  • love this very clever!

  • is it Rowan Atkinson?

  • tks

  • Positively top class.

  • Ahhh. I last saw this on NTNOCN over 30 years ago.

    *feels old*

  • wow this is BRILLIANT! :D

  • This is the most genial sketch I have ever seen. I've known Monty Python for quite a long time, so I can't believe I've discovered it just today. Amazing!

  • i simply cannot get over the fact how uttery brilliant this skit is....the idea is perfectly succinct and it tickles me sensless:)

  • No the nine o'clock news should be more popular

  • a loving tribute from the alternative comedians to the founders of insane funny comedy.

  • Terry jones would love that

He already thinks he is all knowing !

  • give it few more years and we may very well see a python based religion

  • They died for us many times . . .

(amusing little NTNON dig at MP there !)

  • Nobody expect The Spanish Inquisition!!!!!!!

  • That freaked me out. I'm called Alexander Walker

  • As a Christian I think we owe an apology for Life of Brian.

A lot of people simply didn’t get the joke! It wasn’t about Christ but about some of the idiots who claim to represent Him. (Camping, Hinn, Copeland etc)

The film is summed up in one line by a character that Cleese played: ‘I know you're the Messiah, I should know I've followed a few!’

  • Why are their subtitles?

  • Torquay Hotel with JC and Spanish Waiters... hmm... it wasn't called Fawlty Towers by any chance? :)

  • faaaaaantastic

  • The subtitles on this are fucking annoying.

  • "Whenever two or three are gathered in one place, then they shall perform the parrot sketch"

    "This is an ex-parrot"

    "it has ceased to be"

    "it has ceased to be"

    "indeed"

  • It's ridiculous how much Rowan Atkinson sounds like the actual bishop from the python debate in this sketch. Brilliant. :)

  • Mel Smith and Rowan Atkinson L&G...

  • Anyone else catch "the good Bok"? They really knew their stuff.

  • Oh thank you. Irony so rich and buttery you could drizzle it over pancakes.

  • he he he...:D

  • These men died for us.....frequently!

    Brilliant:P

  • Freakin' brilliant.

  • I am a christian and I love the Life of Brian. I also love how this sketch really shows the idiocy of people's objections to one of the most funny movies ever.

  • aaaaaaahahahaha xD great thanks for this

  • @MrSelidor7 As a Pythonist, I say amen to that! Amen!

  • I just wet myself!

  • @TDaViEzZ1994 I've just wet yourself too.

  • it's a shame the original debate doesn't seem to exist anywhere in its entirety. It'd be interesting to see all sides of the debate, or even a transcript.

  • Norway banned the film "Life of Brian". And Sweden, being kind of a "brother" to Norway made fun of it, because Swedish people were allowed to wacth it.

Today I read, that in some kindergardens in Sweden it is no longer allowed to use the words "he" and "she". They have made up af word in between "hen".

They are trying to brainwash everyone to think that men and women are 100% the same. Even fx. men can not give birth... This is kind of the same as religion. The words being "blashphemous"

  • @MsPwain This is one of the dumbest comments I have ever read on Youtube. And that says quite a lot.

  • Now that I think about it, is George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" a song about John Cleese? O_O

  • Oj my god this is fun!

  • @MsPwain I find orange juice a lot of fun too..... I'm glad I'm not alone!

  • i laughed till i cried

  • Brilliant. No one has the right to not be offended.

  • This sketch is actually sheer unadulterated genius. What an excellent idea to use the very arguments the Christians used against 'The Life of Brian' to expose the utter folly of the debate. Those who viewed the members of Monty Python as brainless morons really had no idea who they were dealing with. These guys were (and still are) truly gifted both comically and intellectually. This is one of my favourite ever sketches. Fantastic satire AND hilarious.

  • Wow, when I watched this video I didn't expect to come across the Spanish Inquisition!

    Wait a tic...

  • I am blind and could not see the subtitles and thus had no idea what they were saying.

  • @dhaddox yes they should have put put Braille subtitles on the clip.

  • Mistake in the subtitles - he said "The Good Bok" - an allusion to the "The Brand New Monty Python Bok". I had the "Papperbok" as a kid!

  • 12 people did not expect the spanish inquistion

  • @Livtraser Yeah but nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Their cheif weapon is surprise

  • Atkinson has shown himself at last he is an aipythonist, He ought to be burned at the stake

  • my new rule for religion:

any1 who uses the word "blasphemy" or "heretic" seriously anymore is off their rocker

any1 offended by negative or funny portrayals of their religion clearly has second thoughts about it themselves, since they need it to be praised constantly to believe in it

  • who downvoted this and why? have you no concept of humor? parody? satire? not only was 'life of brian' a hilarious movie, and the controversy counter-equally ridiculous but to then have rowen atkinson (et al) flip-and-parody the debate in this fashion is über-meta.

i still can't believe i had never seen this before. thanks kanizu00!

