Saying it "isn't" Final Fantasy anymore is really relative as one cannot just simply define what Final Fantasy is. Your expectations define what it is for you.
And FF should not be restricted to only the old fans, which so many people seem to think. That perspective just makes FF fans seem snobby.
subscribed because you tell the truth that new ff fans will never be able to understand. the nerve square enix has to sell an unfinished game, with the worst ending in final fantasys history, with the only option left to buy for dlc`s that ONLY covers up backstories and items, NO enidng! NO sequel either! just buy, buy, buy, profit, profit, profit for square enix. and you still wont get to see a different ending.
the game ended as if FF7 ended with cd1 alone, just about a million tims worse!!
@Fly2theSora Not to add fuel to the fire but my theory that the game is unfinished is that they had a too strong of a request (or demand) to fit the game in one Xbox disc, ergo they ran out of space. Think about it. The story lasted only 20 hours, there are less enemy varieties, less hunting missions and more missions about collecting stuff. If they had kept using a multi-disc system we PROBABLY wouldn't have all these DLC. Again, just a theory.

If it doesn't have a good minigame then it will never be a top tier Final Fantasy game. 7- Chocobo Racing/Fort Condor/Arcade,8-Triple Triad, 9-Tetra Master, 10-Blitz Ball.
6 is the only one that didn't need a minigame to make it to the top tier list, with its very impressive storyline, characters, and depth.
This game ruined the only redeemable quality from the first game and that is the combat system. QTE's feel completely out of place. I turned the game off the first time I seen a bright yellow button prompt on my screen.
@masonexcell Stop being overdramatic. The game literally has only 6 battles that uses quick-time events. One for titan boss, plus the initial Lightning one.
@crazyjose111 Well you don't have to do them, do you? :D Frankly they don't do THAT much extra damage and you only need them if you're desperate to catch a monster. I've never used them besides farming Tonberries.
People are so damn greedy sometimes. Its always "GIMME THIS GIMME THAT GIMME GIMME GIMME!" Versus will come out people so untie your ballsacks and calm down. Be glad its even made. And abot FFXIII-2, I have the game myself and it satisfies me to a point. Its not the best damn game in the universe, but its good enough. It's important to let new people step in and have a go. To many people, the franchise has been going downhill, but they always seem to forget that there is always the possibility of uphill. I have faith in SE, especially since they've already proven that they can listen to feedback from fans.
@kayzaac There is always a possibility for uphill. Right now is not that moment. Square's only standing leg is Tetsuya Nomura, and this guy is being spread thin to do a good chunk of their games' artwork (and directing). A good number of the final fantasy Tactics dev team left, the almighty Xenogears dev team abandoned Square for Namco, Hironobu Sakaguchi left and grabbed a few key members with him to form his own Mistwalker, and Yoichi Wada is a very~~~~ bad president.
@kayzaac I do want a good FF game, but with Japan's current trend in games, its very hard to say. The latest, great Japanese game I played was Vanquish and Dark Soul and these guys are a rarity (excluded fighting games since Japan is currently still the best fighter maker). Unfortunately, I only have faith in quality people.
@genorem It's not really 'no quality'. If you think about it carefully, the quality of each consecutive FF diminishes to an individual, simply because the individual is already used to the series. Series are like people; they always age and die slowly to the individuals that spend an extended amount of time with them. Think about when we started playing FF, and think about how old we are now. That's a factor that people always overlook.
Plus, IMO, the games are still creative in their own way.

I really wish that reviewers would emphasize the WHY of what they feel. WHY was the ending disappointing? I personally loved it and it made sense. WHY did certain parts not feel cohesive than others? Criticism isn't constructive if a company doesn't understand WHY you feel the way you do. If it was simply a personal taste thing...take care to say that so your weaker minded audience members don't just go with whatever you said. If it's a real criticism, explain so improvements can be made.
I'm so sick of people complaining. You complain that they had too many CGI clips, the graphics were too good, o_O it was too linear. Square "fixed" all of that and gave you what YOU wanted. I loved XIII and so did Square. They made this game the way it is for you guys. Then they give you what you want and you complain the graphics are worse, there aren't many CGI scenes and the linearity of XIII made it good. You wanted it, so SHUT UP.

But now that we're experienced with FF, our expectations are over the moon, yet we expect each new game to impress us more than the last.

@GenerationBright Yeah, there's too much hate for the game here. SE basically targeted the old-school complainers with FFXIII-2, making it better for them. Yet they refuse to play it, and call it crap regardless. Funny thing is, we really do take games way too seriously nowadays. The majority who are complaining are probably adults who just can't adapt to change. And moderate change at that.
You can't change the shitty first game that lead into this, this has absolutely nothing to do with old school anything. There was nothing innovative about XIII to adapt to kid... unless you mean relentlessly auto battling down a corridor listening to fan fiction level writing for 40 hours.

