I don't watch a hell of a lot of TV, no. But I do like Lost, 24 and Two and a Half Men. There's also Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look, but I don't think you get that in the States.
Usually, though, I'll just use the TV as background noise. Old re-runs of Scrubs and Friends do that just fine.
I guess, with all of the focus putting the best face on one's personality, and making sure there's entertaining music in the background, substance and originality does have a tendency to get lost in the mix.
I can honestly say I'm a 100% rational human being and so I've never been wrong about anything. I have said things for which people had more questions than I had expected. I've said things which people have near unanimously disagreed with. I've even said things for which some people have had the poor taste to cite evidence against. But in the end, I just know I'm right in an objective sense and most importantly... facts don't prove a thing.
I'm pretty bad with the confirmation bias. I go to creationists and apologists sites and read them, but it's mostly for "laughs". (*cough* conservapedia *couch*) By doing that i am allready aware that "they" think "we" are the stupid ones for not recognizing g-d. But while doing so i'm quite condesending.... :-(
I don't make video's (yet), but this is quite a challenge!
I think you touched on the true problem and that is rationalism itself. Pure rationalism not coupled with any empiricism is just a bastardization of language.
Any competent linguistics professor can rationalize ANYTHING.
David Hume the British empiricist said it best when he said, "Tis not contrary to reason to prefer the destruction of the whole world to the scratching of my finger."
Hume was probably one of the greatest thinkers in history.
Excellent video, found my way here via ffreeethinker. Subbed.
One of the difficulties that I foresee with this challange, is that mistakes made in the past are so covered with justifications that many will find nothing wrong in their past to make a video about :)
It's a terrific challenge, Clutchology. I'll have to think about it--not because I can't think of anything I do (or have done) wrong, but because I would want whatever response I made to rise to the level of the challenge.
I would say go for it. I dont hold people's quality on this by any objective standard. The aim is to challenge yourself. The success and standard of the video is based purely on how hard you tackled yourself and what you gained from making it. If you think you can get something out of it, by all means, give it a shot!
It's an excellent challenge. I think I know exactly which one of the many things about which I've been wrong that I will make a video response about, Clutch. Figure in the next few weeks, maybe less.
I'm doing some thinking myself, trying to weed out the interesting things from the totally mundane.
This is going to stay open for a while. Mine won't be coming around for another week or so. I want to give people some time to think, and finding the time will be difficult from tomorrow onwards. I'm not sure which of those reasons is legit and which is just an excuse for my laziness. Maybe that can go into my video =P
the difference between a human being and other animals is that the former has the ability to distinguish between right and wrong,if he is unable to distinguish between right and wrong,he is worst than beasts.
I see theists like I see those thousands who line up at American Idol, all thinking they are the one. They are the one who will make millions with their talent and god-given voice of an angel.
But especially when everyone tells them they are crap. They suck. They cannot sing. But they and their family know better. They cannot see what people mean when they say they suck. To themselves, they are better that their inspirations they adulate. Same thing with theists. They cannot and will not see.
And atheists are any different? We're not. That's the point. Atheists will bash the theists. Theists will bash the atheists. Truth is, we're ALL like that. We just blind ourselves to the flaws of those that agree with us.
These flaws are flaws attributed to people, not theists, not atheists.
Yes. We are blinded to our own opinions. But the truth to the matter is, there is only one truth. The real truth. And I think atheists are onto the right path to truth, regardless of all the bashings back and forth.
This doesn't have to be about philosophy and religion, you know. My general atheism isn't going to come into my video, but there have been side issues that I've changed my ideas in. And some of it will probably be about completely different topics.
BREAKING NEWS!!! I got pulled over by the COPS, handcuffed & put in the back of the car. All the while, my kids & me were calling on the name of YAHWEH, and the angels and archangels to protect me and deliver me from the hands of the enemy. 5 minutes later they let me go, no ticket no nothing! Their attitudes were COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!!! Can't nobody tell me nothing! YAH REIGN!!
Interesting video. I could come up with an idea for a video, but it would be highly controversial because it's kinda based on my own judgment, pov and such.
Sometimes, I find my self on the road of thought looking at things from an outsider's perspective, and finding that the obstacles of irrationality and bias were underestimated and sometimes unseen.
An excellent video ! I've always felt that I haven't watched you enough.
I've come to similar conclusions myself, regarding the proposition that human judgement is flawed to the point where we accept the notion that others are so easily irrational, but reject the other notion that we ourselves may be without rationality on a similar level.)
Clutch, I see what you are saying but do you embrace our irrationality or do you view it as a curse?
I am aware that we are mostly irrational creatures and I not only accept that but embrace it. While irrationality can lead to blindness it ultimately part of the human condition so why hate yourself for it? I believe life is beautiful for such thing and that the lines are blurred; a combination of the two is what makes life?
Imagine a purely rational world... Why be even conscious for that?
I would like people to be more aware of irrationalities so that when undesired, in circumstances such as trying to discern truth, we can minimise their effects.
I'm planning to make the last video in the series about saving irrationality, because I do believe banishing it would be bad for all of us.
Irrationality isn't inherently good or bad, but it helps to be aware of these things to decide what is good and what is bad.
"Freethinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without prejudice and without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, privileges, or beliefs. This state of mind is not common, but it is essential for right thinking;
good position, use reason as best as you can, and still remember you might be wrong.
Trouble is "truth" is so fickle and subject to bias that even when you find you were wrong, you're never totally certain you are now right. You merely are aware that your reasons for previous belief were fallacious.
Also a line from Joanthan Haidt: best way to seek truth is not to be for or against.
Meh, no time for video making this week but if I remember maybe next.
I'm not sure whether I'm going to make a video response for this, but this video gets me thinking there have been some situations when I have had to trust my judgment while my emotions would have made me make a wrong decision. Do the falsehoods have to be about religions and faith specifically or can it be about anything that a person has been wrong about in the past?
:) I don't have a webcam, so you'll have to do with text...
I have used most of my life telling people that the horizon is approx. 100 km. away, when you stand on an even terrain. I "known" this since I was 10 when my dad told me it as we were sailing between two islands. At the age of 30, I finally used half a minute on wiki on the subject, only to find out how wrong I was...
It's only around 5 km away...
Man, I have decieved so may people with this "known fact"...
I'm not going to make a full video for this, but in answer to your challenge: I used to be a very devote catholic... when I was 16. It took me two years of catholic education to turn away from the church and re-evaluate my position.
Also, I feel that I cannot, at this time, choose weather abortion is right or wrong. I've had a very close friend go through an abortion, and I know that my emotions play into my reasoning so much so that I cannot trust my own judgment.