  • Life Of Brian was certainly the best Monty Python film made. It is less a poke fun at Jesus himself and more of a jab at the political situation and how people of the time fell for numerous false messiahs. More at a jab at David Koresh and Ariffin Mohammed than Jesus Christ himself. All this because of do-gooding little minded Mary Whitehouse....

  • @sweenyadam I beg to differ. The Holy Grail FTW!

  • python is worshiped throughout the WESTERN WORLD !!!

i am a python worshiper and i am from India !!!!

  • @soumyaaymous same here

  • @soumyaaymous I watched this when it came out, but I didn't understand it. Now I do.

  • ROFL LMAO! It is an ex parrot...it has ceased to be

  • Comment removed

  • ha ha ha, brilliant.

  • This... is.. GENIUS!!!!

  • "These men died for us - frequently." good one

  • @Sylderon, I concur, as an American, that younger Americans might just know Rowan Atkinson from Mr. Bean. However, speaking for myself, I've been a Rowan Atkinson fan since the days of the Blackadder eras.

  • @njbrit007 he looks young

  • This is probably one of the cleverest sketches, yet so simple. :}

  • i happen to love mr bean but you cant deny that blackadder and loads of his other stuff was fantastic as well

  • She is hot!!!

  • Isn't all religion blasphemous againts human intelligence ?

  • @bermudarailway Nope ..

  • @bermudarailway that's right i cant even keep count of how many times i've felt offended by the religous mumbo jumbo fairy tale believers. but i just think : "pfft, bloody wanker" and i move on with my life. i'm not gonna waste it on crying over someone saying something that i don't agree with.

  • Damn, Rowan Atkinson is so fucking intelligent and subtle, and everyone remembers him for this Mr. Bean shit.

    What's wrong with humanity?

  • @alinemerrow What about Edmund Blackadder?

  • @Sylderon Blackadder is certainly not as known as Mr. Bean :(

  • @alinemerrow I realize that, I was just bringing him up. And still, doing something that gets you favorably compared to Buster Keaton has to count for something, right?

  • @Sylderon Sure. Only when you say to people "I like Rowan Atkinson and his sense of humour" (at least in my country) people say "Oh, Mr Bean, is he? That's odd you like this silly thing". >_< That nags me.

  • @alinemerrow blame that on the yanks

  • It's nice to see someone admitting that sometimes the Python sketches failed :D

  • @MrBuch169169

He's talking about that the sketches do not have a proper ending and punchline as usually expected from them like the Parrot Sketch.

  • @MrBuch169169 Whoever says out loud that a Monty Python sketch has ever failed, thy shall be stoned to death for that be Blashpemour!

BTW... I always wondered why the religious people cried about Life of Brian, but not about Search for the holy Grail. For one thing, God is appearing "in person", but also a holy hand granate is used, and the hand granate is even blessed? Connecting religion to war?

Can't seem to find any logic in their complaints. Or I am missing something, but what the hell...

  • love it how fawlty towers makes it in at the end

  • One of this show's classics. And a spot on puncturing of the pomposity of the religious objections to Life of Brian that we had to endure at the time.

  • Nobody expects the spanish inquisition! ;)

  • @sethkar I was going to say the same thing, darn you! :D

  • Jesus Christ - Just another carpenter who promised to come back to finish the job, but didn't.

  • @astrophonix Jesus Christ, typical tradesman, disapperaed for 3 days and gave no explanation

  • HAHAHAHAHAHHA... best sketch ever!!!!

  • watch my baggy trousers vid ppl, comment and subscribe

  • "Well, I certainly didn't expect this Spanish Inquisition! (Claps)"

    It bring me to tears!

  • My comic Messiah= Michael Palin

  • Actually this is a parody of a debate show episode where a bishop criticized life of brain while fingering a crusifix.

  • Wonderful!

  • "whenever 2 or 3 are in one place, they shall perform the parrot sketch"

    "It is an ex-parrot"

    "it has ceased to be"

    love it :D

  • Classic!!!

  • My god. Pure comedy!

  • No no! Polly is not dead, it is resting.

  • Brilliant!

  • They missed Good BOK in the subtitles ;)

  • does anyone know if the python cast saw this and what they thought of it? they must of laughed

  • no boy expects the Spanish Inquisition.

  • I would rather be a Python worshipper than a Christian or any other religion in the world. As the Good Film says "work it out for yourselves, don't let anybody tell you what to do!"

  • @MrSelidor7 Exactly, have said this many times myself.

  • @MrSelidor7 So isn't it contradictory that you're now doing as they told you to?

  • @MrECC83. Don't start me. This isn't the right room for an argument.

  • @MrECC83. I've told you that if you want to argue then you have to pay for another five minutes.

Anyway, being told to work it out for yourself and doing so it not the same as being told how to live your life and doing so.

  • brilliant

  • HAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAH

  • Priceless!

  • I'm a Python worshipper and I LOVE this sketch!

    *expects 50 thumbs up*

  • It is set in a HOTEL, in TORQUAY, where literally hundreds of spanish waiters are being clipped about the ear by this jesus chris bloke!

