@luvinmynephews96 in the show they chose to have a teenage boy be elena's sibling than a 4 year old girl because of the way the storytelling goes. with what happens in the show ,it would be cruel to have a kid involved . so they changed it. Meredith wasnt there in the beggining, so they needed a way to introduce her already knowing vampires so she could fill meredith's void from the book. a way to make her know vampires was for her to be a founding family member, hence fell.
