former Mennonite Meeting House. Behind them & to our right were 2 back to back pianos. Joe plays both of them, in a You tube video:
"Jim Croce 's closest friend : Sal Joseph : pian..." As I write this, it is the top video that you may click on to play or just click below this video to the video, this one responds to.

Holy cow, if I closed my eyes I'd swear on a stack of Tolstoy novels that was Jim himself. Hats off to Joe. The fact that his song was recorded by his and "our" friend on his final studio work must have been the most remarkable tribute to friendship, certainly in Joe's eyes. I can't imagine how his life changed on 9/20/73. Mine did. As for Maury? Whew, an artists as true as the seasons. I didn't know I Remember Mary was his until a few years ago. I thought Jim was testing his own octaves.
You are so right on Joe's life changing so on Richard Wright's birthday. Imaginairium stuff: Imagine your 2 best friends were killed overnight. Then know that these 2 friends were Jim & Maury. I too was in a daze.Joe has this wonderful CD he made as part of a student - teacher concert they gave a Glassboro.
Also, please check out Terry Shore Fisher, Jim, Maury & Joe's musical companion.
The interesting thing is that you hear Jim in attendance with the guys talking about bi-lateral symetry. Fascinating. I've been playing Jim's stuff note for note since 1972.
Joe & Jim sound very much alike. That was astute of you to think that it was Jim.Love to hear your stuff. I presume that the note for note is only Jim's part. Maury's part is more difficult. When Maury played his own music live, he would often not be able to remember the lyrics he wrote, because the finger picking was so complicated.
This is rare stuff! thank you. Since 1974 I've wondered who Sal was. Jim's last work in-studio was in NY when he finished off some vocal tracks on Thursday. This is a terrific song so you know Jim couldn't resist it.

So sad to hear Sal died...... this is one of those songs that I wish I wrote.

I think Maury wrote Salon and Saloon, not Top Hat Bar and Grille. Top Hat... is Croce's song.
I was just about to ask why the song is called Thursday, when I saw the comment below. Thanks for that info.
RIP Sal...