  • The fact that Rowan Atkinson is best known for his role of Mr. Bean always depresses me....this show and the Blackadder series - the fourth season in particular, are so much more... damn...

  • @ellipsis000 100% agreed, He has done SO much more :(

  • NTNON really did show the way for the 80s new wave of TV comedies. Great sketch from a great programme. Thanks for sharing :)

  • @SimplyPaul I agree. A very influential show for British comedy shows.

  • absoslutely brilliant I cant belive I've never seen ths before!

  • one has to watch most of the python's stuff as well as fawlty towers in order to understand this sketch. it so funny!

  • Well I certainly didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition

  • lol i love i have been looking for this video for a long time. couldn't even remember the name until now. thanks for uploading it. i love how the religious nuts went all crazy over this and tried to ban it. especially Mary Whitehouse that holy-than-either puritan

  • Man, the subtitles ruin all the punchlines :)

  • And the typical American nerd doesn't even get this sketch.

  • What are you talking about? American nerds love Python. Shit, if they're watching Not the Nine O'Clock News, they've seen lots of Python.

  • @dasgdasg

    Proven my point. Context.....

  • Fuck You!!! I'm an American Nerd, and I completely understand every aspect of this sketch!

  • @ZachValkyrie

    Every aspect except the humour....lol

  • @ZachValkyrie And express yourself, if I may say so, most eloquently!

  • Well, I certainly didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition!

  • @ZachValkyrie Neither did I. As a Python worshipper, Iam deeply offended and appalled that this parody besmirches our lord, John Cleese. How dare they mock the comic messiah! Please never forget that Python loves you and that the message of Python is one of love and slapping people with fish. Granted there are lumberjack fundamentalists but they are misguided.

    Python loves you!

  • Well, I certainly didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition! ;)

  • the monty, the python and the holy grail. amen. :-D

  • It's a brilliant parody of a real interview done in reverse at the time of Life of Brian.

  • Even the initials, JC, are exactly the same!

  • 1:09

    That's just an epic joke!

  • Which one is the Good Book-I'll have to read it!

  • It sounds like an effing epic book :D

  • Oh, Holy book of Python, how great is thee!

  • Two words: bloody brilliant xD

  • SO smart - really great !!!

I 'm afraid that nowdays neither provocative-non-politically-correct-satyrical shows like this would have made it to TV, neither movies like "Life of Brian" would have ever been shot! -can you imagine religious hystericals claiming "insult on their beliefs"? Wasn't easy even back then - we shall all thank late George Harrison who insisted on producing the film, despite the reactions!

  • @jimmyj1969 It's interesting since you would think that the Western world is becoming more liberal but what you said made me think. It's sad tho...

  • @JamesCrow22 - because, you insensitve clod, some people are deaf and require subtitles... me included!

  • @SteveSputnik What?

  • @SteveSputnik if u r deaf then how did u type this?

  • @soumyaaymous I see what you did there. that was funny thumbs up for you

  • @soumyaaymous You are a fucking idiot.

  • @LizaLips1 what makes u say that?

  • @soumyaaymous Deaf people can type. Don't be so disrespectful.

  • @LizaLips1 thats not disrespectful..lol..every1 knows they can type...dont be so touchy...

  • Ever heard of deaf people?

  • @JamesCrow22 OHHH DERP-DE-DERR!

  • @JamesCrow22 If you are deaf - it is a good idea to have subtitles!

  • genius :D

  • hehe

  • I want them to make this film - it sounds hilarious!

  • a great classic sketch - superb satire! hard to believe nowadays how much the Life of Brian offended people at the time - this brilliantly written & acted skit sums it all up eh?

  • indeed! I think it's great too that the NTNOCN team were so aware of there comparisons with the pythons and not afraid to embrace it. Incredibly brave

  • As a Pythonist, I've always taken deep offence on these so-called Christians. It's perfectly obvious that Jesus Christ raising Lazarus from the tomb is mocking John Cleese in 'The Kipper and the Corpse'

  • Oh God (or should it be Oh my Comic Messiah?) - I'm the biggest "Pythonist" - how could I only have seen this now for the first time? Brilliant!

  • Brilliant

  • In the words of John Cleese: "Whenever two or three are in one place, then they shall perform the parrot sketch"

  • @infernai

    It is an ex parrot.

  • It has ceased to be.

  • Fucking amazing and timeless :D

  • Have people forgotten how Monty Python suffered for us? How often the sketches failed? I mean these men DIED for us - FREQUENTLY!

    ROFL

    and if you will

    COPTER

  • @david552 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAMEN!

  • Where did you get this?

  • haha, fantastic! ;-)

  • That was great, nothing else to say about it really

  • Rowan Atkinson later starred with John Cleese in "Rat Race."

  • actually, they starred together many many times before that... in tspb for example :D

  • What's tspb?

  • the secret policeman's ball :D :D :D