@2andFoh FFXIII is turn-based, just faster. Anyway, it's understandable for the older players to want the simpler turn-based system. But of course, everything in the world is changing, FF is no different. And I have faith that SE will eventually make a game that satisfies everyone, old and new. FFX was my favourite of the series. It stole my life. Boss battles consumed me. I cared about the characters. I loved the music. FFX is in my top 10 games of time.
People that like this game over any other FF are mostly newcomers to the series and are easily awed by fruity colors and flashing lights, they are the same people that hold the 'Twilight' movies as some of the greatest movies of all time.
i liked all the FF (except 11 cause i did not play it) up until 12 i liked 12 even though in 12 ur main character was one of the least "evolved/involved" character.
I just beat FFXIII-2 and after beting this and finishing every other ff..This one is probally in my toop 3 ff...I dont get why people dislike it, its soo awesome
I prefer your discussion based reviews over IGN and Gamespots Dictated reviews that seem like there just pontificating with nothing else better to do (i.e El Shadia IGN). Its a shame the internet doesn't show 1UP enough love, they do a great job and IGN literally copied their ideas and used them for their sites. Keep the reviews coming.

Haters gonna hate, but I hate VII, and love XIII. The linearity of XIII was intentional to tell a story without players getting lost in a slue of side-quests. Seven just really didn't appeal to me, even playing it lately hasn't grabbed me the way XII did.
@MetAzura the makers of ffxiii explained that they did not have the capacity to create towns/cities/etc... so they made a tunnel game, yet Assassin's Creed's map was the size of a small country when it was released before FFXXIII. They're lying out of their ass because they had no real direction with the series anymore since Hironobu Sakaguchi and many other leads in Square left.
Still want to the score though even though is Brainless to know...Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy....No matter how bad the story lines get...Oh and the series died after 12...FfX Was okay 12 was waay more awesome

The Final Fantasy 13 series is crap meanwhile I bet almost more than HALF the people commenting love Modern Warfare 3 and approve of it way more than Final Fantasy 13-2, when Inifinity Ward only added more crap to the original crap, Modern Warfare 2, and adding more crap to a game that is already crap doesn't make it better. It just makes it better crap. At least Final Fantasy 13-2 introduces new things to the player: a new adventure and a new way to play and strategize during battles.

This series is dead to me, FF13 is the most boring game I've played in recent memory. They can't write a story to save their lives, there is no exposition, the characters are terrible 1 dimensional anime character visual kei freaks, Battles are hollow slugfests, the leveling system was pointless. The entire game was an uninvolved gauntlet of pointless trudge through millions of dollars worth of design and artwork assets. The Japanese user reviews are pretty scathing for FF13-2 aswell.

@saiyomaru haha keep on waiting for that. I have FF Chronicles. Chrono Trigger and FF IV were sooo damn good!! Both had solid story lines. Cecil from FF and Magus from Chrono Trigger are my favorites from either game. I really wish square enix would go back to fun, deep and interesting.....
The combat system is a lil funky, I like it but than again I hate being bound to just one character that was my biggest thing with FF 13, I would run around with Lightning, and then fight a monster that was weak against fire and I couldn't change to summon Brynhilder or a character that would have been better suited. It would be nice to have an open world again so you can really explore, everything after FF9 just feels smaller.

FF13 was an absolute abomination. No one who has played the original greats (4-9) could ever consider ff12 and 13, remotely good games. @GenerationBright Yeah, there's too much hate for the game here. SE basically targeted the old-school complainers with FFXIII-2, making it better for them. Yet they refuse to play it, and call it crap regardless. Funny thing is, we really do take games way too seriously nowadays. The majority who are complaining are probably adults who just can't adapt to change. And moderate change at that.

@2andFoh FFXIII is turn-based, just faster. Anyway, it's understandable for the older players to want the simpler turn-based system. But of course, everything in the world is changing, FF is no different. And I have faith that SE will eventually make a game that satisfies everyone, old and new. Haters gonna hate, but I hate VII, and love XIII. The linearity of XIII was intentional to tell a story without players getting lost in a slue of side-quests. Seven just really didn't appeal to me, even playing it lately hasn't grabbed me the way XII did.

The Final Fantasy 13 series is crap meanwhile I bet almost more than HALF the people commenting love Modern Warfare 3 and approve of it way more than Final Fantasy 13-2, when Inifinity Ward only added more crap to the original crap, Modern Warfare 2, and adding more crap to a game that is already crap doesn't make it better. It just makes it better crap. At least Final Fantasy 13-2 introduces new things to the player: a new adventure and a new way to play and strategize during battles.

This series is dead to me, FF13 is the most boring game I've played in recent memory. They can't write a story to save their lives, there is no exposition, the characters are terrible 1 dimensional anime character visual kei freaks, Battles are hollow slugfests, the leveling system was pointless. The entire game was an uninvolved gauntlet of pointless trudge through millions of dollars worth of design and artwork assets. The Japanese user reviews are pretty scathing for FF13-2 aswell.

The combat system is a lil funky, I like it but than again I hate being bound to just one character that was my biggest thing with FF 13, I would run around with Lightning, and then fight a monster that was weak against fire and I couldn't change to summon Brynhilder or a character that would have been better suited. It would be nice to have an open world again so you can really explore, everything after FF9 just feels smaller.

FF13 was an absolute abomination. No one who has played the original greats (4-9) could ever consider ff12 and 13, remotely good games. They are interactive movies, with none of the original game play and content that made the series so great. Right now the gaming industry has killed gameplay to focus on marketing and graphics.
