I like Terry Bozzio. I really do. Seems such a nice guy. That's sometimes hard to find in a muso so gifted. More power to ya, Mr Bozzio. Keep pounding, Mate... \m/ (:o)
Terry refers to himself as a NORMAL" drummer. ha ha ha. One of the greatest. I've known about him since the 70's met w/him one on one and saw him perform live twice. He is NOT a normal drummer. His playing is way beyond this galaxy yet he exudes humility and respect.
Is that Vinnie Caluati on the left side? Amazing, I also saw Alan Holdsworth twice with Chad Wackerman, and JEFF BERLIN on bass - talk about musical perfection.
What an amazing collection of musicians (and nice people!) I would really get off on seeing all the Zappa keyboard alumni together in one room recollecting memories. That would be too much.
@Juulian83 Naw man, I've heard that there was a bit of a rivalry during that transition between terry and Vinnie, but no hate.
I dunno how accurate this is... but I heard that Terry was present for Vinnie's audition to replace him; and that Vinnie SIGHT READ the black page; while eating sushi! Anybody would feel like a crap drummer after that lol
@ChrisBurling42 I don't remember the bit about sushi, but there's an interview with Frank where he confirms Terry sight reading The Black Page. Someone else mentions it in an interview too, and says that after Terry played it, all the other drummers that were waiting to audition left without bothering. Might have been Vai.
@ChrisBurling42 this is untrue. Terry was sitting in on a rehearsal, with Vai and vinnie in the band. vinnie was playing Mo n Herbs vacation (which is in some ways more complex than TBP). vinnie had sushi set up on his stand, and he gets to a super challenging point, and simultaneously turns the page with one hand, while picking up chopsticks/sushi in the other and playing with his feet. Terry got up and left. not sure on the source...check wikipedia under Vinnie
I knew this guy in college, he was impeccable as a concert band drummer, and didn't stay too long...but was one of the truly nicest guys I've ever had the privilege to know. Hi Terry! You've come a long way, baby!
I saw him with Zappa plays Zappa first time with stevie vai...I was tripping on mushrooms and he comes out and performed "I'm so cute" without playing drums...I was like "I think he's a drummer!?" craziness
Prefer his hair in the drum channel drum jams though :O. Seriously though he seems like a real nice guy, in the Thomas Pridgen and Lang roundtables he seems so down to earth and there is a moment at the end of the Thomas Lang drum jam when he just gives all the musicians a hug.
Terry is an amazing drummer. and the ultimate professional. He's giving them all so many compliments, but you can see by their body language they no what a great drummer he is. Yet there he is giving all of them the ultimate compliments. The 2 best drummers Zappa ever had were Terry and Vinnie. I love all the drummers there, but even they no how great Terry and Vinnie were to the evolution of the Zappa band.
@patrickforpresident Yeah, you get the impression that they are also rather humbled by the praise. I mean Terry Bozzio, is a *seriously* great musician. One of the best I've ever heard, but he knows that he is also in the presence of greatness with every person in that room. The respect they all have for each other and for Frank and his music is just wonderful. The art that Frank and his bands created during that period of time is astoundingly good.
I believe its left to right: Ralph Humphrey, Chester Thompson, (Terry) Chad Wackerman, and Ruth Underwood

He is a very, very, good drummer. And, used to do "acting." Saw Bozio with Zappa around 1977. Great, great show (titties and beer).
